All the threads about Assassins and ADC's being OP...

Stephenizgod··4 votes·1,491 views

I feel like there are so many threads about Assassins (pretty much Zed from what i can tell) and ADC's (mainly the mobile ones) being too strong right now, mostly due to Itemization or free/easy damage in their kits. There is also talk of certain champions being too powerful, stronger then both of these roles (cough Warwick cough).

Im not going to go into why everyone feels this way, because for the most part they are right. Assassins assassinate EVERYBODY and ADC's can just point click towards enemy nexus, killing every minion, champion, and turret in their way in a matter of seconds (unless there is another ADC in that lane). What i am here to talk about is how to fix both problems at once by making their natural enemies relevant again. Tanks.

Now im not saying straight up buff all tanks, there are some that would get way too out of control, and nobody and i mean NOBODY wants to play League of Tanks again. A slight change in itemization is a good start to help Tanks regain their purpose, some individual buffs (and of course compensation nerfs) to certain champions is another good step in the right direction, nerfing armor pen slightly might also help.

Ill just come out and say it, I Am Biased. I don't play Assassins and i dont play ADC's, i mainly play Tanks and Mages. That doesn't mean my point is invalid though, i play Tanks frequently and im tired of building Sunfire, Randuin's, Thornmail, and Warmogs only to still get 4 shot by the ADC. I have all this armor to stop me from being 2 shot, so now not only does the ADC melt me but any Mage i come across will do the same. I dont understand how this is possible, how this is allowed to be possible. Rammus seems to be one of the only tank champs who doesn't have this problem. If i invest that much money into being Tanky, i should be tanky. That makes sense to me...

Tanks not being tanky is why you don't see them doing anything in game, the only ones who do anything are the ones loaded with CC. Should all tanks have a ton of CC? No i dont think so and giving the ones who dont have much CC more damage is the wrong way to go, thats just masking the problem. Its just sad that ADC's and certain Assassins just get to step all over the other roles, whether because their kit allows it or itemization is just heavily in their favor.

Now the downsides.

Top lane is basically an island, separated from the other lanes. No one comes up, the only time the jungler ganks is when the enemy is always over extended or when the laner is a hyper-carry. Making Tanks tankier would only increase this to be honest, who wants to gank what you cant kill lol. League of Tanks isnt much fun so no one wants that. Tanks who build tank and still deal a ton of damage (item 3031 item 3071 Garen anyone?) will be unstoppable as they murder all your squishies. When the ADC can't melt EVERYONE in front of them people will start only using ADC's that can (like Vayne). Mages will be the new ADC, as building Armor is useless against them, they usually come with a ton of CC, and have long range high scaling abilities. There are some other downsides but you get the point.

Now this isnt a QQ post, im just posting what i have experienced and from what others have said that i agree with. If you disagree feel free to tell me why you disagree rather then just insulting me and then downvoting.

EDIT: Btw i dont usually ask this but can you guys upvote if you agree? Id rather it not be downvoted into oblivion, the people who disagree never seem to forget to downvote lol Thanks guys.

The main issue with Tanks is that because of the way Last Whisper and Voidstaff work, they aren't anti-tank items. They're anti-everything items.

So the thing to do? Make them build out of Tome/Longsword and give them BONUS resist penetration. So something like 10 AD/20 AP and 50% bonus resist pen. That would make them pretty terrible against soft targets, but still a solid pick against tankier folks. It would make picking the thing up a choice rather than the best source of damage amplification bar none.

Epilogue of Life2 votes

No, just no. We've just nerfed every single assassin this season, can we leave their items alone.

Stephenizgod2 votes

Wow that is actually a very good point AND solution. If Last Whisper wasnt a regular item on all AD builds then maybe Tanks wouldnt be so underwhelming. Make Voidstaff and LW less desirable unless against certain opponents is a step in the right direction. Mind if i add it to my original post?

Kuroi863 votes

I could see nerfing the AD/AP, but otherwise no. Not to mention this would make every champion anti tank and Yasuo the raid boss killer. Last Whisper/Voidstaff are built to take on tankier champs that build resistances, because AD/AP is more than enough for the squishy targets.

How to counter a Last Whisper/Voidstaff? Health. Bork? Frozen Heart.

