Sometimes you need "toxic" burst assassins and fighters strong to keep the even more cancerous marksmen in check.

It is bad enough that marksmen are mandatory but they are not proplerly being kept in check as of late.

I'll explain the melee champions for you. So you have a guy who likes say.... item 3153 and item 3078 . All right, you build a couple of damage items. Uh oh, laning phase ends so it's time to build tank so you don't die in team fights. Oh, look at that your power curve peaked. You better have GODLY cc or HP scaling if you want to continue becoming stronger. And that's it. Every champion has SCALINGS built into their kit. If you have a melee champion with AD scalings then the instant you stop building AD and attack speed their damage output stagnates. It doesn't mean you get weaker, but a lot of other champions will be continuing to get stronger while you have to start building tank so you can dive and initiate.

There are several non marksman ranged champs who get BEASTLY in late game. Primarily, these are mages with high AP ratios, lots of AOE damage, and utility. Thanks to their ratios their damage just keeps going up, while the massive aoe and utility makes them great team fighters. In fact, these champions usually do MUCH better in late game than any other point.

That's pretty much how it is sadly.
