Why does Janna's shield give AD?

I just want a firm, logical explanation why this is needed in her kit? Otherwise i feel like its just a random tacked on stat.

Because magic.

Let's be honest, almost every single ability can be claimed as "tacked on" and is there for teh sake of being there, but that doesn't mean it has no purpose.

A real answer would be that it provides Janna or an ally better trading potential, for Janna by providing her a means of physical damage for trading over simply magical from her abilities, while simultaneously providing more AD for the ADC, temporarily boosting ratios. It's something akin to an AA buff from any other support like Nami, or on-hit debuff like Leona, but applied in a different manner.

Every basic shield has a second part to it. Karma shield give movement speed, Urgot shield gives his attacks a slow, Morgana shield give spell effect immunity, Lulu shield gives her passive to the shield recipient.

The true question is why the fuck it scales with AP

Why not? Tons of abilities do more than one thing. Is there some specific reason to not let anyone have this type of bonus?

It's a random tacked on stat

If it was just a single target x duration shield then it would be outclassed by every other ability of that caliber: Lulu's, Sion's, Orianna's, etc etc (except Shen's. RIP). So they made it boost AD.
