That's different, that's an interaction between smite's damage and his ability going off whenever damage happens within the circle, not smite and one of the different spell effects

it'll still be good with runic echoes

The whole point of the nerf to smite was because Runic Echoes is too good already at clearing, the extra sustain from building SV with it is unnecessary (or through effects like Akali's or Morg's passives). Note that they still do spell vamp off the item itself though, which does 80 +10% AP times 250% against monsters.

Aka your Morg is most likely being buffed.
