Is there any real reason why Turrets/Towers only do AD damage?

I don't know how it took me 6 years of playing LoL to really wonder why turrets/towers only do AD damage and not like a combination/balance of AD and AP damage. Is there any real specific reason why? Wouldn't it make more sense to deal a balance of the two?

Well they used to have 75% armor penetration and amplified damage for every shot after the first, enough that they did effectively more than true damage, it just 'read' as physical.

They lowered it to 30% and ever since then, the game changed from being defended by your turrets, to defending your turrets. Still think its an unwarranted change that Riot shouldve reverted 2 years ago

Okay, why should they? Why would that make more sense?

(Also, they are the turret's basic attacks, so they should do AD damage. kappa)

I mean they're obviously not straight basic attacks since they go through Yasuo Windwall and Braum shield. They are empowered in some fashion, and there are lots of empowered basic attacks that do magic.

That's just his non-interceptable passive doing that.

I think it is better left as only AD dmg cause of banner of command blocks AP dmg, right? It would buff banner of command. Other than that, who knows any other reasons turret would do only AD.

Yes, Banner of Command blocks magic damage.

Banner has changes on PBE. It grants HP and resistances on minion now

It shouldn't be seen as 'turret basic attacks' because that'd imply that turrets also have other offensive abilities which it doesn't, even it's "passives" it gains from "items".

It just puzzles me how in terms of turret diving or tanking, you absolutely need armor, which in that case magic resist is somewhat forgotten about. Like turret tanking with armor would still be vulnerable to magic damage. I dunno, it's a weird balance I guess

Well it seems at a quick glance, that most champs average much higher armor per level than magic resist, so in the case of not building against it at all, youre better off with it being attack damage.

Also it seems implied that armor is the only way to take more tower shots. Hp, and the amount of damage reduction abilities should also be noted. For example, a level 7 Alistar with his ult up and item 3401 is going to eat a fair amount of tower shots with zero bonus armor.

Also in terms of turret diving or tanking, you absolutely need armor(and hp) no matter what. Because simply, youre the tank. If youre playing into a team that requires no armor(or hp) built from your tower diving tank, then youre playing into a poor team comp.

Though it is awkward playing into full ap teams and being dealt so much damage from towers, i dont see an actual argument for them being the most efficient in more than .5% of games. With that said, armor is a must from any champion that should be taking tower shots, as that is also the champion who should be able to soak your ad damage from other sources. Coupled with the fact stated before, that armor is more plentiful than mr on non divers, (the ones who really shouldnt be taking shots)its actually completely intelligent to make towers do pure ad damage.

  • The tanks who are already building armor, naturally survive more tower shots as they should.

  • The squishys who shouldnt be hit, get enough armor per level to take a single shot without it being devastating as they should.

  • Base Armor and MR stay in a spot where they dont have to be changed to support tower damage changes.

Originally, it was because Junglers always took Armor with the old runes while other roles either never tower dived (ADC/supporty Supports) were supposed to be able to towerdive (Tanks/Bruisers), or only took armor in specific matchups where they would NEVER be in range of their opponents tower's vision, much less it's attacks. item 3157 vs Zed That pretty much set it up so that Junglers and tanks were the premier tower diving champions, and other classes only could if their opponent was low enough to burst. It used to be really balanced and skillful. Then riot nerfed turrets, and there was a point in the game were Vayne was a top tier turret diver. zzz

How about it just does true damage because you shouldnt be able to negate turret damage with normal resistances that's just dumb and why turret's are weak af rn (aside from being wet tissue paper in terms of defense)

It's because (and this is a very old meme), "everything is coded as minions".

Ever wonder why the caster minions do physical damage too with their magic books and wands?

Champions back then got armour per level, no MR per level.

If turrets did mixed damage then they’ll be relevant all game long and that means the only way to execute a proper dive is to have a tank who will be building both resistances.

Most champions general build one defensive item which is usually an armour item, so essentially while you would mitigate the physical portion of turret damage you’d still take the same amount of damage from the magic portion hence making them relevant all game unless you’re a tank.

Also mixed damage in general most people don’t like to play against like Corki or Kog’Maw.

Easier to block. All champs get more Armor per level than MR. Simple as that.
