Truthfully, I love the new jungle. But the philosophy of jungling will never change

HateDaddy··7 votes·1,810 views

And that philosophy is early game ganking > all. The changes to this jungle were fantastic honestly. People like to pretend the old jungle was a chess match, that it was a complicated mess that required a ton of thought process behind it. While there is some truth to that, the reality was this: pick shit that can gank early. Worry about scaling later. Reading the enemy jungler isn't really hard as long as you get a good idea of where they start. All you have to do is pay attention to comps and see which lanes are most vulnerable and if all else fails, camp bot lane.

This jungle is awesome. It forces you to consider your starting point, it forces you to balance ganking with clearing. It forces you to limited ganking opportunities since it can beat you up unless you're a high sustained base jungle. Every camp comes with a strength but you lose out on any other strength you picked up with along the way to utilize this. This is awesome, this is actual strategic approach. This is forcing junglers to gamble on ganking or bank on sustaining and getting a few more levels. That's why so many junglers are struggling now, it's not as simple as gank away gank away - at least not as simple as it once was.

At its core though, this jungle or any jungle will always be dominated by any early game ganking jungler. Even though there is much greater decision making involved in this jungle, it's still the same: pick shit that can gank early. Lee Sin, Jarvan, Olaf, Pantheon, Xin and Vi are probably the most common junglers. I might exclude Xin currently but I expdct to see more of him soon. Why? Great ganking early. But the two champions that are the most dominant? Lee and J4. Because unlike the rest aside from Vi (who pays a significant price for this), they get even stronger ganks post 6. As I noted, Vi pays a hefty price: 150 sec CD lvl 1 ult. Everyone else, while they're ganks do get stronger, they're not really that much greater. Pantheons ganks just become "well if I was pantheon, where would I ult to right now."

So what's my point? It's simple really. Lee was s4s best jungler, Jarvan was season 3s. And now, despite all the changes, they're still by far top tier, 1 and 1a. There's a lot of reasons behind this but I believe the biggest issue with them is how dominant they are early with chilling smite and how they ramp up another level at 6 with their ults, with relatively lower CDs (both of which could easily have 150 Sec cD lvl 1 ults and should). They scale well with or without gold (vi doesn't scale as well without gold but arguably scales the best with it). So why on earth would I play skarner, Malphite, etc. when they sustain better in the jungle early but their pressure can't match until 6? I wouldn't.

  • That's my point honestly. J4 and Lee need real nerfs, they need nerfs that either solidify them as all early game with a few draw backs or weaken their early games in exchange for better late games (but j4s late game is already best). But switching around their power becomes less practical. Honestly, if I were to change anything, I'd start at significantly increasing their level 1 ult CDs to at LEAST 140 seconds. They already have powerful pre6 ganks, there's no reason for them to have more spammable ganks than a malph or vi that are just as strong.

The list goes on in terms of what should be done with j4 and Lee but you're approaching rework territory at that point and I wouldn't dare dive into that atm. People aren't even willing to accept that j4 is OP as shit yet.

You're insane ranking J4 above Lee in Season 3. Lee could kill J4 at his own red 90/100 times. Absolutely nothing has changed since that point. Lee was Season 3's and Season 4's best, and is perched to take Season 5 unless something drastic happens.

This jungle is not awesome. It's complete garbage, and does very little to actually increase variability in jungle picks. In fact, it's greatly compressed that number by limiting it to reasonable clear times with sustain only. The increase of hunter machete upgrades is the ultimate proof of Riot's intentions. They want THEIR picks for jungle in the jungle, and ONLY their picks. It's disgusting. The new buffs are practically useless, and almost never worth the smite EXCEPT for obtaining other buffs which you honestly might've been better saving a smite charge for anyway. Speaking of smite, I like how it's chilling smite for everyone now, with MAAAAYBE a trailblazer every once and all. Upgrades aren't much better. For every five warriors you might see one devourer or magus.

The AD bias towards objectives pisses me off, royally too. Why? Why should I be punished because I picked an AP jungler? You don't need better buff control, better tower taking ability, and ultimately better kill potential because you picked a generic, Riot endorsed AD jungler.

I do agree with your assertion though. Early ganking was, is, and forever be the onus of the jungler-- and the better your champ is at that, the better they are at the role, regardless of clear or objective taking ability.

Did you even play season 3 lol

Jarvan was by far the best jungler next to Elise and Lee, Lee saw a comeback more towards the end of season 3 (he wasn't played a good part of season 3 because of early nerfs in season 3). Jarvan was basically top dawg from start to finish until they nerfed his EQs hit box right around the end.

