Skipping Sight Stone can actually work

On Supports who scale with AP at least, it can be a viable strategy https://i.gyazo.com/cebe4f5759b1d6a120c59eb8fffa16cf.png

played with this dude(d1 sona main master last season) like 10 games in a row now in d1/master/challenger (hello match making), and we won almost all of them without him building sightstone The reason to this is that because 5 control wards+trinket is enough for vision and because to get vision from a long distance you can get item 3462 , then control wards and trinket will provide vision on objectives+playing safe if you don't have vision is something that you do without realising it if you're clever

Then if the support has a high amount of AP, the utility/damage will be as high as your mid laner making you able to oneshot a target without the target to suspect it (like the ahri in the video)

i don't know what you are talking about but not building ss is actually reporteable

Elite4Runner6 votes

Sure, you can report it all you want, but it isn't bannable.

Sightstone is not required, but it is encouraged.

If your team is smart enough to apply enough vision through other means, and to play safely to compensate, sightstone is not even necessary.

The trouble is, finding teammates who are actually that intelligent.

It helps that this was a duo and they are able to communicate the strategy.

the support singed player got banned because he didn't build ss

Escheton2 votes

Nope. Didn't even get banned at all.

Elite4Runner6 votes

Maybe you should do some more research.

First of all, he didn't get banned.

Second, the comment regarding the fact that he did not purchase a sightstone was evidence that he was not willing to work with his teammates who had repeatedly requested that he help to provide vision. This and several other requests from his teammates were blatantly ignored, and instead HIS strategy was forced upon them regardless of request to the contrary.

This is in stark contrast with Dr Sona x Rubick's case, where their teammates were at an understanding that a sightstone was unnecessary.

Wasn't it more that he was playing a different role rather then not getting a sightstone? I think the guy went double jungle or something every time but his role was supposed to be support, forcing his adc to be alone in lane.

Elite4Runner2 votes

Ultimately, the problem that they had with his behavior was just that he was forcing his unconventional strategy on teammates by pretty much saying (paraphrasing) "This is what I'm going to do no matter what you say about it."

What he actually did was technically okay, and could potentially be an honest strategy. It did work quite well some of the time. It was just so out of nowhere that even his own team was unable to know what to expect.

Exactly this 👌

The support singed player didn't get banned for not building ss... he got banned cause he left his adc in a 2v1 situation for part of each game, which is unfair.

on board when everyone talked about him people were saying that he got banned because he didn't build ss and those people got upvoted

People were jumping on the misinformed bandwagon because it painted Riot in a bad light for enforcing the meta.

However, the actual riot response to his ban was what I said, for leaving his teammate to fend for themself while he did his thing. I saw it in a YT vid, but forgot which one sorry!

In low elo people dont buy as many control wards so depending on teammates for vision doesnt usually work. Also, late game there isn't an inventory slot for a control ward and suddenly the opponents are out positioning you every baron/drake fight since they have wards all over it.

Of course the theory here is that you're just nuking people so hard in mid game that they never come back. So instead of trying to pick people off that are running over wards in a bad spot you're just grouping up and trying to force fights? If you lose the first fight even though you have more AP than the enemy support for some reason (mistakes happen) won't that set you behind forever and make it very very hard to comeback since you will lack vision and not know where to farm back into the game?

I feel like I should just try this though. First time Sona ranked no SS here we come baby

that's true, but looking at the history match of this dude sometimes he built sightstone, and it was in mid/late where people had no slot for control wards

Ok so first time Sona in ranked and I've never even really bothered to read her abilities but you absolutely shit out damage in lane and basically kill the enemy duo like 2-3 times no sweat. Towards teamfights I was SO squishy and missed redemption. Baron and drake were a bit nerve wracking as well since no vision on them and we lost a few teamfights having to check on those objectives mid/late.

This is a very very satisfying early game strategy though and if I were to get good with Sona I can def see dumpstering people in lane and trying to win by 25-30 with her no SS as being a fun way to win games. Effective though? I feel more in control of teamfights with someone that has CC on something other than their ultimate and really want to secure more drakes with good vision rather than nuke the shit out of people and hope I get lucky late game.

you need hextech revolver and lich bane

it just felt redundant with a midlaner on the team and it took forever to get items without scoring kills

Also, when I tried to force fights, even with pings, my low elo jg and mid would not dive. This build did not help them defensively when they were in turn dove for being too passive and wasting cooldowns on minions. It felt like there was only one way to be effective and if the team wasnt on board with it you didnt do much. But then again im not a good sona player and didnt counter engage well at all lol.

except below plat, control wards are extremely rare

PEOPLE STARTING TO REALIZE! Sad thing that 95% of the players would still complain about no sighstone rush. What a shame.

Ahristocats2 votes

seeing that this thread is being downvoted i think so, despite a high elo player doing it and winning almost all his games

Oh, its -4 already. Vision is surely important, but nearly not as important as everyone thinks so. The more your team is coordinated, the more vision is important to you. So, in pro play, vision is number one priority. But for soloQ, vision only matters late game, because early game vision actually does nothing. Everything is so mobile this days that seeing enemy jungler coming sometimes not enough to escape from him. It's just better not to overextend at all. Drakes are usually taken after kills, so most of the time you can't contest them, so warding allows you to watch. And only past laning phase wards become important tool of zone control. I used to get Sightstone at like 20-25 minutes past seasons. Maybe these days you need it earlier, but rushing it is still not right choice IMHO.

In higher elo everyone wards, so maybe you can get away with not using a sight stone

fuck the police, skip sightstone, play sona, get lichbane, go double edged sword, get thundergods, go 20 ap runes.[slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

That's not fucking the police. True Edgelords rush Infinity Edge Phantom Dancer on Sona.

DemainaNyx1 votes

Yeah, you can skip sightstone. However, if the enemy team has one, you have less vision than them and thus, they can do more with the knowledge they have. I mean, you could win the game without buying items period, but buying them makes it 100x easier.

or you can duo with a mid laner who builds sightstone lul I used to go sightstone on xerath mid pre 30. Those were the days...
