It allows him to spam Q's to farm and harass easier. His win-rate will ryze (if that's your problem). This Ryze is MUCH more powerful than the old Ryze. It's just a different gameplay.

I think he's actually a good deal weaker. His laning isn't as good because it's much harder for him to poke and harass opponent. He's also a significantly worse teamfighter because it is very hard for him to get damage on the targets he needs to hit. A tank can bodyblock all of the damage from his Q, preventing Ryze from hitting carries in his range. Old Ryze could threaten carries regardless of tank presence. That's a huge thing to lose.

I'd put money on him needing significant buffs. He just hasn't gotten enough to make up for all the things he's lost. The concept is ok, but it's not there numerically.

He's just a different kind of mage now. That'll take time. That's why his win rate is so low. People are playing him like old Ryze. A tank can body block Morgana's snare...so what? It doesn't make her weak.

Morgana also doesn't have to constantly throw her snares out. She's not impacted by it in the same way he is because she plays a different role and uses her skills in different ways. A comparison I like is Cassiopeia, another dps mage. She not only can put out more damage than Ryze, but she also can target her damage. A tank can't bodyblock her from hitting the important target.

The point of this is, he didn't just get good things from this rework. He got some major downsides too. Numbers can address these weaknesses, but he doesn't have the numbers to be balanced right now. When he gets appropriate buffs, it will work out.

He's different, and it's a good design concept, but his numbers are not sufficient yet. We can wait as long as we please, and he still won't be good until he's buffed. He will be good after buffs, but he's not there yet. It's not just because people are playing him wrong. That's a part of it, but a much larger part is just numerical weakness.

Just as a quick note, that's not just my opinion. Meddler was talking about him a couple hours ago and noted that Riot thinks he's weak enough to justify a buff (he said laning is the most likely place he'll be buffed, since his bullying potential went down quite a bit). That may change, but I wouldn't expect it to.

I saw the Meddler comments, but I really do think Ryze is fine. I think any buffs to his laning phase will make him need a nerf shortly after.

I guess we'll see then. I just don't find him at all scary in the laning phase anymore. He used to be a really good bully. Now.... well, I haven't had any trouble free-farming against him, and I never used to be able to easily free-farm as a melee against a Ryze. I mean, he can farm a bit safer there, but he used to able to farm safe because he could threaten to harass anyone who wanted to farm against him.

He needs the buffs because he got a rework. It made his gameplay healthier, but left him kind of weak. Buffs will address that problem.

I've been trying to get good with him but yeah he definately needs a buff. And even if you think he's fine you're wrong, not only is it clear, people put him on tier 4 top and tier 3 mid. Of course he's playable in normals but not if you are serious.

His 1v1 is pretty weak until late game and average then. His team fight presence is also pretty sub par because his Q will never hit priority targets, and to even try to hit priority targets you will have to be in a bad position that will get you instantly killed.

Right now all you can do is focus frontline and peel and there are much better champions for that. He can do some ridiculous aoe damage but only vs people who don't know his kit.