As for the new jungle, I disagree on all points except chilling smite. Trailblazer needs more sustain imo.

Confirmed. You are insane. The nerfs to Lee were insignificant and the majority of the playerbase-- Lee's playerbase-- likely didn't even notice. Those that did, of course, reached critical sodium levels and transcended straight to butthurt elysium. The Trinity was Lee- Vi- Elise with Jarvan maybe a close fourth. Maybe, but I rather doubt it. I played Elise, Lee, and J4 in Season 3. Lee could run circles around both, and still does. J4 will inevitably be nerfed again-- this time for flying too close to the sun. Warwick, Elise, Vi, Kha-- all once had their moment in the limelight. Once they began to challenge Lee Sin, Riot stepped in and gave them the axe.

I'd buy Trailblazer if it gave sustain, but right now there's no reason not to buy Chilling. And that's sad.

No, Elise definitely held the #1 spot for S3. Hell, they gave the Victorious Skin to her, the skin that represents the champion that made the most impact in a season.

Prenerf, I agree, but she took a pretty big hit with the changes to her E. After that, her level 3 was never the same. Lee easily passed her in the later part of the season.

I could be wrong, I haven't played Elise in ages, but I thought it was the changes to her Q that hurt her more? Iirc, her Q's base damage and damage against monsters was lowered, and that just made her weep.

Nah, bro. Prenerf Elise could cast spells before landing in spider form, meaning she could chain E into Q and actually stick to someone. She could also go outside the indicator if a target had actually been inside when she cast. Now you can't do that either, you just drop down into the middle, virtually ensuring your gank fails. Her clear has never been her best quality, but honestly it's her W that is/was the problem. Sustain, AS boost, monster aggro from the spiders, AoE in human form. Q changes hurt lane Elise more than anything.

Well she got the skin as an impactful champion because of her versatility, I read a post that Eve was considered for it as well (and j4 already has a championship skin). Remember when Elise was released right at the end of season 2, she was considered shit because of her ratios. Then people realized building spell pen + tank on her was OP as shit and she was a top laner for much of early season 3 until they nerfed her damage. This is when she picked up more as a jungler and has really never looked back. Aside from nerfs of course.

I'm aware. I didn't have a "main" for jungle really, but I played jungle Elise. The introduction of Golem and Liandry's really allowed for her success. I even built IBG. Like I said though-- it wasn't number changes that killed her, though those were annoying too. It was the loss of fluidity on her E changes. There was zero need for it, honestly. Unlike some champs who allegedly drop off coughLeecough, Elise really does. She picks one person to land her single target CC on before using her single target spells to kill them-- all while having to get close to do it.

You're nuts man lol. Vi was released in s3 and was OP as shit then got nerfed then she kinda fell off (she was never weak after but you know the drill, nerfed and not played because of perception that small nerfs = gutting). Lee wasn't weak either, but for much of the season, especially when All AD comps were a thing, J4 was by far the best with Elise, Eve (who went from mid laner to jungler) and Lee and a few others (Nasus, Zac, Xin etc). J4s hit box got nerfed towards the end and that's when the holy trinity became Lee + Elise + Vi.

Either way, we are grasping at straws here bickering about who was top dawg. It says something when both these champs seem to resurface no matter what. And it still sticks to my main point.

As for trailblazer, in my mind, it needs to be significanlty stronger than chilling smite. Like, to the point where picking a chilling smite enchantment is a 100% commitment to ganks and pretty much shit jungle clear so it can be used on junglers it was meant to help who have good clear without trailblazer (skarner, Cho, Hecarim etc). Instead, it's just abused by Lee, J4 etc.

Release Vi was cancer. I'm glad she's not played as much because she does exactly the same thing now that she did then. Agreed about enchantments. There needs to be a decisive line drawn-- this is for farming, this is for ganking. Maybe have Trailblazer return a little mana/energy/health on smiting a neutral monster and increasing the slow on Chilling.

Limiting jungle picks. i hear that buzzword from the community so much, yet I truly don't understand it: they say that only a handful of junglers can clear, mainly LeeSin and JarvanIV with other really high sustain junglers like Fiddlesticks and Warwick being able to clear all camps before you back.

Yet, I can clear the entire jungle before my first back withNautilus Skarner Volibear Amumu Chogath Jax Malphite Nasus Nocturne Sion Trundle Udyr XinZhao and Zac . On most of these guys, I don't even break 40% health on the first clear.

