Mobility is getting out of hand

We are at a point where even a single gapcloser with a decent is considered not enough. We have champions with near infite dashes and a god damn AoE projectile block (Yasuo). One with near infite dashes, heal and burst (Rengar) champions with quadra-dash (LeBlanc, Riven who also has a strong scaling shield), one with double dash, knockback, shield, slow, attackspeed debuff and spellvamp (Lee). Champions with dash and knockback (Vayne, Trist), champions with double dash and invincibility (Fiora, she got nerfed though) (Fizz), champions with tripple dash (Ahri, Akali) and absolute hilarious champions like Zed who not only are among the strongest casters and auto attacker, but have an additional out of jail card and can dash back into his original location if he misplays SEVERAL TIMES. While it does not save himself Thresh also is an honorable mention due to insane dash range AND shield he grants to an ally. Furthermore Vi (double Dash + shield) and Diana (Several dashes + shield + pull) are worth mentioning even though they're less popular.

There is aslowly growing champion rooster inside the champion rooste of championsr who are granted the ability to outplay everybody else, but are immune to outplays on their own.

I also like the phrase "just stun them". Most stuns don't last longer than 1.5s and have a long cooldown and at least roots often are skillshits which are hardcountered by mobility. Many of these champions are much too tanky to die within a single stun anyway.

I feel like Riot fails to understand how powerful mobility is, especially when combined with strong burst AND DPS (Zed / Lee again).

Looking at this list you'll see that MANY of these are among the most common picks ingame.

I agree that mobility is getting out of hand. Way too many of the new champions have too much mobility. They are pushing the new meta to the point where mobility is becoming almost mandatory so you don't just die to your opponent's mobility. Some of them, like Fizz, if you have no mobility against, you can't really do anything. The battle is all determined by what sort of play they make. He is immune to stuns until he has used his playful trickster, and then he saves it until when it'll kill you after he's used the rest of his abilities and you can't do anything about it. Or worse, you're the support with only 1 stun and can't do anything while Fizz kills your carry in the same way. I'm not saying Fizz is op, nor is mobility, I'm just saying mobility is becoming too important to keep up with and if you have no mobility then there's too little you can do to try to outplay or anything when they have so much.

Syndra wrecks Fizz. So do Chogath Galio Vladimir. Lots of ways to gut that fish without a dash.

I think this is more about mobility being undercosted, relative to other kinds of utility. It's also worth mentioning that Riot's crusade against targeted CC is a big contributor to the feeling that mobility is everything -- CC is also everything, and mobility now is the best way to not get CC'd.

The hard counter to Syndra (and all other squishy mages not named Lissandra), Fizz, is somehow wrecked by her? Okay, not taking anything you say seriously anymore. I shouldn't have expected more from a support main.

Fizz is no hard counter to Syndra. Syndra dominates the early lane; Fizz can barely touch the minions until first back if Syndra plays correctly. Fizz has more kill potential at 6 but Syndra will have a CS lead at that point and probably get 6 first. Overall, it's a skill matchup post 6. Bjergsen's stream has lots of good content for seeing how to play either side.

I almost want them to rework old, outdated champions instead of making new ones.

They're doing both at the same time with two separate teams already.

No, I mean stop new champs all together for preseason while they focus both teams (100%) on updating champions that have reason to not see much use in S5 such as Taric and Skarner.

Although the new jungle items do give Skarner some sustain in jungle with his shield.

Logistically it doesn't make sense to take both teams, which have already been separated specifically into to sets of functions, and make them both do reworks. If they need more people, they would hire on the rework team. It's not always about just having more people. There are other factors at play when you're talking about the rate at which champions are being reworked. As mentioned, if it was a people thing, they'd just double the teamsize for the ChampUP team.

Your comment doesn't really make sense because Skarner is going to be in a really good place in S5 and was already updated in S4.... So why on earth would he get another update? His kit was already reworked and modernized....

I think Riot realizes how powerful mobility is now. Historically, they undercosted mobility, which is why you see things like Varus doing hardly any more damage than Corki and being a very rare sight in the game. The thing is, I also think Riot realizes that mobility is fun.

They don't really want Gangplank to be good. They like it when the strong champions are the ones that can make plays and be outplayed in response. Kits that can only do one thing, or that aren't able to surprise people with unexpected potential, aren't good for the game.