I really wanted to click buff Garen, but then he'd be nerf worthy.

Stephenizgod2 votes

So did I lol but if they nerf Garen i will cry. He needs an ult buff (more like QoL) where you know when you ult will actually kill them. Im tired of my math being off by like 50-60 hp, is this League of Math now? must i know exactly what 30% of my opponents health is at all times? Haha i guess im just too casul though.

Anytime I hear someone call a champ OP, I always think to myself "They must chase kills in the jungle."

Well good sir i say with much respect, You are wrong.

The name of the game is "Protect the ADC/Kill the ADC"

Thats not saying they are Overpowered, thats saying they are the only power :).

Besides i actually said Tanks are underpowered, not ADC's and Assassins are OP (for clarification i said they are currently OP only because their nemesis, tanks, are too underwhelming).

I'm just gonna say it. I pressed the "Buff Garen" button.

Ill just come out and say it, I Am Biased. I don't play Assassins and i dont play ADC's, i mainly play Tanks and Mages. That doesn't mean my point is invalid though,

I laughed so fucking hard....."just cuz i'm biased doesn't mean my opinion doesn't matter"...prolly Hitler's view on the jews, plantation owner's view of their slaves, etc etc...if you don't know how frustrating it is to have to burst through Janna shield, Lulu ult, raka heal, item actives, and summoner spells as an assassin, please shut up. Only makes you look retarded.

Stephenizgod3 votes

If you suck so bad to go for the champions that get shielded constantly or go for them when their support is right there then please shut up....

Btw what you just said is based on your biased opinion of assassins. Im sorry you didnt get to instakill an ADC because their support did what they were suppose to do.

Next time you want to insult my opinion, at least have a valid counter argument... Now go away, we dont want your toxic in this thread.

Epilogue of Life2 votes

Lol first of all, my valid counter argument is that your opinion is biased, and therefore IS invalid. Also, have you seen dedicated supports whose sole purpose is to make the assassin miserable? And do you know that sometimes you can't wait for the right moment, because you are the only one who didn't get destroyed by the enemy? Bet you've never played a game where you can delete any one person from the enemy team, but the rest of your team cannot 4v2.

Stephenizgod1 votes

No your counter argument was my opinion was wrong but yours was right. You used the same exact argument i did just with different subjects, albeit more biased then mine... The role of the Support is to Support the ADC (and the other meatshields) if you are going for the ADC it is their job to stop you, how is that more justifiable then me saying tanks are underpowered in the current meta? Thats something they are suppose to do, a tank is not suppose to get melted by the ADC... And yes i have actually played a game where i am the only one capable of doing anything. If the support stops me from killing the ADC then good on them they outplayed me, thats one of the few ways a support can. Its not a big deal at all, thats why your point is invalid.

My point is that an entire role of champions is below/weaker then other roles specifically asassins and ADC's who should not be able to kill them with as much ease as they do. This is a fact, the biased part of my post was that i can only speak from the side of Tanks as that is what i mainly play. I cant counter argue for the ADC's and Assassins, making me biased but my post is still made from facts. Tanks are underpowered, ive seen 1000 posts saying the same thing, and im sure Riot agrees...

Epilogue of Life1 votes

Dude, I didn't really care about what you had to say to begin with. I think this thread lost its value as soon as you admitted that you are biased. You cannot speak from the side of the assassin because you do not feel it whenever they remove your silence or halves the projectile speed of your shadow, and therefore you are not well-suited to discuss this subject. It's like the people cry about Lee being OP while never even trying to understand the practice and effort it takes to be consistently putting out LCS plays. Your post is made from facts that are twisted and interpreted, not pure facts.

Stephenizgod1 votes

lol and thats why you are wrong. You dont understand what i meant by biased clearly so go away and dont comment on a post you didnt care about to begin with. Thats dumber then this conversation.

Epilogue of Life1 votes

For example, a dedicated tank who is not extremely behind does not get 4-shot by ADC. These 300 armor Leona with 4k HP is definitely in a healthy state in terms of balance.

Stephenizgod1 votes

Yea you dont get 4-shot i was exaggerating to make a point, but still ADC's dont need to take long to take down a tank.

