3 Things i miss in the Voli Buff - from a 2 Million Mastery OTP

BigFBear··18 votes·11,813 views

@ Riot As a huge Voli fan with over 2 million mastery points on him i miss a few things in his 9.2 Buff.

#1) Could you take a look at his Passive?

Voli has a lack of durability during (team) fights. One reason is that his passive is just too weak to work properly because it has never been adjusted to the rising dmg (and Tank Item HP nerfs) over the last seasons. You often die before it could even go half it's duration. One solution could be to let it reg faster. Maybe 5 or 4 seconds instead of 6. Could be too strong in early laning phase; so maybe it could scale 6/5/4 seconds with Ulti upgrades. Also/Or you could make it work with the Resolve Rune "Revitalize" (currently not happening because Reg not Heal). That would give Voli a bit more options in the Resolve tree while buffing the Passive a bit.

#2) Is there any chance to make W a bit more rewarding vs Tanks?

Voli's W has always felt unsatisfying vs tanky champs. Often you can't even finish them when they are 3-4% HP. That's pretty disappointing for such a long CD ability. I know his new E 8% Dmg buff is for dealing better against Tanks, but his E shouldn't be stronger than his W in any case imo. Now it feels even more like a hot fart in comparison, considering that it has 18(!) sec CD and should feel like an "execute". Better lower the 8% E dmg buff to 5% but for that give his W a CD reduction with Lvl (19/18/17/16/15) and more dmg vs Tanks, so it remains his main dmg ability. If something should make 8% dmg to Tanks than his W and not his E.

(edit: check comment from Katareener. Pretty solid idea imho).

#3) Is there any chance to make Voli's Ult castable while moving?

Voli is easy kitable and has problems to stick to his target. It feels really clunky and outdated if you chase someone but have to stop to cast your melee Ult. It's just a little improvement and wouldn't affect his winrate at all, i guess, but it would make him less tilting to play in some situations.

What if they made his W 4-5 stacks, able to be activated at any number, with increasing amounts of % missing hp damage, with % missing hp true damage at full stacks?

Wow, i actually like this idea. That would also mean you could hit it after just one or two AA's (with lower damage then ofc). You don't want to know how often i died or stopped a chase because of enemy turret one autohit before my W was active and the enemy on 2% HP. Gosh this would be so nice.

Really, the more I think about your idea the more I like it.

Add more true damage ? No.

Even though I agree with you in general; In this case it would actually make sense.

% missing hp true damage

Actually True Damage on his W wouldn't be that bad. I can understand why people hate True Damage, but that mostly affect continuously damage like autoattacks + Conqueror (hi @ Jax). But in this case it's an 18(!) second ability. Also it wouldn't change anything for squishies since they don't build armor anyway. It only would affect armor users. A Tank with 60% damage reduction due to armor would be killable at 6% HP instead of 3% HP. I think that's justifiable.

As an armor carrier myself i know that auto attackers are your problem and not champs like Voli :'D

Glaricion2 votes

I miss when Randuin's Omen actually made an appreciable dent in enemy's ats...

But the issue with % true damage is that what counters it, sustain? It's a cool indirect buff to Olaf and Warwick I guess. Would also argue that sources of true damage are becoming way to prevalent. Yes, it is ridiculous on AA champions, but it should be sparingly used in kits.

imho due to Voli's ult, his kit should be rebalanced around dealing magic damage.

Issue with that though is that AP bruisers have existed for years, yet are starved for items.

Truss3 votes

Yeah I think about that by myself. He needs a clear focus on his stats.

Actually it's pretty weird right now: He needs attack speed (for W and R) but his AA's sucks, since he doesn't scale with AD. You build him HP because of W and passive but his continuous maindamage is his R with is AP damage. But on the other hand he doesn't scale very well with AP.

It feels completely schizophrenic.

PTA wits end, titanic, thornmail, sunfire, spirit visage or the tank item that makes enemies near you take more magic damage

What if what if... infinite stacks :O

First 3 can be gained from anything but everything past 3 is from champs only. Stacks past 3 don’t grant more AS tho.

So like, the more you slap the stronger the chomp. Someone else was complaining about Voli vs other tanks well this would help immensely. This way all those slaps add up for a big boy bite.

Then have bite take the stacks away so he’s punished for chompin too early.

Truss1 votes

Also kinda nice idea. But you have to stack up your W stacks on the enemy champions (like rogues in WoW). Otherwise you could stack up to 10 (or so) hitting an enemy tank and then onehit the enemy squishy from 100 to 0.

MankeyMadness1 votes

It's super tiny but keep in mind its technically weaker on Red camps since they take ~15-30% increases physical damage?

Drastically improves his Drake contesting though having a mini smite that isn't reduced by the 60 armor

Truss1 votes

Well there a many champs who can contest Drake way better than Voli already: Cho, Lee, Xayah, to just name a few.

BigFBear3 votes

His Passive doesn't fit to Volis playstyle anyway imo. I don't really like it. Since Voli is designed to engage in the enemy team pretty fast to lock down and kill a squishy behind the Frontline, he often is alone for a few seconds. He needs something that gives him sustain in this early seconds, not something that proccs at the very end.

