So when are they making Mordekaiser a juggernaut?

The Ecdysiast··16 votes·9,650 views

They announced it a three years ago, but we're still waiting. For over two years now he's just been building health-heavy mage items despite the nerfed synergy and scaling with them. He's not a juggernaut by any stretch of the imagination:

The actual juggernauts (those that are actually "juggernauts" by playstyle, not the bruisers or tanks later tacked onto the list arbitrarily) have several defining features:

  • High base damage and/or AoE
  • High Self-Sustain, either %HP or with high scaling
  • Minimal, but present in-kit CC
  • Armor shred and/or synergy with Black Cleaver which is specifically designed around them
  • No mobility, aside from MS from Cleaver and runes

Illaoi Darius Garen Nasus

Mordekaiser Mordekaiser, on the other hand has:

  • Some of the lowest base damage on abilities in the game
  • Sustain tied strictly to his damage items (whereas the form the others' sustain takes allows them the freedom to build defensively with no reduction to their healing)
  • No in-kit CC whatsoever, forcing his weaker power "spike" to be tied to the completion of Rylai's
  • No in-kit MR shred nor any item tailored to him with it, instead having to wait until he's finished two full items for a similar effect

The one thing Mordekaiser matches them in is the lack of mobility, though where they can get an extra 20 from Black Cleaver, there is no similar item for him.

It really seems like Mordekaiser became the catch-all for a bunch of gimmicks they wanted in the game, and they simply haven't bothered to update or revert them:

  • Despite Shyvanna gaining 10% extra damage to dragons to synergize with her updated passive, setting a precedent for such things, he lacks any kind of boost to help him get the temporary ghost.
  • Despite the fact he now has a ZERO percent play rate at bot lane at all levels of play, they haven't removed the needless experience modifier or reverted it to allow him the AoE damage of his W without standing near a minion.
  • Despite the fact the double-doubled third Q damage proved too strong, was removed entirely, and he has no CC to keep opponents in range to auto, his Q still requires you land all 3 instances to match the damage of a single Q from any of the other juggernauts, save for Nasus until mid game.
  • Despite the fact it hasn't been the priority focus since its nerf those years ago, his Q still increases scaling based on rank instead of having a flat scaling at all ranks.

What I'd really like is a full visual and gameplay update for him, scrapping his long-since outdated kit entirely while maintaining the thematic, like Sion or Galio. But that would mean waiting even longer for anything to be done. For now, it'd be great if they would address my four "despite" points above, and give him the strength he needs to be a viable top laner--- where he's meant to be played.

All in due time.

Though we Mordekaiser mains would rather have him be more of a Juggernaut/Battlemage hybrid than a pure Juggernaut. We play this champion because of the mix of fighter and mage like attributes so that should definitely remain in his VGU.

He should fall more in line with the Urgot level juggernauts, where there is a shield and some ranged damage rather than defensive steroids and he trades this for less sustain, and slightly lower damage, but is safer or more reliable when dealing their damage, and unlike Garen, Darius, Volibear, etc he has some form of poke.

not to say morde isnt in an awkward spot, but.

  • High base damage and/or AoE

he has both

  • High Self-Sustain, either %HP or with high scaling

his w and his shield work as sustain mechanics.

  • Minimal, but present in-kit CC

this is true

  • Armor shred and/or synergy with Black Cleaver which is specifically designed around them

also true, but he has hybrid scaling and a lot of magic damage to kindof make up for it.

  • No mobility, aside from MS from Cleaver and runes

technically his w gives him a minor situational movement speed buff, but youre still correct.

when it comes to class mechanics, there is always the exception to the rule. usually its only one or two exceptions and mostly tied to the champions ultimate though.

Garen doesnt have in combat sustain Olaf is exrtemely hard to kite with running ult Urgot has even ranged auto attacks and only can be grouped in with juggs since his kit makes him want to fight in melee. the closer he is to his enemy, the faster he can circle him.

id still say morde is a juggernaut, but his ap scaling makes his itemization vastly different than the rest, and his ability to stack health and defense very limited as a result.

Bull shit, sure he has high base ad, but that doesn't matter when you can't auto attack shit.

Did you read last half of the post? I specified how he almost has the same strengths, but doesn't quite match up.