That 4k hp 300 armor Leona is only scary because of her high CC not so much she is tanky. She is just tanky enough to get off her stun and ult, if her team follows up and wins the teamfight then her survival isnt important.

Take someone like Garen (he is my fav tank sorry if i keep using him as an example). The only way for him to get to ADC is with his Q, even that isnt enough to catch the more mobile ones (which are the current meta for ADC). Even with Thornmail there is nothing i can except run from this ADC and still probably die.

I guess a counter to this argument is Garen's tank doesnt matter as much as Mao or Leona. The enemy team will just ignore him, maybe stun or root him, meaning his tank is useless since they will finish him off last. This also reinforces my argument that only high CC tanks are viable, so its a tough subject to debate tbh. I just know that when im a tank my role is underwhelming.

Cloud2732 votes

Yes. While we're at it, let's have a tank that ignores true damage. Or a tank that ignores %max HP damage. Or a tank with stealth. Or a tank with a decent gap closer/escape mechanic. I'm tired of tanks being CC bots who are forced to build tanky. We don't even want to build tank, but it's what the meta wants us to build and Riot won't let us have damage, so we're forced into doing this. The assassins get all the cool mechanics and we're just expected to build tanky.

Stephenizgod3 votes

Uuuuuuuuuuuh nah

I want to and like building tanky, i dont like how meaningless it is to build tanky though. The only one who cant kill you is the Support usually.

I get what you're saying, but tanks should still be forced to build defensively. However, I totally agree about ignoring all those free ADC anti tank cards like true damage. Would also be interesting to see a tank that has even half of the mobility of some champions.

Stephenizgod1 votes

The point of a tank is to not be mobile though, that i understand, but Mobility's rule over this game is too strong for the amount of tank you can get. Also True Damage and %hp may be bs anti-tank mechanics, they are much needed. If no one could hurt tanks they would be too overpowered. Im not asking for completely immunity to damage, i just want Tank role to be just as important as Assassin or ADC.

Sooko2 votes

I think tanks need a way to stop enemies from shredding their HP and resistances so easily. We could use some buffs to Warmog's. Example: UNIQUE: Passive: %HP damage dealt to this unit is subtracted in 2% of its maximum HP. Example: Vayne would go to deal 8% max HP true damage, but your item would make her only deal 6%.

And we could also use an item to give you a mini-Ali ult against those shreks in LW and VS users. New item or something. UNIQUE: Passive: Whenever this unit's resistances get lowered/ignored, it gains 2% damage reduction for a short period of time. (stacks up to 5/10 times) (first part of the damage isn't mitigated, but continuous procs of LW or BC will become less efective)

Stephenizgod1 votes

itemization would be the best fix to Tanks, but also the most dangerous. If they make an item that is too good, other roles will pick it up and phase tanks out even more. If they make an item only good for tanks, how good does it make them? when will it be effective? how long will it be effective? is it too effective against this? who will benefit from such items and who will make them too strong?

Items can go very wrong when used in the wrong (or right depending on how you look at it) hands, similar to the Warwick problem they just had to nerf. No one wants a tank with 8k hp 500 armor and MR, because of some stupid synergy between the items and the tanks.

Also Riot doesnt want champions to be made useless by an item, the item shouldnt phase anyone out, only make other champs more relevant. This based on your Vayne example, i know its not phasing her out but im just going on the extreme possibilities, i mean no one expected WW to become SuperGod Tier with just an item.

"Tanks are supposed to be the natural enemies of ADCs."

No... ADCs will always be the most efficient at killing tanks because they don't have the damage to take down the ADC while getting destroyed by their DPS. This DPS makes the slow and lumbering health-boxes that tanks are easy targets and ADCs can target them as long as they want. Assassins are the natural enemy of ADCs because they leave little time to be targeted and they can execute the ADC before taking significant damage. Tanks counter assassins because they cannot be taken out easily with their damage reduction making burst unrewarding.

(Yes, normally, this isn't how it works, but with the lack of exploitable "weak spots/time-frames", assassins never have the upper hand on tanks and must whittle them down)

Stephenizgod1 votes

Tanks are not meant to kill ADC's, but they are meant to take their damage. Tanks are not there for damage, they are there to create chaos in a teamfight, when there is big lumbering mass of health and resistances walking at you, you run. It splits up the squishys and gives your assassins the chance they need to kill them. Right now, the ADC's dont need to run from you, they ignore you and wipe out your team because they know they can out damage you even if they let you hit them.

