She was designed to be a melee carry, though. Sorta like Master Yi, or Tryndamere, or Yasuo, or the old Fiora. She was considered weak as a melee carry, though, and was considered weak overall until someone built her as a Triforce bruiser and now that's how she is known. Riot seems to be okay with that.

Irelia was never really considered weak, she has been constantly nerfed which is how the "better nerf Irelia" meme came about. The biggest criticism about her has generally been in regards to her ult and its actual usefulness.

She was, as you mentioned, designed to be a melee carry, but this was 5 years ago and Riot really didn't know how to make a healthy one hence the kit overload that made, and continues to make, her strong (tenacity, slow, stun, heal, true damage, plus a general mix of physical and magic damage).

But the fact that she wasn't designed primarily to be AP in mind matters. If you make what is suppose to be an AP assassin, and they still excel at assassinating while building virtually no AP, then there is something wrong.

Know your facts, bro. Irelia has received more buffs than nerfs. The "Better nerf Irelia" meme is actually undeserved as there are champs with way more nerfs than her. It just got caught on after she received a few nerfs in a row. It became a meme and people kept using it. Funny that people nowadays think she's one of the most nerfed champs.

Irelia's champion tag was originally Assassin.

Irelia wasn't designed with extreme squishiness in mind, Fizz was. The only reason he has his E is because they assumed he'd be defenseless without it - note how Irelia has no equivalent tool.