Mordekaiser base stats suffer a lot form the fact that he is the only AP Juggernaut and his shield/hp cost mechanics that force him into self sustain items as early as possible.

Other than that he fulfillfs the Juggernaut fantasy a lot in the mid/late game.

He needs a huge rework in order not to e either incredibly OP or unplayable.

The Ecdysiast7 votes

Not really. It doesn't take multiple champions to bring him down, as is the stated goal of the original juggernaut rework, and he certainly doesn't excel at dueling thanks to his vulnerability to, and lack of cc and range.

Since he lacks the ability to get and snowball an early lead, by the time he has the items to do his job the enemy's ranged champions already have him completely locked down.

You're simply mistaken if you think he fulfills the juggernaut fantasy.

Stars Shaper1 votes

My diea of a Juggernaut is something you must step away in order not to get pulverized and he falls into it.

As I said, a combination of him needing a rework and being the only AP Juggernaut is what keeps him from looking similar to other ones.

Metallikaiser1 votes

What do you mean? He cant duel some people like Yi and Trynd sure. But as a Darius and Urgot player, I know thats far from a problem tied to just Morde. Meanwhile most other single enemies once Morde has rylies (his first item and comparable to Black Cleaver which honestly feels like exactly as powerful a power spike for Urgot) will absolutely get killed by him or forced to run. This is no different from other juggs who also dont have great cc, and are thus vulnerable to range and cc, I fail to see how in any of these circumstances, Morde is different from other juggs.

I think while you are correct, there is also a basis for stating he suffers from being AP. AP itemization has been a problem for anyone who is not a mage for some time. Diana combats this by being built as an AP assassin (most high elo diana's just rush deathcap), ekko and fizz who are ap assassins just build lichbane and then mage anyway (normally with a protobelt for extra waveclear/burst), and elise just doesn't get played.

There isn't really the items to allow AP champions to be bruisers/divers/juggernauts when compared to AD.

I feel that he would be a slow as fuck champ but have both a Shield and sustain alongside that insane damage he was famous for. In other words, Morde is a champ that other juggs don't want to facetank and forces them to rely on their gimmicks if they don't want to get smacked by Numero Uno, Nightfall.

Does he stack HP items or AP items?

Also, there is no such things as "AP damag" there is magic damage and physical damage. Dr Mundo has a single skill that scales with 10% of his AP, the other ones scale with his HP and/or with AD.

DeusVult3 votes

Morde has high self sustain with W, and he is different because he constantly is getting shielding from his passive instead of heavier self healing.

MR shred on morde would be beyond broken, unless his kit was HEAVILY changed.

Illaoi Garen Nasus have no hard CC, only slows (garen has silence) Darius has a pull. Morde has no CC, not that different from the rest of the juggernaut line-up

His sustain isnt tied to his items, as Morde doesnt build item 3146

Morde falls into the category of juggernaut because he is short ranged, has high damage and lacks mobility/CC. That is the definition of a juggernaut. Not being able to use BC or dealing physical damage, or having self heals

flibitydoo2 votes

Skarner was also lumped into the juggernaut pile despite him not being a juggernaut (at any point in the entire history of league of legends). His primary objective is to use his ult on the enemy adc to make that game winning pick. Or use it on the enemy assassin who jumped into him to save his adc (thus winning the game cause adc not ded). He will build usually an iceborn guantlet (which is a tank item) or trinity force (which is a fighter item) and things that help him engage like Righteous glory or deadman's plate. He's so far away from juggernaut compared to someone like volibear or udyr or mundo or olaf since his most defining feature is that cc, he's not about kill pressure or damage.

I feel like they just pulled him and morde into the juggernaut pool just because they needed examples but they picked like the worst champs to do so.

But the number one thing that makes Morde crippled is that they wanted to maintain is identity as "I have no cc, no mobility and no range, but I do have a shield". Which of course doesn't work. It will never work. No hero in dota before this game and no moba that was made after this had that identity on a character because it's a terrible identity. It's like Poppy's old ult where it's something that should just be removed from the game as an identity because it's never going to be balance-able.

Metallikaiser2 votes

I mean, this just isnt true. If Morde really couldnt be balanced around this identity, then how come he has done fine through out much of his lifespan in the game? Also certainly not the first such designed champion, are you really going to tell me no hero in DOTA is like that, when Doom exists?

flibitydoo1 votes

...he hasn't?