FantasySniper1 votes

You never have to run because when you are dueling a tank, the tank is not a threat. They are always a threat if you include the presence of other enemy champions, because they are going to be the ones killing you, not the tank.

Making tanks have no counter is not the solution. DPS champions do and must counter tanks because we need a way for tanks to die.

Stop complaining that those who build damage are dealing damage. Understand that you will not be allowed to be practically invincible.

Stephenizgod1 votes

Wish granted tanks are no threat unless they have a massive amount of CC. So i guess you are pretty happy where tanks sit right now.

I didnt say have no counter, i said they should be countered by fighters (which also buff them if they suddenly became effective) and Mages (since building MR doesnt really effect a full build mage if they have Sorc boots and Voidstaff) oh and as always hard CC... so supports mostly. But an ADC should not be able to just chase a tank down and kill him, the tank has no DPS the trade off is to not die to the ADC...

You need to reread what im saying, Those that build damage will do damage, therefore those that build tank should tank damage. Right now in the current meta building tank isnt as effective against those that build damage. For some tanks building tanky is the only way to stay alive more then 5 seconds, they dont have a lot of hard CC, they dont have high DPS, they only have their tankiness. Why is it fair for them to be countered by ADC's, one of, if not, the strongest role of champions, who primarily ONLY build damage? Only building Tank should beat only building damage. If you want to kill that person only building Tank then you need to commit to armor/magic pen at the cost of damage to other champions. This way you leave it to the fighters and bruisers to deal with tanks, while you go for the squishies AS IT SHOULD BE.

This is just bad logic. It already takes the better part of a teamfight to kill off tanks with sustained fire from the highest damage output on the team. If tanks could counter ADCs, there'd be nothing left capable of killing them.

People already do focus squishies... This is a mandatory tactic to succeed, because the less members of their team to fight, the better. Damaging any target is just better than letting them near you unpunished and still with the capability to put you in a bad spot.

Stephenizgod1 votes

It actually doesnt take much to kill a tank, unless they are fed or you are underfed. I wish people would read my full comments rather then just the part they disagree with. ADC's should not be able to destroy tanks BUT fighters should be able to.

This should by the normal interactions of roles. The ADC lays down the damage on whoever they can kill (mostly squishies), the Tank tries to occupy the ADC by tanking their damage, the Assassin goes for ADC (or whoever is out of place), the Fighters go for the Tanks (being the only ones who can kill them) and the Supports give support to all roles. Obviously you arent going to have a perfect team comp like that but this is roughly what i am talking about.

I NEVER said tanks should be immune to all damage completely unkillable no one can touch them, you guys keep saying that and putting words in my mouth.

If tanks could counter ADCs, there'd be nothing left capable of killing them

What about Mages, Fighters, and Assassins? They can also all kill tanks as building armor/mr pen is pretty standard and easy.

Im a little tired of having to keep explaining myself on this matter, just for those who read comments before posting i will say this: TANKS SHOULD JUST BE MORE EFFICIENT AS TANKS, STILL BE KILLABLE BUT NOT AS EASILY AS THEY ARE IN THE CURRENT LEAGUE.

It does. When they have the advantage and pen items, it takes a minimum of 5 seconds of focused fire on a tank that is afk to kill them. If the tank fights back at all, it takes even longer and you'll end up taking damage to your squishy health pool. With more people on the tank, it can take about half the time to kill them, but in that time one will very easily die to the enemy team, leaving the tank with one less damage source they need to tank and they will either make it away or they'll assist in clean-up. This is realistically assessed from my time as both an ADC and support who studies how the battle is orchestrated and even orchestrates it myself.

Fighters should and would never focus a tank. (Not they would be able to kill them anyways) No one should focus a tank. They take too long to kill and their strength is inherent in their capability to take punishment for extended periods of time. Making them even stronger in that aspect has no potential whatsoever and they will never be killed.

