Not bragging serious question about placements

I thought I figured out how these work but now i'm just at a complete loss.

According to the popups we got this season everyones rank was reset hard and "even if we win all 10 placements would start lower than previous seasons rank"

I always end my ranked play at gold 5. (Before anybody goes "lolgoldnoob" I only play ranked for the skin then I stop. I don't want to be forced to play rank to keep my rating by going higher) I got gold 5 in flex and solo/duo last season and didn't play again till this season.

In solo/duo I went 5:5 and got placed in Gold 4. In flex I went 7:3 and got Gold 4 as well.

My friend last season ended in silver 1. He won 9/10 of his placements and got placed in silver 4. Another friend of mine was silver 5 but she got 6:4 and ended up in Bronze 5. (Both in solo and duo)

I don't understand how they got placed lower than their previous season despite doing above average but I got placed HIGHER for doing average (and above average I guess on flex)

How do these placements work and what affects them the most? It's confusing

Everything is MMR based under the hood, so if you go on a winning spree to gold 5 and then stop playing, your mmr might well be somewhat higher than gold 5, so when the reset happens you might be going from a high gold mmr to a low gold one, rather than from a gold 5 mmr to a low silver mmr.

Placement games are just games where your mmr is influenced more than normal, and then your mmr at the end of your placement matches decides where you place (rather than strictly your win/lose ratio, although they tend to be pretty correlated).

People who end seasons with mmrs quite a bit lower than their rank would suggest often get a shock when they do their placements the following season, since their rank might say silver 5, but if they're actually bronze 3 mmr, after the reset they're gonna have a rather low mmr and so are likely to place quite low.

Ah, guess I haven't been considering mmr as much as actual rank. I get it now thanks
