runes and IP costs show riot hates their players

I hadn't been playing for a while and logged back in, to my surprise there was a 30% off rune sale that ended that very day! "lucky me" i thought, for if i had logged in a day later i would have missed the sale and been unable to take advantage of the reduced price

I believe I am more conservative with spending my IP than most, I try to keep a stock of 6300 for emergency purchases and only buy champions with IP I have beyond that mark. my current target is nautilus and I was quite close to purchasing him, meaning I had just shy of 12,000 IP in my account. I figured I didn't know how long it would be until another rune sale and I should get what I can now and save up for nautilus later (annoyingly, i have been putting off nautilus, one of my favorite champions, for quite a while due to sudden events reducing my IP pool, waiting for his price reduction actually seems reasonable now when it was laughable when i started saving for him)

so i start buying runes that i've had my eye on and-oh, i guess i'm already out of IP, that went faster than i expected, well let's see what my haul was.. one and a half sets of quints, one and a half sets of seals for two months worth of IP saving during the rare once-a-year rune sale

to put it lightly, i am incredibly frustrated that this is all i have to show for my saving and sale sniping. In the grand scheme towards a full rune set it isn't even a dent, even towards expanding from a barebones barely workable kit into something that can cover a reasonable number of situations it's really only a stepping stone.

i would feel pretty crappy cause i didn't have the brains to make a plan prior to buying stuff. what you just explained to me was simply impulse shopping, don't blame riot because you didn't take the time to make a budget which could of been done in like a minute using a calculator, but i do agree runes are stupidly over priced.

how could i have planned for better purchases? the spell vamp runes are a little sketchy, but that's a stat that is really useful on many champions yet difficult to fit into builds, runes and masteries are the only other source for it. hybrid pen is straight up powerful on more champions than most people realize, and the hp/scaling hp seals are practically required since riot nerfed armor seals last season. not to mention that i had a solid bank of IP during a rune sale. this was pretty much the stars aligning for the perfect way for me to buy runes but it still felt like shit because my progress was so small and i probably won't see another rune sale for a year.

Spell vamp is fine and dandy. It's a hard stat to get with items, and is up to the person using it on what is best.

Hybrid Pen Quints?

  • 1.79 Armor pen and 1.4 Magic Pen per quint.
  • 5.37 Armor Pen and 4.2 Magic Pen Total.
  • On sale, these runes cost you 4305 IP

Compared to the Hybrid Pen Marks:

  • 0.9 Armor Pen and 0.62 Magic Pen of a single mark.
  • 8.1 Armor Pen and 5.58 Magic Pen Total.
  • Discounted, this would have cost you 5166 IP.

So for 861 IP extra, you could have gotten 2.73 more Armor Pen and 1.38 additional Magic Pen, which is more than you would have gotten if you could somehow cram a fourth Quint into your page.

The value of the Hybrid pen varies a little on the champion you're playing, but most people agree that if you already have the more effective Marks that you are better off getting something different in your quints.

The Health and Scaling health was a redundant choice on your part. If you do the math, they're tied at Level 5. If you need additional health earlier than level 5, you should have just gotten the flat health. If you can stay safe early and nead the help mid to late game, you should have gotten the scaling. Your decision to buy both makes me think you didn't even think this purchase out.

You can complain that the prices are high for Tier 3 Runes, but what you've shown of your purchasing decisions imply that this was an impulse buy for you, and not something you thought out.

do you think i only play a single champion? health vs scaling health is a huge difference that depends on the champion you're playing. some stay safe early and don't plan on interacting with other champions much before level 6, and some try to get ahead early or are unable to avoid conflict.

Flat Runes are their most effective at Level 1. At level 1, your flat health runes give you 38 HP more than Scaling. That means you can probably take one additional auto attack from a champion.

Let that sink in for a second. You paid 4592 IP to be able to soak up one additional auto attack at level 1, and it only becomes less efficient from there.

I don't care what champion you play, you can probably find a way to not take an additional auto attack at level 1.

you're pretty dumb if you think that doesn't make a difference.

i avoid an auto attack but i still have that extra hp so i can stay out in lane on two auto attacks longer instead of one nothing about runes says you can stop avoiding auto attacks this is why you are dumb.

and while i'm talking about unsatisfying purchases, i'll bring up how i purchased poro rider sejuani hoping riot would listen to feedback about how she looks way too skinny to be sejuani and buff up her model a little. the barbarian queen of freljord would lose an arm wrestling contest with the prissy, tea drinking sheriff of piltover.

dont care, riding a poro and swinging a fking cinnabon thats really all that mattered to me 8D
