Once you’ve gotten to Plat, you look at Diamond and say, “If I could just learn the macro and matchups, then I could win lane or scale every time and translate my advantage into the midgame or teamfights consistently,” and suddenly the urge to compete stirs again.
Once you hit Diamond, you look at Masters and say, “If only I could reach a consistent level of correct play, then I could punish my opponents’ mistakes and translate those leads into levels, items, and tempo advantages that could snowball into wins.”
Once you hit Masters, you look at Challenger and say, “If only I could put in the hours and stay abreast of the meta, I could reach the top 200 players on the server and reach the ultimate rank!”
Once you hit Challenger, you look at the ladder and say, “I bet I could beat these guys. They’re just comfortable where they are and have been for a while. I’m hungry. I’ll find the new tactics, builds, and figure my opponents out. I could reach Rank 1.”
Once you hit Rank 1, you look at LCS and say, “I could do this. I am the best player in my region. If only I could develop the work ethic, cooperation, willingness to learn, and broad champion pool, then I could compete on stage.”
Once you debut in the LCS, you look at each championship and say, “I could carry my team or find one that deserves my talent. That trophy is mine.”
Once you win your region, MSI, and the World Championship, you become a Legend and are immortalized in a skin for a champion of your choice. Then you say to yourself, “I’m indisputably the best player in the world. I can do this again.”
