"To complete missions you have to equip this icon"

Quepha··300 votes·8,113 views

Why is it that we have to give up one of the very few forms of self-expression for our accounts for like 3 solid months?

Do you guys ever wonder why players don't find much value in summoner icons as rewards when every single event demands we ignore all those icons we collected?

FINALLY someone else calling this BS out.

I shouldn't have to wear a stupid plus/minus icon in order to earn an equally stupid atari controller icon, before I get the chance to get something I want.

Quepha27 votes

Normally this wouldn't bother me much except this is like a 7 week event coming right after star guardian which was over 2 weeks on its own.

Buddy Guy2 votes

Yeah, it honestly seems like an event is running more often than not, so I either barely ever get to use my preferred icon, or I just end up ignoring most events, which is what I do now. I shouldn't even have to make that choice. Given how often riot like to give us icons as rewards, you'd think they'd assume that people actually care what their icon is. This system makes no sense, it's just inconvenient for no reason.

Hello I am Bird66 votes

The only reason it was acceptable for the VS event was because it was your way of choosing which side you aligned with. This is horse shit.

At least equipping the icon made sense for Order versus Chaos. But for Arcade and Worlds there doesn't seem to be much point in having such a requirement. Other than nudging people to purchase an icon of acceptable theme for the mission that they prefer over whatever default one is given.

DeadUnborn3 votes

they use the icon to track how many people are engaging in missions. If you were able to get missions without using the icon people could get missions by accident, and Riot would not be able to measure how many people are actively engaging in missions (therefore realize if missions are being successful or not)

Oh wow, really? Never knew that, thanks!

But if people complete the missions by accident, then how do they effectively measure how many people are actually doing the missions?

They're not asking you to get to diamond in soloQ. Its really not that big a deal lol.

Quepha47 votes

It's not about difficulty, it's about a system designed for self expression and identification demanding that the entire playerbase put it on the exact same setting for 7 straight weeks.

Cavesloth16 votes

Exactly. The missions have no good reason why you need to equip the icon, and during these events everyone has the same damn icon. Not to mention I could give a flying fart about their e-sports crap, but if I want them fat loots I gotta conform like all the other drones to support that shit with their stupid icon.

Am I really "working" towards a mission any more if I have a different icon compared to if I just play normally?

Glory ln Death3 votes

You are acknowledging that you know and care about the missions and rewards. Requiring a specific icon means bot accounts don't get a bunch of loot and people like me - who have everything they want in the game (Sion OTP account - I'll never be playing any champ but Sion on here, and I already own all his skins, so I don't need or want any of the loot rewards) - don't have to deal with annoying mission completion pop-ups every few games.

They could definitely find another way to do it, but the missions should remain opt-in.

DeadUnborn3 votes

Adding to what Glory in Death said, it is way easier for Riot just to check the number of accounts that had the icon activated during the missions and go from there. Yes there are other ways to do it but this was the "cheapest" (using already created systems)

Melledoneus7 votes

They could just make an "activate mission" button, no?

Ralanr3 votes

Or just let the missions be passive.

Melledoneus2 votes

They need to measure who is actively doing them, though.

Maiziea5 votes

This one specifically doesn't bother me because I'm fairly certain my SKT icon counts as a worlds icon, which I'd be using anyway.

But yea it's not really a great system, especially the previous ones where you just see 90% of your friendslist with the same icon, 1% with a bought icon and 9% just don't play the game.

At least it wasn't required for the star guardian one, again I do not mind this one since team icons count as well, just sucks for people who aren't into professional play/people who do not want to spend RP on an icon.

But I hope they stop doing it after this event.

My Waifu Vanilla2 votes

Any "worlds" icon counts towards the missions. Since I just bought the master pass before doing the first mission (the one that grants the default worlds 2017 by winning a game) I just equipped my 2015(?) worlds icon and still got credit towards the master pass missions which also require a "worlds" icon. The same was for any of the other "opt in" ones which could be any of the icons printed throughout the years.

Riot is just retarded for doing this, that is why I didn't do the Arcade/Star Guardian(THOT's) quests.

Even though it's a relatively small thing, I'll always point to how Riot deals with summoner icons as a prime example of how out of touch they are with what the players want, or just how much they don't care. Players really don't care that much about icons, so including a crapton of them for every event or whatever, especially when they have to be unlocked with event currency, it makes no sense and doesn't get people excited. Players tend to latch onto one or two icons and use them forever, and forget about them.