Literally never picked in competitive ever in the history of the game until the juggernaut patch that broke him. Where he became pick or ban 100% at worlds.

Then they had to nerf him,

and he literally never got picked in competitive ever again.

Wow tell me more about how this champion has "done fine" from a balance perspective and hasn't been a balance trainwreck where he comes absolute garbage or godtier based entirely on tweaking his numbers.

and Doom has a 13 second friggin silence (infinite if he has aghs and stays in range). And it's got a good range to it. And it mutes items and passives. And Doom can also devour centaur camps to get an aoe stun. Or devour any other jungle camp to get their cc. Do you even play dota?

Morde hasn't doen fine though, he's always been either heavily gutted into irrelevance or temporarily "fixed" into being broken. He's practically never at an area where he hovers around 50%.

The Ecdysiast1 votes

Your points are true. Skarner was never a juggernaut, not even the first hour of season 6 when he was allowed to be strong.

And yeah, they completely centered Mordekaiser around the weaknesses of a juggernaut, without letting him keep the strengths because they wanted him to be in bot lane despite the fact the juggernaut class is specifically supposed to be beaten by multiple enemies and ranged kiting.

PopcornBunni2 votes

The real calling card of the Juggernaut class is "stickiness" or the ability to keep a target from disengaging. combined with their high raw values, this is to make up for them lacking an approach or cc setup of their own.

DrMundo running targets down with cleavers is very much fitting a juggernaut, as is Olaf despite being classified by riot themselves as a diver.

Singed and Chogath are unique cases that I'd also put broadly as juggernauts. Neither have the engage of a vanguard or disengage of a warden. Cho'gath just has a bit more cc than is typical for the class. Neither are so far removed from the likes of Illaoi or Yorick that I could warrant them being categorized as anything besides juggernauts.

With that in mind, Mordekaiser is the ONLY Juggernaut with no innate stickiness. In the past he's built item 3116 to combo with his ult, but the creep of burst has made the item a largely nonviable purchase, leaving him only usable if a target is dumb enough to stand right next to him whacking each other.

Metallikaiser1 votes

I mostly agree with yours statements. But Rylies especially after the two ap stat buffs in a row is absolutely being bought on Morde again, often as a first item.

The Ecdysiast1 votes

You're right. I did include the stickiness as one of the key features. The other things, such as their high healing and AoE damage, are to compliment their stickiness and defense.

Mord's in a troubled state specifically because he can't stick to the opponent without buying an item that has no CDR.

LilxPaprika1 votes

I think Mordekaiser would benefit if we gave item 1006 type items a minimum value. Or give make his passive stronger/scale with health regen items. Is there a hp regen bonus keystone too maybe?

Darius = Jauggernaut>> has 26.15 hp5 @ lvl 18 while Mordekaiser Mordekaiser has 9.1 hp5 @ lvl 18 (lowest in the game), it's true that he makes up with the passive, but this prevents him from wanting to itemize base regen items. item 3065 item 3194 item 3056 item 3512 item 3083

The Ecdysiast1 votes

He'd benefit most from a melee-only AP Bruiser item with matching stats to Cleaver, but that would be abused by Ekko, Fizz, Kat, and Akali, so it's not an option.

Bob the Toastr1 votes

Honestly too much power his in his E right now. It's cooldown is too low in my opinion. I'd rather they increase the cooldown and then put some more power in his Q, possible even revert it to the x1, x3, x9 version it used to be.

The Ecdysiast1 votes

That wouldn't solve any of the problems aside from his Q being the weakest of all the juggs.

Bob the Toastr1 votes

I realize that, I was just stating one small suggestion. Obviously he needs more work that just what I suggested.

they’ll make morde a juggernaut when they decide weather volibear is a bruiser or a tank.

Volibear is one of the "juggernauts" they added to the subclass later on, despite no changes to his kit. He and Udyr. So you can see exactly why I specified in the OP that I was talking about real juggernauts, not the ones just shoved into that classification later on.

Your defining characteristics of a jugg are very off. They don't all make good use of black cleaver and some don't even build it lmao. It's certainly not designed for them lmaooo. None of them have hard cc, period.

The Ecdysiast1 votes

Not at all. The characteristics are shared by the other four, while Mordekaiser is left out.

