Varus Needs...Something

I wanted to expand on another Varus post I saw, but feel it's rude to leave comments longer than the post. First off, I love playing Varus ; he was my first 6300 and the first I ever tried to get good at. I remember fondly a friend taking me to a custom Dominion map and forced me to stand in the middle dodging Nidalee Qs at S3 damage for over an hour. But Varus, since those days, has developed some pretty glaring problems.

  1. He's one of the highest-skill marksmen in the game. Resist the urge to Vayne qq and think about this: you have mediocre range, no escapes, low speed and all your spells must be aimed. Playing that champ takes skill and punishes you severely for not having it.

  2. His passive is just awful. It just compensates occasionally for having terrible attack speed. And it's not even a good steroid for an active except it's not even that. Really, this needs to be added onto his W or just replaced and buff his stats.

  3. He barely fills the Marksman role. Even if Varus is a "caster ADC", he's still supposed to be an ADC, and currently he is not. Unless your team is so ahead that it doesn't matter, getting within basic attack range on Varus is basically committing suicide. He's an easy target.

  4. ** He's near-bottom as a caster**. The DPS of his Q comparing damage to cooldown barely breaks 150 DPS at full build with max CDR. He really only has one damaging spell. W is practically nothing, R is all magic and only AP scaling. This used to work for Nidalee but she needed supreme mobility, did about double the damage, had a heal/Attack Speed steroid, provided vision control and had a Mag Res debuff in addition to melee burst damage. Varus has none of that.

Let's compare him to a similar champ on the mobility scale: Ashe . Permanent slow at no cost, a large AoE cone to proc it on multiple targets, a _global line effect vision spell, an incredible damage steroid, automatic crits on all but first hit and a global, AoE stun that's up to the longest single stun in the game. What does Varus get? He...kinda pokes okay. Like, 3rd as marksmen okay.

Would prefer he is just left alone tbh. I agree positioning is ridiculously hard with him. He has an astronomically low play rate compared to other ADCs because of that. And not that win rate is law but champion.gg has 125+ game varus at almost 67% win rate. I would think that this means there is power to be found.

or that mainly people who main him plays him so they know how to use him. The same can be said about Heimer, the people who play him are those who main him. Varus needs something since there really isn't much reason to choose him over any other poke champion other than "he deals physical damage" and even then you have the likes of Jayce

Are you saying we need to balance him so that he's strong in the hands of people who don't know how to play him?

So that he is actually good, because currently he isn't.

I play Varus extremely regularly, and let me tell you this post is wonkus to the max.

If you know how to use your Q in lane, it's INSANE DAMAGE with RIDICULOUS RANGE. His ult gives him utility like no other adc. I would argue it's much better than Ashe stun for straight up teamfights.

He has built in %max health damage. He has built in greivous wounds.

Seriously, you make him sound decrepit by just listing all his faults. Fact is, he's got insane damage for how much utility he brings, and he's a great bridge between AD caster and AD marksman. Once you figure out how to play him, he's really strong.

Shhh you're going to get him nerfed haha

Haha there's no danger of that. All they've done for the past year is continually sneak in buffs every 4-5 patches. Small ones, to be sure. But buffs.

Agree he is weak how ever I like to go ap as him because that's varus true power . ad wise your looking at his low attack range his q is his damage you need to run botrk and runaans on him I like doing good ole lifesteal in him and if you get ga or a defense item I always get hourglass because it ups his damage and gives him defense

I do agree that he is extremely high on the skill list as far as skill cap goes once you take into account all of his disadvantages but I have to disagree with the rest of your statements if only because of the inflexibility of them. If you had said "His passive is lackluster in some way." I would agree to at least some degree. If you had said "He is lacking as a Marksmen because..." or "He is lacking as a caster because..." I wouldn't necessarily want to immediately oppose your assertions. I mean don't get me wrong here I'm talking about a partially personal and human problem that I have here... I should prolly just get over myself and I'll do my best but it sounds like your stating an opinion like it's a fact and I'm having a hard time not taking it as an insult to him... XD

So sorry about that... human stupidity aside I really do disagree with your points. His passive is not awful. Is it lackluster? Is it underwhelming? Maybe. But I can tell you that it is not awful; it is actually quite useful as a laning tool allowing you a potentially constant 20% AS buff for free and really shouldn't be underestimated as a farming/pushing/poking tool throughout the laning phase. Also I'm not entirely sure why you say he has terrible AS. Taking into account his passive and the fact that he is a caster/carry hybrid it seems perfectly fine.

Speaking of being hybrid... I would argue that he is a perfectly fine Marksman and a perfectly fine caster. If he seems to be lacking in either or both of those two aspects it is probably because he actually is lacking; That's kinda just the way hybrids work... XD He could be a better Marksmen or he could be a better caster but to buff one aspect would require a nerf to the other. I think he's actually pretty well balanced between the two. He has 2 admittedly unusual AA steroids: on-hit magic damage and conditional AS. Not to mention his %health damage is certainly an incentive to weave AAs and abilities. And as far as poke goes I can take him into a game and all but single-handedly poke an entire enemy team off a tower with Qs if they let me... What more could I want? XD

I mean the most I'm getting out of this is that he's not overloaded. He is a strong, but not overbearingly so, caster and a maybe slightly less strong Marksman. Seems quite balanced for the hybrid power he brings.
