Malphite's compensation for sunfire nerf is a joke.

Sunfire was nerfed hard and that really hurt the champions that heavily relied on it. Because of this, Riot gave a couple tanks some compensation.

Dr. Mundo got a flat 5 extra damage on his W at all ranks as well as a higher AD growth. Sion got a lower cooldown and higher hp ratio on his shield. Malphite got 10% armor ratio on his E.... Here is some math as to why this is so laughably horrible.

First of all, the buffs don't really make up for sunfire being shit now, if anything they free up the champion to rush a different item but that's about it.

Dr. Mundo gets more than 5 dps extra. Sion got a 15% lower cooldown W as well as higher shield strength. Malphite got anywhere from ~1-4 dps if he stacks the shit out of armor. Let's say he rushes sunfire and has 110 AR. This gives him 11 more damage every 7 seconds, which translates to 1.5 extra dps... So when Malphite is meant to have his biggest powerspike, he is doing severely less damage than before the nerfs, when he was already struggling. Even with 40% CDR and hundreds of AR it still doesn't compare to the massive immolate nerf.

Dr. Mundo and Malphite are going to need way more attention still.

tl;dr Malphite gets a fraction of the dps he had before sunfire nerf, and a fraction of the dps Sion and Dr. Mundo were compensated with.

Phreak explained in his review of the patch notes why this buff to Malphite is actually a really good one. Here is the time stamp'd link for ya. https://youtu.be/vSB2T0_MP2g?t=47m20s He calls this buff a +15% damage buff because this armor ratio scales with his base armor (so it goes up as he levels) + the free armor he gets from his kit itself.

The problem is his early game is substantially weaker, and before the nerf he was already getting destroyed by bullies that outscaled him. He didn't need a lategame buff, and even if he has 300 AR it's only 30 extra damage on a 7 second cooldown.

I've done the math. Assuming an extremely ideal and unlikely scenario such as 400 AR and 40% CDR it's going to be similar damage to pre-nerf sunfire. Under normal circumstances and for the majority of the early game he's still getting the least compensation as the champion that needed sunfire most. Sunfire was a pretty heft chunk of his dps.

Malphite Can still be picked into a AD heavy comp and be the reason you win. No one cares about malph doing damage. His sole purpose is to get onto a carry, and shut them down. Let alone solo kill them already

His only hard CC is his ult. While he does have a strong AS slow, he has to deal damage to be relevant. Every bit counts, he was performing poorly and rarely picked even before the sunfire nerf. They have to give him** something**.