I NEVER said tanks should be immune to all damage completely unkillable no one can touch them, you guys keep saying that and putting words in my mouth.

What about Mages, Fighters, and Assassins? They can also all kill tanks as building armor/mr pen is pretty standard and easy.

That's what you're making them with the goal of having them counter ADCs. Everyone else's damage is inferior to the ADC, so if a tank can survive an ADC, they can survive anything.

It's like saying a rock that can withstand an atom bomb has a weakness to blunt objects. It will never work that way.

I have read everything you said, and have considered my posts in detail. They are already hard to kill, and assisting them any more runs the risk of them being invincible.

Stephenizgod2 votes

Man... idk why i keep having to explain this to everyone... Im not asking for the Tanks to receive a bunch of random buffs. Im asking that the dynamic of the game is shifted to make them just as important as an ADC. My personal solution was for Tanks to counter ADC's, this would be done (in my solution) by making it so armor pen wasnt a standard build on ADCs. My solution to Tanks being unkillable is making Armor Pen a good stat to build on Fighters. As well as keeping the fact that Magic Resist doesnt hold up against a full build mage.

Yes my solution doesnt work in the current League, but neither do Tanks, at least not as over all efficient as the other roles. Thats why small buffs to Tanks, Fighters, and Items would need to come over time.

What im getting here is the people who play Tanks agree for the most part and people who play ADC or Assassin think im an idiot. Im not just pulling this stuff out of my butt, this is a real problem. Just because an ADC takes longer then 5 seconds to take down a Tank doesnt mean that is fine. Why should that ADC even be a threat to the Tank in a 1v1 unless they are super fed? They already dominate in almost all aspects of this game, they do the highest damage, they get the highest attack speeds, they build Crit, they build sustain, they build armor pen, they destroy turrets the fastest, they are ranged and have primarily ranged abilities, some are very mobile, some deal true damage and %hp damage, etc. Why can they get all that when Tanks are left with only building tank which loses to Armor Pen anyways. Thats what im questioning.

FantasySniper1 votes

Tanks can have innate resistances, damage reduction, sustain, and CC built into their kits. When they get in range, they prevent you from dealing damage by keeping you locked in place and incapable of reacting in a way other than peeling them off you.

Taking damage is infinitely simpler than giving it out. And it's something you're technically always trying not to do.

Tanks have a simple weakness: If they can't do their job of minimizing damage for their teammates, they're not doing anything. Then they'll have no value whatsoever.

ADCs have a simple weakness: If they can't put out damage on targets that need to be damaged, they're not doing anything. Then they'll have no value whatsoever.

If ADCs don't want armor pen, they already have enough damage to take down whatever they want, i.e it doesn't solve the problem in any way, shape, or form.

They think "you're an idiot" because you assume it's easy to take down a tank. It's not. It's really... really... hard. The average Rammus/Shen/Galio/Mundo/Leona takes forever to kill and you're usually better off just not wasting your time when they appear. You may beat their health down, but they'll more than likely survive and take all of your CDs with them. If they're accompanying a carry, you just plain need to run if you don't have a tank of your own or can effectively get rid of the carry before the fight even starts. Burst never has a chance against them unless they're Zed, Ahri, Brand, Vel'Koz, or Malzahar. (Almost all of whom have true damage or %HP damage)

Stephenizgod1 votes

You missed my point... Those who play tanks regularly agree with me and those who play ADC's regularly disagree with me... Simplified ADC's think Tanks are hard to kill and Tanks think they are too easy to kill. I am speaking for the Tanks and you guys are speaking for ADC's. How i am an idiot for voicing my opinion and you guys aren't is beyond me. You guys clearly just want to argue and i want to have a real discussion on this.

So far no one who has disagreed with me has respected my opinion, or they just straight up insult me. Im not asking for you to agree with me, im not telling you my opinions are facts (even though most people agree Tanks are underpowered unless they come with tons of CC), i just wanted to hear solutions to what i think is a problem or those who disagree with me giving their opinion on the matter (which im not getting, im just getting told im wrong end of story).

What makes your opinion more right then mine? Look at my poll most of the people who have read this agree Tanks need some attention to become more relevant. If you want to go statistically, most people are agreeing with me (even though im only getting downvoted by those who want to argue).