Atm it's like: You running in with Voli > you fight a few seconds > your HP is dropping > you run out while dropping > your Passive proccs while you are running out > you regenerate/wait between/behind your Ally's > you can go back in fight again with 50% HP. That's not how an all-in armored bear should fight. And if you just stay in fight you will die because the passive is too slow to unleash his full potential against the whole enemy team. I would like to see something like old Mastery: Courage of the Colossus http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Courage_of_the_Colossus_(Season_2017_Mastery) This would fit way better to his engaging playstyle and would give him enough durability untill his team catches up. Also, a SHIELD as passive would fit awesome to his lore since he is the ARMORED bear!

MankeyMadness1 votes

Camille passive please I'd love to playb voli if he had that shield passive

ZaneShadow3 votes

Huh, solid suggestion. Never really would have connected that old set of item changes to him struggling. Don’t think the regen would be too busted in Lansing phase, since that’s when you have the lowest hp for it too heal.

Or maybe instead of bloating Volibear with numbers, Riot should get to work on his full VGU. Volibear is a discount Warwick/Udyr and has one of the most boring, bland, outdated, one sided one dimensional kits. Everyone does his job better and i honestly don't even see a reason why this champion should even exist. Even look at his name. Volibear. The designers gave up naming him halway trough. Model design? The makers of "The Golden Compass" should sue. And i've already said everything about his horrible kit design. It looks like something put together 10 minutes before the champion was announced.

Half the time i forget this thing even exists, probably because he is so awfully designed and everyone will do better than him. If Riot wants to make Volibear viable, they should turn him into a REAL modern distinctive champion. And not keep him an outdated stat check faceroll mess.

I have to disagree on that. I don't think his kit is boring and outdated. Ok, his Ult is fucking boring since it's nothing more than a damage buff to his autoattcks. That could really change! But the rest is ok. Give him a new passive and change/buff his Ult and he will be fine. What is the point of completely change him so he actually is a new champ?

Is every champ with a straight forward kit labeled as "outdated" now? Do you want every champion have "flashy" plays, jumping and dashing over the whole screen like the new champ designs? No thanks.

I mean, look at Neeko: Would you call her kit special and interesting? No. What makes her so special is just her Passive. A cool Passive or Ult can make so much difference (hi Sylas). I think Volis QWE Kit is decent if you give him a cool Ult/Passive.

Sorry bro, but his W and E are also really boring :p

BigFBear1 votes

Why do you think his E is boring?

Also: not every single ability in a kit can be super duper flashy mechanic. There are at least 1 or 2 abilities in every champion kit which are pretty basic. Even the most overloaded champions have em.

Almighty1 votes

Last time i checked, new Nunu isn't "dashing over the whole screen", and he definitely isn't the boring old point-click 2009 atrocity.

Don't confuse "modern" with "flashy". Volibear DOES NOT need built-in dashes. Riot should stay true to his offtank juggernaut design. The only thing they need to do is build upon that and add more dimension and flexibility to his kit. Just like what they did with Nunu. Improving him without turning him into a whole new champion or shifting his class.

New Nunu is trash and fits a completely different role than the original

Abibyama II1 votes

I mean, He still has his objective control, counter-jungling and he still buffs (although only one person and is automated). The only new thing he got was CC instead of debuffs.

And his stats seems pretty good unless I messed something up

Moody P1 votes

His objective control and camp stealing, as well as his buffing, are husks of what they used to be; Nunu cannot safely kill early dragons anymore by himself because his buff strength AND duration are worse.

Riot should have kept him as a buff/debuff-centric tank, it's a far more interesting role to fill into than another tank with mediocre engage and more delayed "zoning" spells, and it's a role that no tank actually fills anymore.

Not really.

But it doesn't mean that kit as simplistic as Voli's is OK either. ATM he is literally more straightforward then Garen.

Truss1 votes

ATM he is literally more straightforward then Garen.

His Q together with Righteous Glory to catch and fling enemy's (who are 2 screens away) for your team + his E where you can stop incoming jumps like Zac or escapes like Tristan's gives you cooler possibilities than Garen, who can't really interact with enemy's other than just dealing damage.

I don't see where this is more straight forward? But even if it were as you say, what's so bad about it?

His QWE is ok (maybe adjust his W a bit without big changes). Change his R and passive so it's more interesting and he would be fine.

Zero Skill Tank1 votes

I don't see where this is more straight forward?

As Garen's enemy, I get to play around his passive (to keep it down), around his Q (landing slows after he uses it, which is more difficult but way more rewarding), around his W (spreading your damage and CC so he can't block all), around his E (not getting isolated) and even around R, though it kinda sucks (playing the map so that the Villain doesn't need to be near Garen). He is not the coolest enemy, but there is something.

Voli's kit gives you no gameplay options other then "don't get cought in the first place or disengage immediately". If I choose to fight him, it's pure statcheck, either I can do it or can't. If you have a dash you also should avoid dashing over him, but this just stops you from doing certain things if he positions correctly, not unlike Garen's silence.