And you're objectively incorrect about Black Cleaver. It is balanced completely around them:

"We’re shaking up Cleaver’s build path and stat offerings to better align with the extended fights its intended users thrive in. Swapping Caulfield’s Warhammer for a Kindlegem works out well for champs who need to live long enough to cycle through several rounds of spellcasts, versus champs who want to down their target in one go."

This was the explanation for the increase in health/decrease in AD from patch 7.4.

They all have at least one soft CC, but you're also incorrect on that. Darius's pull is hard CC. Period. Read up before you try to argue.

you have 2 options.

  • rework mordekaiser into an AD champion
  • create items that would be abused by mages for mordekaiser specifically
Metallikaiser1 votes

I would argue that this is where the mythical AP bruiser items are supposed to exist. Diana and Elise where supposed to be diving bruisers yet that claim obviously now looks silly. If you play tanks often, you will notice Malphite has a really weird kit, there is a reason for that, he was supposed to be another AP bruiser, people who are effectively just like AD bruisers who can take a slight beating and deal damage like JarvanIV Jax Renekton yet are magic damage. As it stands while champions were outright designed with this in mind and I think other champions would also benefit from such items existing, Mordekaiser Galio Chogath , they dont, and thus all of these champs are instead either built full AP to be burstier then intended at the expense of the durability that was intended, or they are built full tank and thus have really solid scalings for AP that never gets built on them. You do bring up a good point that such an update would be tricky to balance with mages, but I think it desperately needs to happen, and I think making them melee only or have bonuses if used by melee champs would be the easiest way to balance them. Afterall, the same happened for AD items... item 3748 item 3074 are melee only, item 3053 melee only, item 3071 notable extra bonus if the user is melee, item 3022 the same situation.

i dont disagree with this. there are definitely some items missing from the shop, but i dont know why that is. hopefully it's a good reason. if you remember a while back there used to be quite a few AP items with the ability to benefit divers. one of which was will of ancients. then there are a bunch of items that were reworked because they were being abused by other champions. i wonder if making ohmwrecker an AP item would benefit champs like elise. it'd be pretty powerful if mordekasier brought drake up to mid and used ohmwrecker on the turret i think. oh and that change to abyssal left a huge gap in the ap diver arsenal.

The Ecdysiast1 votes

Which is exactly why I pointed out in the OP that no such item exists for AP juggernaut(s). And unfortunately, thanks to the tendency for mages or AP assassins to abuse such items far more easily than AD assassins and Marksmen can abuse Cleaver, they haven't made one.

Even if it were melee-only, Akali, Katarina, Ekko, and Fizz would wholeheartedly abuse the item, requiring it to be nerfed and putting Mordekaiser right back into the same spot he's already in-- with his performance being entirely dictated by how strong the items he builds are on other champsions besides himself.

Metallikaiser1 votes

I am a Morde main. I agree for a multitude of reasons that he is high priority for a full VGU for a reason. But no, Morde should not be changed before that. He is fundamentally different because he is AP, and if you would rather he be more like the other juggers for no reason other then your arbitrary want for them to be similar at the cost of him being an AP champ then I findamentally disagree with your desires. I also find it Ironic that you put Garen as a great example of a classic jugger, when his hit and run playstyle, heavy single target focus for damage and lack of in combat sustain I would say absolutely makes him less of a juggernaut then Mordekaiser is.

Sure, they are supposed to be light on CC, why exactly is him going to the extreme in lacking any something which just makes him not a juggernaut? And while you can argue that his sustain is completely different because it relies on him having damage stats, Morde w is still fundamentally a good close combat heal that especially rewards him for sticking in close melees and benefits him to be fighting more then one person at once, which to me sounds exactly like what a juggernauts sustain should be like. On the point of him lacking the utility to magic shred, to be completely honest, sure having some shred to benefit allies could be nice, but Morde already does a load of damage, I dont see a need to give him MR shred. But sure I will admit he will be more juggernauti and probably a healthier design if his ratios were toned down slightly to make up for him having some solid MR shred.

As for your 4 main points. Sure something to help him take drags would be a nice buff, but he already solos drag well, and he gets more out of it then Shyv since its a big team advantage, this can be considered a balance issue all things said.

