Lux, Xerath and Ziggs all feel way too similar.

They're all long-ranged siege characters with slows and poke emphasis. Their kits are almost cut out of a mold:

Passive: Some interaction with auto attacks that (theoretically) requires you to get in auto range. Q (or lux E): Long range aoe poke. W: AOE utility E: (or lux Q) hard cc of some sort. R: Near-global damage spell.

All skill shots. They all perform almost exactly the same function, and don't feel terribly different about the way they do it. They're all safe siegers and they all can do massive aoe damage, but fail to seem really different while doing so. Oh sure, Lux crowds out the other two pretty bad right now, but these three champs feel pretty interchangeable.

But riot's reworking Vel'Koz because he "isn't different enough" instead.

Wow! It's almost like if you reduce a champion to its most basic ability descriptions, ones on the same class will sound similar!

Xerath is better at long range poke and sieging. Ziggs is safer then Xerath due to mobility, and is better at zone control Lux is the safest due to double snare, large lasting AoE slow, and shield. She is more utility focused then the others

They feel fairly different to me IMO.

Being worth picking because they have an S+ rating in range doesn't mean they're identical. Lux is way more utility-heavy, Zigg's has much better AoE/global pressence, and Xerath is much more about singling out specific targets.

I feel what Riot means here is a matter of input vs. output.

Playing Vel'Koz feels really unique and interesting as an input. His skills are fun to use and have great game-feel, animations, sound effects, and unique patterns.

What Vel'Koz's kit actually brings to the table strategically is exceptionally bland as his output though. Everything unique about him is mostly aesthetic, offering no real strategic impact. Splitting projectiles, laserbeams, and AA's that go through wind-wall aren't actual reasons to put him in a certain team comp at the end of the day.

In what way are Xerath/Ziggs/Lux's outputs any less bland. Xerath: Long ranged damge + a smidgen of CC. Ziggs: Long range aoe damage. Lux: Long ranged damage + a shield. At the very least Velk brings true damage.

Because they don't play the same? You're over simplifying their kits in an attempt to support your argument that really makes no sense to begin with.

Lux eclipses both as she has way better wave clear, harass and high damage on a wide area with minimal cd plus team utility. Not to mention that her hard CC is easier to land and her passive allows for a 2-hit proc of TLD.
