Lets talk about Grievous Wounds

Hey, so I've noticed a lot of people upset about the return of Executioner's calling. I am too. But I want to take a minute to discuss why it could be a problem, and how RIOT could prevent that.

First off, we need to figure out the purpose of Executioner's calling:

If it is to prevent lifesteal wars between marksmen - it could simply apply a debuff to the lifesteal stat of the champion hit by your auto. (On hit effects such as Warwick heals would not be affected then because the heal is not based in lifesteal, but instead on a tunable number in an ability.

If it is to counter overbearing sustain champions like Mundo - It shouldn't just hard counter all self healing. This drives many sustain champions such as Warwick completely out of viability. We should not have to sacrifice the viability of every sustain champion just for the sake of stopping a few of them from being OP. That is like using a baseball bat to swat a fly.... You only need a fly-swatter.

Lets look at ways we could change Grievous Wounds to make it more balanced and still accomplish the goal RIOT had in mind when they brought it back!

Also, could a RIOTer please help us out here and tell us what that intended impact of Executioner's Calling is?

Here's my suggestion, instead of reducing healing over the time period, what if it put a cap on the healing in that time period? Like, "On hit, enemy can only self heal for x amount in the next 3 seconds. This effect will not reset the healing cap and allow the limit to climb."

Or, "On hit, enemy healing is slowed, or applies grey health which heals at a slower rate than the original ability."

Just a few ideas.

I really like the second idea of a gray health bar. This would show how effective the item is being, and it would allow counter play like falling back, you will know how much healing you will get from the gray health based on how much of your bar is gray. :) Great idea!

Thank you :)

I imagine it's to do both those things, as well as tone down healing in general.

Ah okay.

Do you have ideas for cool ways to balance this?

seems fine to me, really. I've never seen anyone play with it though. Will make judgment calls after 6.01 comes through.

Fair enough.

While I am an avid Vlad and Warwick fan, I have to disagree with anyone who does not like this item back in the game. It's removal seemed to leave most ad champs at a loss versus many high hp scaling and healing champions, leaving the only solution to be an AP based champ with Morellos, which still has to get them down to 40% to kick in and versus say a mundo with 3000+ hp getting that buggar down between 1200 and 1500 health is crazy hard when Mundo's ult may be used at any time before 40% to prevent the Greivous Wounds proc in the first place, also I believe that with certain supports (such as Soraka) as well as many new champions implementing Area of Effect heals (hello Kindred!) to many targets at once it is becoming difficult for some ad based champions to combat them. Riots answer? The return of Executioners... for better or worse...

I did not say I was opposed to its re-introduction to the game. I just want to discuss how it may affect the game, and how it could be implemented to keep the game balanced. I'm not against balancing against the OP self healers, but I don't think it is fair to make other self healers pay the same steep price in viability.

My main concern with this item is that it is based off of physical damage NOT basic attacks or spells. That being said there are three champions who scare me based off of the items stats "40 AD 40% ARP Grievous Wounds on Phys Damages for 5 seconds." Twitch with hurricane, which he would undoubtedly purchased to mix with this item, would proc GW for a VERY long time, Darius with the same issue with his bleed, and surprisingly, Urgot with his E. These champions deal physical damage over time and will all to varying degrees be terrifying.

Doesn't the twitch passive deal true damage? So each tick of DoT should not proc GW.

That aside, yes, that seems like it would be a big problem with the other champions. I hope RIOT makes it on-hit only.