If you want me to understand that you think Tanks are too hard to kill as an ADC, then you need to respect that i disagree first, i didn't bash on ADC's in my post nor did i call those who disagree with me idiots. You have your opinion on the matter and i have mine if you honestly think im wrong and think im an idiot then lets just end this here: Lets both agree to disagree.

vscAloha3 votes

By saying that, you sound like you assume that your opinion is better than theirs. Judging by your previous content, no you don't think that, but by your tone throughout the page, yes, you do show that through your words. I think the disparity here isn't that tanks are too hard or easy to kill, it's that neither feels rewarding either way. This could be addressed somehow, I'm sure, but I have neither the expertise nor the experience to recommend solutions, merely isolate the problem.

The opinion that tanks are too hard for Assassins and Burst to kill seems to stem from the fact that there is no middle ground. Fighters were supposed to be that middle ground, to offer shades of purple in a blue (Tank) and Red (ADC) world. Now, "fighters" as a whole fail on the point that they either have too much damage and too little bulk, or too much bulk and too little damage depending on how you build them i.e. Tank Jarvan and Assassin Jarvan. Both scary for different reasons, but the fact that nobody identifies either as a Bruiser/Fighter really goes a long way towards stating the problem.

There is no middle ground.

and THAT is why neither feels satisfying. There is no scale to determine if something is too tanky, or does too much damage, or isn't/doesn't (respectively), so it would obviously feel bad for both because they have nothing to compare that tankiness too. Fighters were concepted to be that middle ground, the half damage/half bulky that was supposed to be able to both weather the storm and be the lightning that strikes in it. They FAILED, as showcased in my example above. Jarvan either goes tank or assassin, and any bruiser build you see, with only one or two damage items, is more a psuedo-tank anyway, due to the massive defensive stats a bruiser actually needs to be able to fulfill both facets of the "fighter fantasy," if you will.

Stephenizgod1 votes

That wasnt what i was saying, i was just saying if you want to tell me your opinion is better then face the facts, most people are actually agreeing with me. I didn't want to have a "whose opinion is better" argument, but it seems that a lot of people do. I just want people to give their opinions, solution, and observations rather then just insult me.

I agree with your analysis on Fighters, thats why in my solution i wanted them to be the one who beat the Tanks. Give people a reason to fight tanks rather then just ignore them like they do now. Its not a perfect solution by any means, just one thing i came up with.

Fighters are a different problem though, my problem with Tanks is the general usefulness of a tank, i feel, is very underwhelming. The only reason to need a tank is for their CC, if they don't have CC or cant use it then they are completely worthless. When a Tank is behind they generally stay behind and are useless, unless they have tons of CC or late-game DPS. When an ADC is behind they only need to build IE, Shiv, and LW and now they are the hardest hitting person on their team.

I need to make a post on Fighters though (or at least participate in one) because i like the fighter role just as much as the Tank role. My favorite champions are Melee, idk why but they just are (with the exception of Malzahar who is my favorite champion).

vscAloha1 votes

A tank feels underwhelmed because there is no middle ground.

All we should be doing in this thread is analyzing and clarifying the problems that Riot employees get paid to fix.

Our suggestions are mostly just mush, we don't have the experience nor the expertise to recommend anything meaningful they could implement, and just clutter our posts.

If we posted threads based on how Riot posted threads, say, along the lines of "Hey, what do you like about X/Y/Z, why do you think it's a problem if you do, and why not if you don't"

Saying "Hey, this is a problem and I have the solution" isn't a very good way to go about it, because you'll rarely see Reds on those posts because of the clutter from your ideas.

Stephenizgod2 votes

I feel underwhelmed as a tank not because i dont do damage, im not suppose to anyways, but because i dont feel any more tankier then that ADC with bloodthirster and GA.

Im not looking for a Red post, i just wanted to have a discussion on it with the community. Besides ive seen them post replies on threads way more clustered then this one.

vscAloha1 votes

again, because you have no middle ground to compare it to. Everybody either goes full-tank or full dps unless you get the defensive/offensive from an item of the opposite alignment. This is what tanks in LoL are supposed to be, but Figthers are also there to soak up damage in smaller amounts, and that isn't happening right now.