I mean, I suppose I am fundamentally biased because I am still a botlane Mordekaiser player, (though I will say that you cant act like no one plays him there when Malicious Metal and Raid Boss Morde who are our biggest Mordes in the community often play him bot, and when Tastypotatoe, the consistent best Morde in NA is a bot main) but I dont really see him being played bot as a bad thing, they should attempt to continue harnessing the idea, especially when riot already said they intend to help non marksmen be sucessful in bot. And ultimately the nerfed experience passive is a tiny matter, its nice for us who like to play him bot, but how does it bother you as a top morde? The issue of not being able to put it on yourself I understand, its an issue I can agree with, as simple as that. But I never really felt it was that big of a deal, and I though it was both unique and healthy for the power budget to nip some of his strength while on his own.

I mean, if Morde got CC to consistently land his Q's as they stand, he would without doubt in my mind be broken. If they toned down his damage for the added reliability you only hurt Mordekaisers unique identity as being the single most punishing champion if you cant get away, which is fine, I dont know why you would want to take this from him.

Is it really a big deal that it scales off of rank? I mean I dont strongly care one way or the other, you just didnt really make a case for it one way or the other, apart from it seeming like you just want to give Morde buffs he doesnt need.

Lastly, you say this will give him the strength to be played top, where he was meant to be played, why? Why does he need to be a toplaner? League champs were not originally meant with a lane in mind, and since the rework he was very clearly meant to be played in Bot, Riot decides that, not you. Juggers are not tied to top or we wouldnt have Trundle and Shyv in the Jungle. And hey obviously I care about bot Morde even if the play rate isnt spectacular because I know at higher tiers of play it is better, and ultimately it feels fun to play him in the unique role that gives Morde a better sense of identity. But hell I wouldnt even argue bot should be his main role. Plenty of people play him mid, and mid feels great. In mid, he is in a better position for drag, he serves the role of being a very unique midlaner and especially our first midlane juggernaut, his very selfish playstyle that relies on allied engage, directly benefits from leaving top open to better frontliners, and his magic damage being in midlane makes it easier to have a well balanced magic to physical damage ratio on a team. Now if you are yourself just a big toplane main and want for personal reasons to play him there, then fine. But dont be upset and ask for changes to tie him to the role at the detriment of others, especially when he has so much potential elsewhere.

The Ecdysiast1 votes

Him BEING an AP champ is entirely arbitrary, and it unfairly makes him vulnerable to Rylai's and Liandry's changes-- which are almost entirely dictated by how strong Brand is as a "support".

I used to love Mordekaiser, and I'm sure you did too. But he is not good right now or in this state.

The Ecdysiast1 votes

I made the first reply quickly, but reading your entire comment I'd like to say that you're over-broadening the strengths of the juggernauts to suit your claims. In fact, I specifically pointed out how Mordekaiser almost matches their strengths, but lacks in ways that make a huge difference.

He wouldn't be overpowered with a little CC of his own just as he isn't overpowered once he does get Rylai's.

Though your claims that "plenty of people" play him anywhere are just outright false. You may say a proportion of the Mord players play him wherever or however, but very few people play him in the first place.

He needs the strength to be played top because that is where his subclass isn't completely countered, and that is where the majority of Mord players have been playing him for the last two years, despite the clear intention of the added gimmicks.

I'm asking that he be made into the solo laner fans of the old Mordekaiser remember him as, or better, not this sub-par amalgamation of gimmicks that no one actually likes. The top Mord mains in the community don't even like his kit, and have been complaining about it for years. They simply play him because they like his theme.

Dark Vaatu1 votes

Mordekaiser is fine. he is actually a junggernaut. his shield and heal makes him very high hp. he need VGU update. and little mini rework on his w. Mordekaiser suppose to be big as sion.

The Ecdysiast1 votes

He's not, and the numbers prove it. He hasn't been better than 30th in top lane for years.

BoilTheOil1 votes

I hope he stays ap after he gets a rework

The Ecdysiast1 votes

I hope not, actually. Him being AP hinders his strength entirely, since Spellvamp was removed and he has no synergy with Gunblade due to his immobility, despite his hybrid scaling.

If he were made AD in line with the other juggernauts, then he wouldn't be in this permanent state wherein his strength is tied to how OP Rylai's and Liandry's is on Brand.
