Am I building a tank or a mage? Cause I can't tell anymore....

Typically in games, mages are usually glass canons. But in lol, mages seem to be getting items that have tank like health attached to them. I mean I get it, its so immobile mages have some defense, however, this kinda goes against the definition of mages.

After the mage rework, both the new ap items have health stats. I feel riot should have come up with more interesting defense systems for immobile mages other than attach health states to mage items. There are already so many health ap items and riot just added more. The dash items ap is so low its not attractive to me plus rabadons is so expensive I'm starting to wonder if it is cost effective.

I like the idea of mages using there mana as a shield but the item takes time to build and I don't patients. But it is along the line of a mage defense system and we need more items like that.

Anything else wouldn't be fitting thematically:

tanks/fighters have resistances and CC. ADCs have range and lifesteal. assassins have mobility. supports have shields, CC and heals.

It turns out that the mage defenses are HP, range and CC.

Just some creative suggestions that might be op, but if you think hard you can get ways to balance it. These are active like zhonyas.

Cloak of invisibility. Become stealth-ed for 1 sec when not facing enemy champs. Maybe cost 80 percent of mana on activation or something like that so it does not get abused.

Multi clone. Creates copies of caster for 2 seconds. Give it a hard condition for active also.

These are the kind of defenses I'm talking about. Not just stick health to every ap item.

Yooooo that would be so cool, but probably difficult to balance.

they give a lower amount of ap for their health. they don't have that much defenses.

Mages have always had more resistances and stuff because they can't benefit from something like lifesteal. If spellvamp was balanced, mages could drain-tank in a fight instead of having to use all of these defense stats and utilities.

Well my point is, they should have more creative defenses like Zhonyas. Mana cloaks/speed boost. Anything but health or armor/MR

Traditional glass cannon builds are pretty much obsolete these days. Back in the day, ADCs for example used to build IE, a Zeal item, BotRK/BT for lifesteal, Mercurial if the enemy team was cc-heavy, then GA as their one and only defensive item. Offensive/defensive hybrid items such as item 3812 item 3025 item 3156 item 3046 item 3053 item 3072 (without the shield) did not exist. Damage inflation has grown to such an extent that every class needs at least 2 items that give defensive stats, sometimes more, if they want to have a meaningful impact in fights. If you're not a champion that can build tanky while still doing decent damage, then you're a liability to the team.

The game is full of and dominated by hyper-mobile utility bruisers and fighters with powerful damage and durability who can get to you quick. Immobile mages are just too vulnerable in a game where everyone can either get to them, kill them from across the room or tank through everything they have and tower-dive them. They're giving them defensive stats as a game balance thing... because pretty much EVERYONE has to be a semi-tanky damage-dealer now. Glass-cannons are rare and risky. Even adc's are tanky now (Graves) or have ways to cheat death and as such are less fragile than they seem (Kindred). Then there are all the strong bruiser items making any AD champ who wants to be into a durable damage dealer. Mages needed something.
