Support Role Needs Forgiveness

I love supporting. And I'd do it constantly if it were reasonable. But it's not. And I've begrudgingly come to the point where I just queue Bot/Jungle because if someone on your team isn't pulling their weight, you're expected to compensate.

And I want to be clear - **I'm comfortable playing at a level that is required for carrying someone. **

But as a support, the conditions have to be right for that to happen. I haven't looked at it hard, but I need to get to my third item - meaning a full build of the GI item, boots above item 1001 , and a third, appropriate item. The problem here is that the bot lane is uniquely situated to feel the pain of a troll/afk/player needing to be carried. If one of the bot players feeds, or is MIA then the enemy snowballs. If the ADC is first pick and gets countered, you're relying on the jungle/support to get turn the tide. But if they don't, you're in the lurch, and as a support, you lack the necessary path to turn the game.

I'm asking for people queued for Support to receive a 25% decrease in LP loss. And if that seems too absurd, than enact it when LeaveBuster tags someone. The current punishment system is too slow and too lumbering to detect the sort of sophisticated trolls actually causing problems in the game. Until we can increase the turn-around time, or detection rate of these people, we should stop punishing the one role that is effected most, with the least ability to change things.

I'm playing the same game as everyone else and don't need handouts. If I don't like how Supports don't "carry", then I just won't play Support.

If you get less LP loss for losing, why wouldn't you get less for winning also? If you think you aren't contributing and the team is picking up your slack then you should be winning less too.

Everything's so simple, isn't it?

To answer your question at large, it's because there are complex systems at play, and I'm attempting (with this suggestion) to correct for imbalances as they occur. You didn't address any of the plan, you just called it a handout which is funny because you're not getting anything.

I can cook up simple answers if I ignore the complexities, too. I just choose to try and help people instead of saying "it's not my problem."

Your definition of "nothing" and mine seem to be completely different.

Well my undergraduate was in English, so you decide which definition suits the situation best. Think of this in the same way as a Negative Liberty. Maybe the problem is your definition of "handout"

I mean, I'm trying to keep it as vague as possible. But i feel like his commentary was a political dogwhistle in the first place.

That's why we're seeing nobody play support in Gold and below, and when the fills get the support position they don't act like supports.

Well it's not the only reason, but I feel like that's one of the bigger ones. I don't think changing LP for the role will do. It's a band aid, and Riot is fond of those when it comes to the support role.

Riot needs to set time aside and really look at the support role in a meaningful way. I'm pretty sure they don't even know what they want supports to be in this game anymore. It's time for an update.

Less LP loss for a position on a team that has almost no carry potential as an individual?

That sounds like it'd be healthy for the game and promote people who actually know how to play that role going back and actually playing it rather than refusing to play it because goddamn is it hard being a support nowadays and not burning out.

And it's a minor reduction. I feel like this is no different than a subsidy for a city looking to increase business in a particular sector. It's not a hand-out, as was mentioned above. It's an incentive to gin up more interest in a particular role.

wow then there would be no way of getting to challenger unless you play mostly support role. not possible, it would create a complete mess.

Magnum Mack2 votes

It's not an lp increase for playing support. It's an lp loss reduction.

In other words, you can't climb any faster than the yasuo who carried 23/1/4, but you won't lose as much as the vayne hypercarry losing a 23 minute game at 3/11/2. Supports have the single hardest time getting up in standings because of their lack of carry potential and reliance on everyone else. This won't make challenger nothing but support mains, it'll just give incentive to play the safe role. There will still be plenty of piss-poor supports who get nowhere. If anything, more people playing support might just mean we get people who understand how difficult a role it is and how to synergize with their supports to be better as an adc or jungler.

But yes, let's say something with no relevant argument behind it other than "I don't want anyone to have an easier time than me even though those people playing in that role already have it harder than me anyways."

This only reinforces the mentality that carrying is the only thing that is valued in Rank. I understand that a Support has limitations on how they can impact the game and usually don't throw games (unless they die 5+ times in a thirty minute game or twice before the ten minute mark). But if match making can be trusted, the players you support are as good as the players you're against. The Support does make a difference, even if they can't outright "win" the game.

The thing I'd make the biggest argument with here isn't who can carry, as a tank support with TP and Portal, I've carried some games on tower kills alone, but if the entire meta enforces Supports don't CS. And Riot backs this up by creating GI items to give supports some income, then you have to admit that they already operate with a compromised revenue stream.

If they're stunted in their ability to make money, then we should stem the time of loss they incur since they're hyper dependent (until late game) on other players. Don't get me wrong, when I'm getting my ADC fed and the top lane is feeding, I feel like we can still win, but if the jungle is negligent (and the enemy jungler isn't) or the ADC is trying out new things, the support suffers more acutely.

