What is the reason for having the relic shield execute melee only?

have fun playing bot lane when a nami or soraka can execute heal their adc from range and build the item into a free shield that can mitigate damage WHILE healing them.

It isn't. Ranged attacks can execute minions too, the window of opportunity is just vastly smaller.

it dont proc the execute passive .. it will still heal and give gold... but as a ranged support/ champ you have to last hit the cs while having the passive ready

cuz when it was introduced it didnt have that unique passive of melee only and bot lane was crazy cuz it was so OP as it would go mage ranged and adc bot and both get it and just snowball the gold lead where you were forced as the other lane to start it or lose lane by the gold advantage it applied and the healing /sustain as well

then they try to reintroduce it with the mord bot lane rework.

When it was originally released, it allows both ranged and melee autoattacks to execute minions for a single patch.

In that patch, junglers ceased to exist and everyone ran duo-top. In each game, there would be four champions who purchased Relic Shield.

The cooldown per charge was also 30 seconds on Relic Shield, and it gave gold equal to the minion gold +5, it had +6 hp regen (although only gave 50 max hp), AND the heal was 2% of your max hp (it only healed the person who got the gold from the minion kill, not the person executing the minion).

So it wasn't just because of the ranged execute.

Idk but I recently played Janna and built it to try it out. Farming with it was extremely difficult but I ended up sharing 900 gold with it and the shield was way more useful than the other two actives. Would build every game most likely if it could execute on ranged champs.

If I had to guess though I would say its because it would make sustain lanes even more obnoxious to deal with. Soraka with it would be kinda ridiculous.

because a range champ cant proc the execute of it... you just have to last hit the cs and if you have a stack you can proc the heal and gold share of it...

and as janna if you shield your self and then last hit you can last hit easier increasing your ad (hence why ad janna works) but you are wasting your shield to farm

Yeah I would E myself whenever there were no enemies around and I would W AA often. It was fairly difficult and blew more mana than I would have liked. But they had a Nocturne so the shield proved really helpful lategame.