But even if it were as you say, what's so bad about it?

It's simply not interesting to play with or against a champion this simplistic. There is very little depth, surprise and exciment in Voli. There is also very little depth, surprise and exciment in Garen, but objectively he is just a tiny bit better then Voli.

ModBianca Colt2 votes

I'd really like for his passive to feel a bit more useful and rewarding when making risky plays. Right now, it's extremely subpar, especially when you consider the fact that it's relatively easy to gain access to anti-healing items.

The other day, my friend and I decided to try him out for the first time in forever, bringing him to bot lane to act as an "AD carry". The laning went well, we won and dominated the lane. Managed to get my friend ahead and all that jazz. But as soon as mid-game hit, he started falling off exponentially. Don't get me wrong, I don't find the concept of different champions being strong in different phases of the game bad, it's just that the rate at which Volibear falls off is incredibly high. It almost feels like he's there to rush in, flip someone over, and die.

Correct me if I'm wrong. I don't play Volibear nor do I ever see him in my games, so I might be off the right path.

BigFBear2 votes

In my opinion Voli is stronger in mid to late game, when he has some items and therefore more durability (although his early ganking power is pretty good). I feel strong with him when i get my 3d item (mostly Jungle-Item, Righteous Glory, Dead Man's Plate). Before that he can die pretty fast since his lack of durability as a Juggernaut (weak passive).

But if you fall behind or your team lacks damage you are pretty useless as Voli. Like you said: you can run in, flip one ("uuuhhh!") and die. I am ok with his low CC since it's not the job of a Jugg to CC. But his Ult could be a bit more impactful since it feel a little unremarkable and trivial in teamfights. And he needs the durability to deliver his damage.

I was going to be doubtful as OTP player are often out of line in term of what they ask for buff and nerf but it isn't a bad idea.

I especially like your first point and third point (a very big QoL). The second point is... meh, I don't feel volibear should be strong against tank, for me, his kit is good against bruisers and squishy because of how much mix damage he get by his kit which allow him to build tanky.

Btw, his third point would be a strong QoL buff. Being able to move instead of cast mean not loosing like 1 sec of movement and that is huge for dual/gank. I also feel that the resurgence of ignite made him less prevalent (his regen isn't as crazy as mundo so...).

BigFBear2 votes

Don't get me wrong here. I don't want to "execute" tanks or tanky champs like i execute Squishies with 10%, 15%, or even more HP. But damn, this is an Ability with 18 seconds CD. It feels so disapointing if you hit it on an 3-4% HP Nasus/Mundo/Renekton and couldn't kill him. Sometimes it feels my AA's with Ult make more DMG than my W. Voli is one of the weakest Juggernauts vs healthy champs because he has no strong AA's like Trundle, Shyvana, Skarner etc. and believe me, i don't want him to be strong vs Tanks, but at least let his W execute don't feel like an auto attack. Only because his W would deal 5-6% DMG instead of 2-3% DMG against Tanks, Voli still wouldn't win the other 95% HP.

I don't think that it would be "huge". It's more like a quality of life improvement. Actually, the situations where it would make a difference aren't THAT often. Mostly you cast your R after you fling them and E them so they can't run anyway while in that mini knockback, but it happens that you need it while chasing and then it's the MOST tilting thing. And Voli is already a victim of kiting he doesn't need any more stones in his way in that category.

I have a follow-up question. Why is it that a 'lightning bear' (which is Volibear's theme) is barely using any lightning in his abilities? His ult has lightning. His E kind of has a 'shocky' look to it and that's it? His entire theme is a mess and barely anyone even talks about that.

Actually his theme is thunder, storm, lightning in general, according to his lore and things he say. But you are right, it's not really visualized in his kit, unfortunately.

Serge THE GREAT1 votes

Thunder is technically the sound lightning makes.

"a loud rumbling or crashing noise heard after a lightning flash due to the expansion of rapidly heated air."

That being said, I used to be confused about it too and I still get it mixed up sometimes.

normally i would agrue aginst buffing his passive becuase it would be just one more thing they would need to undo when they fixed how high damage is.

but at this point, i am under no delusions that riot is ever going to fix damage in this game. so why the fuck not.

this game is too far lost.

it always makes me sad when a game i love dies.

diablo 2 was the first game i saw die, but that was only because the game was so old they couldn't properly support the game to stop PK bots because of antiquated code.

and even then.. its still playable outside of PVP

my next game i saw die was "perfect world international" an mmo this game died because it turned too "pay to win". i still miss it.. like i will miss league

then diablo 3 died. or rather it never lived in the first place.

1-60 story is amazing... but they game completely falls flat on on endgame aspect with damage creep that shames even even the worst mistakes of league.

and now league.. im sad to see it go.

im still trying out "path of exile" im not endgame yet ill have to see how they is once i get there. hopefully its like diablo 2 and not diablo 3.. but from what i experience now its seems to be heading in a much more "diablo 2" direction.

i do wish they went more the the cinematic route like diablo 3 wen't. the lack of cut-scenes highly disappoints me. but i cant have everything
