Why is Renekton's fury gated against Monsters?

Kingsgrave··29 votes·2,416 views

Its literally the only thing stopping him from becoming a decent jungler

why lock him to being a top laner when not every good top laner is locked into that lane and not every jungler is locked into being a jungler?

Riot hates meta breakers

Riot hates meta breakers and even those who bend the meta because for the vast majority of people that play League of Legends, Meta Changers confuse the &%$# out of them.

If I see two "Supports" (Raka and Lulu) and something like Fiddlesticks, I get locked up. I don't know which one is going to be mid lane. I become confused. And when I become confused, I yell at Riot to make me feel better. Well, I'm one of thousands of people who do this. If Supports aren't confined to the Support lane, I might have to threaten to start playing DOTA2 or SMITE instead of League. Can't have that can we? Riot then happily nerfs Sona again and I can feel safe and warm and happy knowing I won't need to ever think again!

./dripping

Seriously, though, there is a nugget of truth in there. League Players, for the most part, expect to have an environment where they have a good idea of what is going to be their opponents. Anything that screws with the primary Meta is going to screw with the average League player, and that player is going to complain about cancer like Syndra being in mid lane; she's a "Support". Supports go to BOT LANE. Then add it up to thousands of people complaining about how Lux, a Support, is in mid lane too. And soon enough, Riot nerfs Sona as punishment for taking what is clearly stated on the website as a Support to the mid lane and trolling people.

They dont enforce a meta, they enforce character roles.

They dont enforce a meta, they enforce character roles.

They enforce by design that a champion should only be viable doing one thing. This is why they consistently remove ap ratios from champs they deem ad or nerf champions they think should be supports so they cant be viable in other positions. This absolutely pigeon holes the game into a specific meta, unless you just wanna get raped.

However, they at the same time, refuse to say that there is a meta. Therefore it is completely ok for people to take champions into positions riot doesnt want them to be in and throw games.

It is the edged sword of riots anus rapery. You cannot have versatility in champion play style viability, but you are encouraged to try just to make your team lose. your screwed either way. GJ Rito

And who lost an AP raio?

Also, Riot has long admitted that there is a meta. And while they don't want to directly enforce it, they DO support the meta to a degree. Riot does enjoy people going non-meta, but at the same time they have to make sure that an off meta choice doesn't begin to overtake the meta option for a champion or that said off meta pick isn't a little too much to deal with.

That is not enforcing a overall meta, just a character's role. The overall meta is enforced by the resources (map) and match-ups between sets of champions.

There is a difference between 'enforcing the meta' and 'making sure a champion stays fine'.

Take Lulu. You could say that "OMG, she went solo lanes and riot nerfed her so hard, enforcing the meta!" Or you could take a second look and say "...Well damn, solo Lulu was really being toxic." They didn't enforce support lulu in any way. You can still take her solo if you want.

Kind of the same with Renekton. While yes, this does limit his jungling activity, imagine if it DIDN'T. You would have quite possibly the best jungler in LoL bar none. He would have great sustain, good clear speeds, and even good ganking potential. Most junglers (baring Lee) have two out of three or those, or one super specialized aspect.

Lulu's gameplay in top lane wouldve been nerfed regardless of what her role was. It was oppressive and broken.

Except in that one case it resulted in sup lulu being sent to the same level as taric when it comes to supports.

Ok, look at Janna. Was nerfed for her ability to instaclear waves with her Q, and is still a top tier support.

Same thing as enforcing a meta

It actually isn't, it is enforcing a character to be played in a specific role (Specific character meta), the game meta (what people are talking about when using the word 'meta') is enforced by match-up data and map resrouces.

They do enforce the meta. Maybe not the extreme, but they do.

They did a lot of tower changes to ensure bot lane stayed 2v2. Although this had more to do with 2v1's being too boring for E-$port$.

And it took them a long time to even do this right. They kept punishing by changing towers. When the problem was that Dragon wasn't worth fighting in lane over.

