Why to be careful when choosing Top As your Secondary Role

So many mid laners i Know will go into Top as a secondary role since it's a solo lane. However I wish to warn those mid laners, as a fellow mid lane main myself, that top is a very different lane. Here is some of the following reasons

-Way longer gap from the mid section of the lane/river to get back to your tower -Way bigger gap to get from Nexus to Tower -The way you have to think about how the jungler will approach you is completely different -The way you ward is different -The way you approach trades is different, a bad trade in the top lane is much more punishing than in the mid lane -The way you roam is completely different -The meta literally HARD changes EVERY patch, and IT DOES matter

Frankly Top laners have a very hard role in my belief for they have to also constantly update and practice their champion pool. I will give a example, a mid lane main can chose a champion like Ahri, or Lissandra, and they will be set for life, they quite honestly never have to learn a new champion ever again. Those two champions unless they receive hard nerfs, will always be sitting at a safe 48-52 percent win rate, they will have metas where it increases or decreases. But they will always be near the 50 margin. Top laners however are very prone to major nerfs, and major buffs, and are also very vulnerable to item changes. Hell the TP nerf completely effected how teleport primary users have to chose to use teleport. Frankly once you hit plat elo, the only time you will see a good top laner, is when he no lifes that role.

So this isn't me saying don't play top lane as a secondary role, this is me warning, understand the role in no way, all because it's a solo lane, makes it another version of mid lane.

As a top main I don't think the meta changes as often, or at least it is comparable to the mid lane. There are typically 3 meta top laners at any one point, but the meta doesn't even matter at lower elos in terms of its exploitation to win lane.

Mid lane activity is way higher and more dangerous due to the several ways to approach the lane. It is also a more important lane to hold than top.

I don't relearn champions to reestablish myself in the meta. In fact, I would say if you do that you do that, you will do poorly in top (or in any lane). The pros frequently say just play the champion you are good with and that's it. Meta exploitation of champions doesn't really even occur until upper platinum and diamond. Even then if you are good with a champion top, keep playing them. The meta may change a lot but playing champions that you are subpar with to exploit a potential power mismatch is silly at low Elo where almost all matchups are purely skill based.

The top lane is more about wave management and understanding that you probably won't kill the opposing top laner as often as a mid laner. If you don't know how to manage the wave you won't do that well top.

Trust me, I'm fully aware about all the differences.

Unfortunately, Top is the only other viable option as a Secondary for Mid Mains because otherwise you're putting down Support... Which means you have a 99.9% chance of getting Support.

I apologize and try to switch with the mid or support every time I get Top. Which seems to be about 30-40% of the time.

Sucks.

I always felt jungler was a much more simple option, that is also fun to learn ^_^