I don't get the community backlash over jungle: it just prooves that most people will not even attempt to adjust, they will just complain and keep doing whatever they have always been doing, or just copy whatt they pros do

You truly don't understand? TRULY? Get out of here with this disgusting hyperbole. You know EXACTLY why we're bitching, yet come in here refuting THE UNIVERSALLY ACCEPTED truth that the new jungle CRUSHED diversity... and your counterexample is to list a roster of champs reducable to "AA-based" and "tank junglers", the very classes that red side and blue side are geared for respectively. That's not diversity. You realize that many of your examples are the very sustain junglers being referred to, right? Of course not.

People like you are detriments to progress. To accurate feedback. This isn't a bandwagon that you're successfully debunking from your high horse, this is the health of the game that you're trying to take a dump all over as you thumbs up Riot. I'm sick of people like you. Stop helping load Jews on the train, please.

At its core though, this jungle or any jungle will always be dominated by any early game ganking jungler.

It is easy to make this not true.

For a counterexample, consider Warwick from two patches ago. Zero ability to gank early, still a dominant jungler.

The problem we face right now is that "early game ganking junglers" are more like Lee Sin and less like Shaco. They don't pay enough in other areas to compensate for their awesome early games.

Shaco is a wet paper towel and farm horrible in the jungle. His Q has a high CD so he can't go in and out (zed, talon), his box damage, can be easily avoided and his late game is horrible. Next time focus shaco when he ganks you, you maybe get a double kill.

Lee sin is the Muh LC$. He has the right to be pure bullshit with god like early and good late game.

SmokingPuffin1 votes

The point here is that Shaco is an early game jungler, yet he's sucky. By extension, that means it is obviously possible to create a system in which early ganking junglers are sucky. Probably we don't want to go that far.

The thing to emphasize here is that the problem of jungle diversity is a tractable one. We're still stuck in a meta where early gankers are all that get played because that's what it was like in season 4 and we haven't seen nearly enough champion changes to change the score on that.

ProfDrDeath1 votes

So, maybe put it this way:

Early game ganking junglers WITH lategame advantages are all the rage right now. Lee Sin, J4, Pantheon, they bring some good utility for teamfights in their abilities to long-range- or multitarget-engage, disengage or get a priority target out of position.

Pure early gankers without those late-game beneficiaries like Shaco and Elise are not as great, although Elise still sees occasional play in the LCS for her long-range hard CC capabilities and versatility.

SmokingPuffin1 votes

Right. The top tier junglers, and they're aren't many, are strong early gankers who can still play a meaningful role in the late game. Nobody is going to confuse Jarvan for Sejuani, but he can fill the same role in a teamfight well enough that it's not worth suffering through Sejuani's early game to get there.

To me, this is just a simple matter of tuning. Riot has disliked the influence of early game junglers since at least season 2, but they haven't really made the champion level changes to moderate that influence. They seem to hope that making itemization and monster changes will do the trick, which simply doesn't work when balancing champions in the same role. Didn't work in season 3 or 4, why would it work in 5?

In my view, Elise is a properly tuned early game jungler. She was once as strong as Lee Sin. This is a proof of concept that you can take a champion that was perceived to be an all-rounder and introduce weaknesses without breaking the feel of the champion.

Mostly though, we need Riot to decide just how strong early game ganking champions should be, and back that up with champion level changes. No amount of systems level work is going to achieve the target of strategic diversity in the jungle.

Jarvan and Lee both have quite a bit of counterplay. The only issues I could possibly see with their early game ganking power affecting you is if...

  1. You're not dodging their main skillshot.
  2. You're getting camped and don't know how to deal with it properly.

Lol

Lee doesn't even have to land Q to successfully gank and dodging Jarvans EQ with chilling smite is pretty damn hard. Even if both skill shots sre missed, at worst youre slowed and they've closed the gap on you applying slows (Jarvans W and lees E) with red buff slow. So if you're mobile, you probably used your mobility spell to dodge their smite + skillshot and they force you flash with their gap closers + slows. If you're immobile, God help you.

And there's no way to deal with getting camped by either of them. If they want to ruin your lane, they will.

I mean, that hardly distinguishes them from any other jungler with strong ganking potential.