And yeah, requiring specific icons for missions defeats literally the ENTIRE point of icons, which is to be a small but nice tool for self-expression. It just all seems so pointless.

EDIT: The irony of course being that I've equipped an event icon.

Just be glad you don't have to be in a premade of 5

Also it hurts me having this name and not be able to equip the Urf Kench icon ;-;

There actually is a premade 5 mission in there ;).

It might be from the master pass missions though, I'm not sure.

ForFoxSakes2 votes

There's a free one in week 4 that basically needs it. Not required to be in a premade but good luck convincing everyone to take teleport in a random game

Am I the only one who doesn't care about summoner icon as gifts or so either ... :x
summoner icons are boring and barely seen besides in the loading screen :x I like the one i got at halloween 2013.. well thats all

Daedric Etwahl3 votes

Agreed. The VS event was pretty alright since it was a way of changing sides, and the icons were nice.

Meanwhile the Arcade World event had no sides to choose and the only icon I had was some fugly game cartridge, amd it didnt even have a character on it, so dull and boring.

I just really want to keep using my Sona icons but apparently that's a no-no if I wanna participate in events.

And I dont care if it's how they "keep track" of participants. It's an annoying as hell system and more people would be doing the events if there wasn't such an arbitraryr equirement.

LiranMLG3 votes

I don't think its that big of a deal. I think the champs I play, And the skins I Use represent me better than my icons. Idk. Thats how it seems to me.

Aryzyra3 votes

Logged in to upvote this. One quest, sure. I like ESports, so advertising Worlds is fine with me. But I agree with the OP. The summoner icon link to quests seems pretty lazy at this point.

Malothere2 votes

If the icon really means that much then just don't put it on. I personally found that the champs i play and the 3 main champs in my profile represent me more than the icon i choose.

ForFoxSakes13 votes

If you dont put it on you dont get credit for the missions. Entire point of the thread

His point was that he didnt want to put it on for the missions because it reduces his self expression. I told him that if it meant that much to him he should just not put on the icon and not receive the rewards. I probably could of worded that better.

Gene Hikaze5 votes

Yeah that is not acceptable. One shouldn't have to change their behavior just to be a part of the event.

Bad bad bad on Riot's behalf. They're pissing off a lot of people with this and making them NOT want to do the missions, which is counterintuitive to them putting the mission system in in the first place.

They are literally driving people AWAY from using an aspect of the client they spent time and money to develop. That seems like a lose/lose to me and not very good marketing or deployment of this new feature.

Which would you rather have? People participating in something just by playing the game and getting stuff and being happy,

OR

People not participating because they don't want to remove an icon they probably paid good money for, and they system being a flop because of poor design and execution.

My pick would be participation across the board. Rather than pissing people off.

Firethorn2 votes

Personally I don't really care about equipping icons as much, but yeah I can see how it might be annoying for some players

Dengeden2 votes

Probably because other people sometimes forget they can change their icons.

ForFoxSakes2 votes

I think it's just their way to get more awareness for the worlds event and try to get people involved, just like how the pickems gives some reward now. Last year was just icons and the year before that was nothing. I bet a lot of people will do it for the first time knowing nothing about any of the teams

Week 1 quests weren't bad, did them all in 1 evening so that's just 1 night w the icon then you can swap back.

I honestly never even look at players icons, I usually have the loading screen minimized as well prior to the match. All the personal "flair" stuff with ribbons, borders and icons is forgettable and trivial. Is anyone other than the person sporting the flair really impressed by any of this stuff?

I'd be impressed if it was a Braum's pecs/abs icon (aka Santa Braum)

I just ignore missions nowadays. The mechanic doesn't suit me. I just assumed that other players found it fun.

Elipo2 votes

ikr! I hate to use an icon literally everybody is using when I have some others that are way prettier

StoneSparrow2 votes

I paid for rp to get the shurima icon i like, i just don't do the missons. I dont want anymore icons, or ward skins

Osky1 votes

but that icon was available for ip :c

MrryZ1 votes

What if some players don't want to participate for whatever reason? this leaves them room to opt out of the event.

Buddy Guy2 votes

Keep in mind you can't opt out of the mission that gives you the event icon in the first place, so players who don't want that icon have to stop playing to avoid getting it (it only takes 1 win to get). I'd say giving players the option to decline missions would work way better if people are actually averse to getting free stuff.
