PSA Performing well in your Placement Matches....

Does not mean that you will be placed outside of bronze. Your placement is heavily determined by your performance in ALL PREVIOUS RANKED SEASONS. If you never escaped bronze, expect to place in bronze 4 or bronze 5 regardless of performance. For players that did not play ranked last season, expect to be placed in the low silvers(high bronze).

Every complaint you are about to raise has been raised before and changes have not really happened. So I'm making this PSA to preemptively lower your expectations. The reality is that, a new season does not mean a truly fresh start. Nor should it.

Think the highest placement you can get is plat 1?

Everyone is supposed to compress towards 1200, which is around silver 2/3. Nobody should be pushed lower than that. People who start lower are supposed to be pushed up towards silver 2/3. Bronze 5 should never be a starting point, but it is for people who were on the cusp of gold, even, in some cases.

Playing with people around your MMR near the start, thus compression...okay. Lowering everybody's placement ranking by 5+ divisions...that's just stupid and unnecessary. It has nothing to do with MMR and just forces more promotion series, which nobody likes anyway.

yup. Got g5 in preseason and got s5 after placements. If you are good you will climb out just fine.

so even though i was placed in silver 5 back in october, worked my way to silver 4 a few days ago, AND went 6-4 on my placements just now, i would have been placed in bronze 4 reguardless? because im slightly fucking pissed

Not sure about this. I started playing in Season 4. - Got to B4 , then dropped to B5 Season 5 - I won 10/10 , got placed B4 (My mmr was soo bad) , climbed till G2, and P5 in the pre season. Season 6- I got 4/10, got placed G3 .

If it is determined by all previous ranked seasons, shouldn't I be lower considering I only won 40% of my matches?

Your first season was still a factor in your placements, because MMR carries over from season to season, but you effectively dug yourself out of that hole by playing well last season. MMR becomes much more forgiving once you generate 50% or higher winrate.

That makes sense, I used to have 54%.

Pretty much.

Your placement is based on MMR which an invisible number that is based off of WHO you play against. It determines how many LP you get for each win and how much you lose for each loss. Essentially your MMR for last season was equivalent to a S5 or a B1. Also your performance after November basically doesn't count because the season ended. It has an effect, but generally it's your performance in previous seasons that have the biggest impact. Since you only had roughly 2 months of ranked games last year your losses carry more weight than they would if you had 12 months of the same performance. Think of it as taking the averages of your play. The more games you have, the less impactful individual games are.

Additionally the difference in skill between a bronze 1 and a silver 5 is less than you think. The bottom of each bracket tends to be filled with folks that really shouldn't be there. Consider that gold 5 is pretty much silver 2.

Don't know what I will end up with. Last season-my first ranked season- I won 7 and lost 3, got placed in Bronze 1. Fell all the way down to Bronze 5 and steadily worked my way up again. Got to Silver 5 in this pre-season. Now in my placements I've won 2 and lost 6, including the last 5 in a row-every single game I had a troll or feeder. EVERY.DAMN. GAME.

I seriously do not know if I want to finish the last two matches just because I'm worried they will put me in bronze 5.

So what if they do? You've proven that you are capable of climbing and improving. Yes it's frustrating, but until you dig yourself out of this hole you will be stuck in it. If you allow it to get to you you will be tilted and you will play worse. Accept that you have to climb and focus on playing quality matches.

I have. I've calmed down and going at it with a new perspective. It's just gonna suck climbing out of Bronze again.

I won my last 2 games, therefore finishing 4 wins 6 losses. Ended up in Bronze 4. Not as bad but still pretty bad. Well, here goes the grind of getting out of Bronze.

Good luck in your endeavors.

then...why play ranked???? there's no way i'm climbing with the amount of time i put into this game.

ModKnightsKemplar2 votes

Maybe not worth your time then.

The ranked season is for a set time, and it's understood by all who have been here for even one preseason cycle that it will inevitably reset. If you can't climb to your satisfaction during the year, it may not be worth playing, I guess.

It's worth noting that I never placed in bronze and my MMR has never dropped to a bronze level. It may be true that ranked play isn't worth it for you because it requires so much time.

I believe it also is based on which matches you won/lost. if you won against a higher tier/MMR it counts as more than if you had won against very low tier/MMR (think winning against a bunch of gold 2's vs winning against a bunch of bronze 1's) and the inverse is also true...you lose more if you lose against "lower skilled" opponents and lose less if you lose against people with a larger mmr gap.

At least it used to, should still be this way, but not 100% sure on it.

People will forever complain about these. They do this with every season and it will never change, because they expect something "more" from the placements when it's not gonna happen.