I think the key phrase here is, 'if the match making can be trusted'. I think its all screwed up currently due to a combination of tons of things. I go into detail in this post. I'm trying to get some traction on it.

Fixing the Ranked Ladder System

Yea, I had to throw that in there because there's also this "statistical fact" that the chances of having an AFK on your team is less than the enemy team. I can safely say after 800 games that this is either not true or I wronged some gypsy in a former life and was cursed.

I think we need to look at the essence of this idea. The same reason this person is frustrated is the same reason that other people do not play support. There is a good reason the role exists, its just far less evident in low elo where there are no good adcs- well, they are very uncommon at least.

I don't agree with the solution suggested at all, but I do agree that something should be done. Not only about support, but all players in general. Many of us lose games all the time having played very well, wondering how is x player in this division with me.

I think this is a very real problem- if we have rampant variance in skillset all over the place in league, it means the ranking system is broken. Especially when people can specifically pick their roles now.

If you knew your adc was going to be appropriately skilled for the division you are in- support wouldn't be so bad. Right?

I go into detail about how I think it can be fixed, as well as a variety of other issues that I think are screwing over the ranked system, in this post: Fixing the ranked ladder system

Can I ask why you don't agree with the proposal?

Unrelated: I like how everyone who disagreed with Deep Terror Nami got downvoted...so coincidental.

KazaJhodo1 votes

Sure thing. I disagree just because I feel as though the actual issue here isn't the support role or how it effects the game- but that games themselves are not well matched. For instance if your adc was good, if other players on your team didn't just feed like crazy- if the game was more evenly matched... the problem goes away, right?

For instance if you're in silver 5 and someone doesn't understand how to play from behind; or not to get caught by the enemy team alone out in their jungle late game. They don't belong in silver 5, they should know better by now. I would argue that they should be demoted, but probably have not been because you have to lose like 10 games in a row to get kicked out of silver 5. Essentially you have to be really really unlucky, because no matter how much you suck, chances are you'll get carried through a game, or play against someone even worse than you and do well in a game, before you lose 10 in a row. So you end up with a shitpile of horrible players in your tier 5s that should actually be much much further down the ladder.

Thats just one reason.

I list a variety of reasons in my Ranked Ladder post that I linked to in previous comments.

Obviously if you have a troll or an afk, that sucks and it just is what it is- perhaps that can be adjusted in other ways, but you don't address a fix for an edge case senario with a global fix. Plus, people would just go 'support' and play whatever they want, I feel like it would encourage trolling. Although it would fix the issue of having a shortage of people playing the 'support' role, lol.

Currently I feel like winning a game is in a large way a luck game. If I didn't, I wouldn't be upset when I lost a game as support. After all I choose to play and I understand/enjoy the role. The only reason I complain is because the only reason I feel like its a luck game is because I feel as though I'm paired with players that simply do not belong where they are.

Thats why as you climb the ladder it feels like it gets easier. When you're in 1-3 tiers, you get better players, because the bad players actually do goto the bottom of the tier, to the 5. Then they stay there for all eternity, lol.

Thats why I propose getting rid of those buffers, and a modifier to the lp you get in a game in my post. By the solution I suggest you could actually lose a game, but play so well that you gain a little lp. This is how it should be and this would add much more stability and accuracy to the ladder system.

Just like you can't just champion balance solely on win rate, you can't judge players on this either. Your fate should not be completely tied to your team in solo q. Primarily, yes, if the ranked ladder was actually working, yes, though I strongly feel as though currently it is not at all.

Even beyond that, the game is not as fun when your fate is tied to bad players. Just solely from a game experience standpoint my suggestions would be better.

I think some may say that mmr effects how quickly you get removed from the division 5 as well. Which is true I'm sure, however I would argue that if you're with crappy players that don't belong where they are... such as any time you climb into a new tier 5, the game becomes luck... or at least there is certainly a large luck component to it. Its not cut and dry.

The first time I ever went through promos in league I was placed silver 2. I literally knew nothing at all. Nothing, completely was just lucky. This season, I'm way way way way wayyyyyy better than I was then, I'm placed bronze 5 when I went 7/3 in my promos. So, does the system work or not? I climbed right back to silver 5 hell, but thats not the point. The point is that the system is the problem. Its now more evident than ever since you can chose your top two roles. Better matchmaking equals better games, now that people can choose roles its time to fix it. The bad players are more clear than ever, and there is no excuse like 'I was forced to play adc', or 'you are lucky so and so took jungle', blah blah....

I go into better detail in my post: Fixing the Ranked Ladder System