How so? As I stated, there are other strong junglers early but they don't get the massive ramp up in ganks like J4, Lee and Vi do. And vi pays a price for her ult because of its leve 1 cooldown and the fact that it can fuck her over. Lee and j4 don't have that issue. Other strong early game ganking junglers don't get a significantly more powerful gank at 6. Xins ult is okay but kinda meh, Olaf is okay and more damage, etc.

My main point is Lee and j4s power spikes don't come with much draw backs, not in terms of gameplay or CDs

One ayyed king1 votes

Vis ult is also the easiest of the 3 to use. its point and click and cant be stopped or escaped by anything. A brain dead monkey could use her ult effectively.

J4s ult doesnt even apply CC if you have a dash or blink so it requires you to at least burn an enemy cooldown with your EQ before you use it.

Lee sins ult has higher damage and a shorter cooldown then the other two, but its also by far the shortest ranged and takes much more for thought to use effectively. It requires you to either use your other ability to position yourself first or be certain of the kill. Used incorrectly you can end up saving the enemy instead of killing them.

With this in mind its pretty clear that the ults are fairly balanced in relation to one another. Vis is by far the easiest to use and you can almost never go wrong using it as long as you click the right target, J4s requires you to be sure that your willing to trap your self in close quarters with an enemy for an extended period of time and can easily have no effect against a mobile enemy and lee sins has a much shorter range then the other two and requires you to carefully think of your positioning and target selecting before hand.

Due to the complete lack of comeback mechanisms (distinct from "lose-slower" mechanisms; comeback mechanisms are brief power spikes as a reward for outplaying the enemy), ganks are devastatingly powerful. If neither player is an idiot, a gank means the end of the lane for the player who died.

Nothing else compares to the ability to outright win a lane. Not scaling, not farming power.

Compared to what normally goes on in a lane (skillshot hit, some damage dealt; a few cs denied; enemy forced to last hit under tower for one creep wave) the ability to remove the enemy from a lane for a minute or more and get 10 creeps worth of gold on top of that is insanely much more effective. That's why ganking is all that matters for a jungler.

You've clearly never killed the enemy Swain 3 times and then watched his lane opponent feed him anyway.

It's good in theory but a lot of lanes are just decided by matchmaking and no amount of ganks will save them. A lot of others don't know what to do with the lead they get. Ganks are still powerful, just not the be all and end all.

I full agree but the thing is how do you really nerf them? With Lee you have to remove thing from his kit. I mean really remove thing but what could you remove that dont make ever one scream that they destroy Lee? As for J4. I remember when he got his lance combo nerf. Ever one went on and on about he was no good. Let once again he is at the top. I feel even if they nerf him he be just as play. Sort of like Annie still being a big support pick in pro games.

You cant nerf lee for the same reason you cant nerf GP or poppy; their kits are innately broken. You would nerf lee by giving him a total re work. Make him more of "a fallen summoner" (oh wait.... summoners dont exist. GG no RE.) than "monk dude with obscene mobility and at least two "OH SHIT" buttons".

IMO they should have done something like an arcane fighter. Give him a TP skill shot, sure, then give him a movement speed buff, an attack damage buff, and a minion execution that has a short CD (and applies a very strong cripple to enemy champions).

Right now lee has damage, tank, AND stick. by getting rid of his obscene mobility you bring him in line with other champions. By lowering his tank you bring him in line with other junglers. By lowering his damage you bring him in line with healthy gameplay.

Because as it is right now lee sin is NOT fun to play against. He does to much damage without building for it and is to tanky without building for it, in addition to the sheer amount of distance he can pop on you. I think someone did the math and leesin can clear something like 2500 range with his full cycle?

Lee just needs a rework. He has too much mobility and damage packed together with just enough CC to hold his enemy down early. You don't need to pin them down long with a champion like Lee and his damage. Nerfs don't work. I've said it for years, he's the most nerfed champion in league history and yet he's still God tier.

J4 just needs some early CD increases, everything else on him is probably fine.

I don't actually have much issues with Vi, maybe her base damages are too high given that she has innate armor shred and such. Her ult is a one way ticket, it can work against her the same way it can help her. And she's more of a solo queue stomper, organized play deals with her remarkably well.

The rest of champions did get a lot of help. Cho, Skarner, Nautilus and Hecarim have gotten buffs. Chilling smite helps Cho, Skarner and Hecarim and TrailBlazer is really good on Nautilus. But as good as they are, and I believe they are actually pretty darned good, there's just no reason to play them. Lee and J4 can fill basically every role they can and have much safer and stronger early games while still being strong late, j4 unbelievably so.