Not saying they heavily do this. But the meta of 1-1-1-2 is enforced.

But they don't overdo it on champions all that much. S4's jungle is a good example of this. A lot of champions saw play because they could go into the jungle. Good example being some of the tankier junglers. Having heavy cooldowns or mana costs that would keep them from entering a solo lane even though they're barely viable as is at the jungle. I would say WW was an exception of this in S4 because chalice was breaking a lot of rules. I hear Sejuani can work though.

Champion Skin1 votes

There is also the whole fact that an ADC is necessary because you need to kill towers and they are the best at doing that as safely as possible (though it is less necessary now that baron is so insane at pushing though you still need some sort of high and reliable sustained damage to deal with tanks)

Riot probably never considered Renekton viable in the jungle. The change is to make Rene more aggressive towards the enemy champ in lane. Who'd knew anyone actually played him jungle.

whether or not they played him jungle, his kit specifically limits his ability to jungle. Im mostly wondering WHY they did that.

Why does he have reduced fury generation on monsters? Why does he have reduced healing healing on monsters? etc.,

Kuroi861 votes

Possibly an accidental nerf due to them reducing his fury and healing with lane minions, don't know.

GaleWinUnleashed1 votes

I tried it out anyway. Those anti-jungle numbers really made sustain difficult early on, but ganks were extremely effective if i was able to bring 50+ fury into lane for a 1.5 second stun.

Some pro probably did Renekton jungle and rekt face with it.

Yeah they nerfed Renekton so everyone went above the bar

what of it

I have a question about this. I'm looking at the wiki and I don't see where Renekton gets less fury from monsters. I see that he gets more Q healing from champions than minions or monsters, but I don't see anything else. What does he have in his kit that gates his fury against monsters?

This isn't meant to be a rude question or anything. I legitimately don't know what the fury gating you refer to is, and I'd like to. I always thought Renekton was a kind of bad jungler just because his ganks aren't great and he does better with burst damage than sustained damage, making his clears kind of slow. I didn't know there was something in his kit directly discouraging jungling.

Upcoming changes, on the PBE I believe.

Sightless661 votes

But he's saying the fury differences exist right now, on live. I'm not sure they do, and I can't find anything in Renekton's ability text about that.

His heal and fury generation are halved for non champions. For minions it makes sense because he would be too oppressive in lane, but I dont understand why its for monsters as well.

These differences are going to be even more drastic after the changes on the PBE take effect basically reducing the amount of fury he could get from monsters to 1/6th of what he can get from champions.

Sightless661 votes

The fury generation is halved for non-champions? Interesting. I thought it was constant, like I know it says 5 per autoattack and 5 per target hit by his Q. Odd that it wouldn't specify anywhere that he gets less fury from monsters.

The healing makes sense though. It is boosted for hitting enemy champions so it gives more in a fight than it does for passive sustain. I can't argue with that.

I reread the PBE changes. From what I'm reading, I actually think that the difference in fury generation for champions and minions is being added on the PBE, not enhanced. Are you sure the difference actually exists on live right now? If it did, why would the changes read:

Q - Cull the Meek FURY GENERATION ON NON-CHAMPION HIT:: 5/target >>> 2.5/target FURY GENERATION ON CHAMPION HIT:: 5/target >>> 10/target

That says that for his Q, the same fury is given for both right now. I think the fury difference is being introduced. I'm not certain it is on live right now. Are you completely positive?

I used to play Renekton exclusively jungle before the changes, and he was pretty good if you managed your fury correctly.

In my opinion (could be biased or I just don't play right) when you compare Darius to Renekton EVEN IN EARLY GAME - which Renekton is at his prime at, Renekton needs a heavy buff.

Junkο2 votes

Renekton got nerfed and Darius was designed to be a lane bully (so was Renekton but not to an extent that Darius is)

Champion Skin1 votes

Well Darius should be stronger then Renekton in that Darius is more vulnerable to ganks use mana and also have no sustain or mobility (vulnerable to ganks)