Mobility is one of the biggest tools for playmaking in the game, so expect to continue to see a lot of it. Most likely, you should also expect old kits to be reworked to fit in the new mobile world.

What about this guy? Velkoz Vel'koz isn't that old yet he has no mobility

Vel'Koz is a pretty healthy champion. Tons outplay potential for him and counterplay available to enemies. They wouldn't mind if he were good.

Vel'Koz's problem is that he doesn't get enough damage or utility for his immobility. Classic example of mobility being undercosted by Riot. If you are immobile, you have to be game changingly good at something else in order to be viable, and Vel'Koz is mostly just another mage.

This all stems from riot devaluing point and click abilities in general because they are 'bad design'. They are needed to keep down mobility because they can't be dodged but trade off shorter range, worse cooldown, worse damage. Therefore, it gives players a chance to punish a hyper mobile thing that dances around all over. So ironically enough it leads to even worse design where mobility is only dealt with by more mobility.

Now riot is at a point where they've pigeonholed themselves into pumping more and more mobility. Even people that normally defend some of these questionable releases (like thresh, yasuo, etc.) are on the bandwagon that this one is too much.

I chose to blame CertainlyT.

He unfortunately doesn't have some one around telling him his ideas are fucking retarded. He just has a reputation(for some reason) of being some creative mastermind that comes out with amazing and perfect kits.

It's a bunch of horse shit, honestly. Any damn body can come up with broken overloaded kits. It's the people that can come up with kits that are fun to play and not frustrating to play against that are the true great champion designers.

Willing to work for minimum wage to carry a wiffle ball bat around Riot's offices bonking him on the head when he wants to make another champion.

How many times will you bonk the person that made Lee?

I wouldn't. I would only be watching him out of the corner of my eye as I follow CertainlyT around. He has a pretty diverse roster.

And now if you check his champions you see that they have either been Olafed because they used to be too strong, are high candidates for reworks, or are what Riot atm considers toxic

Even though a lot of the champions in the OP aren't CertainlyT champs? Hurrdurr

Blame Ashe .

This is getting downvotes, but it's true.

Ashe's perma-slow is the reason why Riot started handing out gap-closers like candy.

LankPants7 votes

No riot's poor decision making and long term planning is why they started handing out gap closers like candy, Ashe is a champion they use as a smoke screen.

Long Dong Wukong5 votes

Not as far as Rito and Ghostcrawler are concerned. Melee's are boring and just have wet noodle fights, didn't you know?

A Slime Appears4 votes

The champion rooster is fearsome indeed.

They could make slows apply to dashes as well. As in the distance of a dash will decrease by 20% if the target is slowed by 20%. If this is too op then lower it to, say, 50% of the slow amount.

Champion Skin1 votes

Nasus would so love this (after all if someone dashes away right as wither is ending there is very little he can do as wither has a rather short range)

PeachsProperty3 votes

melee champs w/o mobilty vs ranged carry

dead carry as would get kited nonstop.

BUT! I do feel you. The champions with the mobility you mentioned have virtually no "punishment" for having the mobility they do.

Kowe The Ewok11 votes

The main problem is not having one dash, but several ones. One dash is completely fine.

Feathermane1 votes

Quite a compelling arbitrarily drawn line.

JevelFaithful1 votes

Yet the point is there. a few key-moment dashes are ok. (hec,to an extend, lee only has 2 dashes in his kit. Not sure about the cooldown) But dashing every single AA or every second for the whole match is something else. (Yas, I'm looking at you.)

Solaxo3 votes

uhm wouldn't a melee champ be dead here? Since kited nonstop?

Junkο3 votes

Some do, Yasuo can be punished hard if he gets ganked just as he used his dashes on minions to harass (since it sends him further into the lane)

Kalista has none, LB has none, Riven has none, prob a lot more so yeah these need some nerfs.

Feathermane1 votes

Yeah, as Amumu's winrate skyrockets, Riot's priority should be squarely focused on LeBlanc, a solidly tier 3 champion who is hardly played and she loses even when she is.

Junkο1 votes

70% of the players that play ranked is in bronze/silver. Amumu is a noob stomper.

