Is Jayce the worst character in the game?

I have been using Jayce a fair bit since purchasing him. I have played almost every champ in the game, and have a strong versatility in the majority of them; I however find Jayce to be such a niche pick that he is almost useless.

He can't melee worth a damn, and he has pretty bad damage when in range mode. Q is practically useless outside of his E gateway. Using the gateway makes it abundantly clear where his shot is going / coming from, and although the shot looks big, the hitbox is abyssal. Blitz and Thresh's hook have a wider hit box than Q combined with his E, as does Olafs axe.

He is extremely mana dependant, forcing you to buy tear early on, hurting your early game damage even more when other lanes are stacking armor, MR, AP, or AD to compensate, pushing his laning further back in the early game. The fact that you need to line up two abilities to do good damage really drains that mana. It's also a horrible feeling when you miss, considering it has a 16 second cooldown, and together you are looking at a MINIMUM of 105 mana at level 1 for both.

In hammer stance, his attack damage is also quite low. You can't build attack speed on him, as this takes away entirely from his Q/E combo. You have to burst, HOPE you kill them.....and then sit on painstakingly long cooldown times. He is one of the only champs in the game where you are forced to buy Lucidity boots simply for the CDR.

Am I missing something with Jayce? He feels like a really REALLY bad version of Nidalee. With Nid you need to land just 1 skill shot, which does roughly the same damage as Jayce's Q when combined with E. Nid can heal herself, and doesn't have to worry about mana issues when in cat form. She also has a much better escape and burst mechanism.

Am I missing anything else with Jayce? Anyone else think he deserves a bit of an upgrade?

I might be a little bit biased. I wouldn't say he's the most OP champion in the game, but there's definitely something to him if you can get the hang of his kit and how to use the abilities together.

Jayce is really, really dependent on you switching between hammer stance and cannon stance often. Cannon stance eats up your mana like you wouldn't believe, but hammer stance literally has a built-in Essence Reaver that restores mana on auto attack (after you get your W, anyway), but the tradeoff for that is that you have to actually go into melee range to farm and get that mana back.

That said, not every champion who has a rough early game (and Jayce's early game isn't even close to the worst) needs a rework. You just need to play safe and focus a little more on farming, and if you can, get ganks so you can get kills early on and get ahead so you can do insane amounts of damage with five damaging abilities and about a billion combos that will help you chase down and murder the hell out of most enemies.

I like Jayce a lot because he's versatile, so I've played him successfully in every lane -- you just have to build him differently, depending on what your team needs. Jayce can be a tanky AD caster or he can be a squishy high-damage AD carry that you can play as a marksman (who has a short-range execute and mana restoration in melee form). Nidalee isn't quite as versatile, if you ask me -- she's going to be pretty squishy unless you sacrifice a lot of her damage for defense, and if you build her anything other than AP, you're going to be trapped in cougar form most of the time because that's where all your damage is going to be.

Anyone can feel free to disagree with me (I'm definitely not even a Jayce main, but he is my go-to champion when I absolutely have to go top or even mid lane), but that's the way I see it. :)

I completely agree with you and I am a Jayce main. Not high ranked mind you but a Jayce main none the less.

Jayce, the worst champion? You make me laugh good sir. Jayce is a freakin' superhero. http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120702213257/leagueoflegends/images/6/66/Jayce_Teaser.jpg

He isn't even CLOSE to the worst in the game, but he isn't very good. Like you said he is a worse, AD version of Nidalee.

Using the gateway makes it abundantly clear where his shot is going / coming from,

Then you aren't using it right. Cast Q then E while Q is traveling, or cast it from close to the gate.

and although the shot looks big, the hitbox is abyssal.

What is big to you? IT has the approximate AoE of Tibbers

He is one of the only champs in the game where you are forced to buy Lucidity boots simply for the CDR.

No there are a few of those, simply because they are fully offensive and don't make use of attack speed

Each IE is only 20% crit chance. The idea is 6 bf sword items with 100% crit chance

I ran this the one game I played jayce, 3.3k crits, healing 1k per hit, 110%dmg with w up

Jayce isn't in a strong spot, but he's not bad.

That's not how you spell Tristana.

Lol what? He's definitely not a bad champ. He's not the best, but far from being the worst.

Jayce isnt in the best spot right now, simply because its the tank meta.

Once the game goes back to its standard 3 assassins/ 1 support/1 adc meta, he will be strong again.