Work it out won't you

Plus Amumu got owned by the new jungle. He can't even clear

Feathermane1 votes

There has not, in the history of League, been such a thing as a champion that is good at low levels, and bad at high levels. The same inane argument has been used to defend Akali or Fiddlesticks (or Riven and many others), who have since been proven as problematic at all levels of play and subsequently balanced. The only difference may occur at professional levels of play, not because a different logic is at play, but because the sample size is greatly reduced.

The reason for this is that simple mechanical skill of using champion abilities and the same builds are present throughout the level 30 population. Players whose game would suffer with more difficult champions are not represented in ranked play.

Leti the Yeti3 votes

well, i went jax and hopped into their fed 11 kills adc... stunned, smitted, beat down by a lamp post with minimal effort

okay so melee champs arent gonna win fights longer than 3 seconds

serpensortia13 votes

That's just how melee work. If they can't get in range, they get destroyed without doing anything. Once they close the gap, if they can stick to their target, they rip them apart. They get so much more damage to compensate for the fact they have a much harder time closing the gap. This in itself is a problem, giving melee vs ranged a binary "can the melee gapclose/can the ranged kite" gameplay.

It might be interesting to see a mechanic like "cripple" n smite, which prevents movement abilities.

Knight SoIaire 2 votes

i think that riot ballances it out with base stats the champions who lack mobility will be much beefier than mobile ones so the mobile guys will trully have to stay untouched, while unmobile ones will take some hits i also need to mention that the base stat changes put tanks in overdrive where ramming 4 ppl and laughing at them is quite safe in some cases

Champion Skin5 votes

I don't really feel like Brand or Vel'koz are all that durable yet they don't really have any mobility (or amazing damage to make up for the lack of mobility as that would make them OP)

Junkο2 votes

Riven takes time to scale?

Sorry but if that was true she wouldn't have such an easy time cheesing a lane at level 2 with 4 abilities.

Meserion2 votes

The big issue is the fact too many ADCs are mobile along with mages. IMO the only classes that deserve to have lots of mobility are Tanks, Assassins, and Fighters. the rest shouldn't have any, instead they should have better crowd control.

There is also the fact virtually everyone has flash which does not help matters.

A possible idea:

New Trinket: Heart of Swamp

Active: Creates an area of "Muddy Terrain" for 5s (800 radius around the caster). Enemies within this area can't use dashing abilities. (90s CD) Upgrade cost: 1000 Upgrade effect: Radius increased to 1100. Duration increased to 8s. (90s CD)

Lord OwlBear3 votes

Don't know if it could work with a "trinket", but I love the idea of an item that could disable mobility spells and abilities

"a possible idea for ruining the game new trinket: free kills on all assassins active: completely deny everything that makes them useful in a team fight by removing all abilities to escape while darius melts their face. upgrade cost: what the hell lets make it free upgrade effect: lets make an even bigger circle of op so that they have an even harder time of doing what their champ should be able to do and just outright remove the thought of fairplay.

if this trinket ever came out it would ruin every single champ with a dash and push them into being picked 1% of the time.

I don't understand

You bitch about mobility, then defend mobility when someone (very nicely in fact) suggests an idea. Not only defend though, but you attack their idea like some kind crazed hobo.

Wtf?

Knight SoIaire 2 votes

there is diference beetwen defending mobility and being insane the guy who suggested representsthe second group instead of ballancing mobility he would totaly remove it and make the game a simple clash of stats where guy who has more dmg and is tankier always wins

Saianna2 votes

Then maybe instead bashing this idea try to balance it out, huh? Who knows, maybe trinket disabling dashing could work well?

Kowe The Ewok2 votes

Acoording this logic Trundle would be the most OP champion in ther league, because his W evolves around the very same mechnic as the suggest trinket and grants the most insane selfbuffs of every non-Singed-ultimate spells.

In fact however, this trinket is even worse since it doesn't activate freely as Trundle's W - but around the caster which reduces the effective range.

Fact is you are free to run out of this by foot and fight around it until it's over - and you know, possibly once in a while "Shurelia's" or a movementspeed buff could be allowed to be useful instead of some exxaggerated dash.

And please watch your tounge, there's no need behaving like a total douche here, one can discuss nicely.
