What's the point of an ADC?

I remember when I started, ADCs were consistent damage dealers that would clean through a fight given time and space (barring a few eg Graves), and their damage matched that philosophy. An assassin or burst mate was needed to 1 shot people. It seems to me that somewhere along the line this became ADCs deal huge damage. Frankly I wonder if having AP wasn't an issue (even now you can get away without it), would we even SEE not-ADCs picked mid? My case and point is Vayne. I was always led to believe that she built attack speed so her W would do the work irregardless of the targets resistances. Yet I'm seeing her 2 shot squishies off Q and/or IE crit boosting alone.

I liked it back when ADCs had to think about their abilities to beat you...

An ADCs abilities do not tie in line with the fact that they are ADC. When you think about adc you should think about draven, What does his abilities really do to benefit him aside from his Q? Auto attacks are primarily where ADCs shine, and if you are getting caught out from an enemy adc vayne, her worst nightmare is a point/click CC such as a ryze W. Or other forms of CC. Even with a merc scim, she will have to use that to get away from the chance of dying and it is on cooldown. She is a very assassin-ish ADC but you need to remember whilst her damage is very high (Crit vayne/botrk/ TF+Duskblade vayne) she is very squishy with low base health and can easily be shut down in the early game making her late game alot weaker than some would anticipate. Vayne does take skill in regard to playing her properly because while her autoattacks and her W are the main source of her damage, the Q(Tumble) and her R(Built in ghostblade), passive, and her E. are all needed to be use mechanically in lane to out-posisition certain things that can kill her. Such as Skillshots/ skillshot CC. The main thing to remember with a crit vayne is that CC = Dead vayne. She needs to be the first to die, or the main priority. She unlike other ADCs are more beneficial in the late game due to her kit allowing her true damage, thus making it possible to kill anything in her path, even a full tank alistar with his ult active. She is a very powerful adc in the right hands, but CC = Her nightmare.

Not to mention, she has a short AA range unlike other ADCs, making it hard to lane against. And AP mids will more than likely always be a thing, because there are a few current forms of damage in the game.. %life damage, AP damage, AD damage, and true damage. This is why people take AP characters mid, Because they can carry and generally have CC/utility, and that's a major part of a team comp

And not to defend vayne, I personally play a form of crit vayne. And while some of it could be considered "OP" to a certain extent, most of it has to do with the fact that vayne scales better into the late game than most other champions, due to her ability to hurt with her W. and going crit vayne it makes it difficult to play against..people need to remember CC is her enemy. Ontop of the sheer fact that unless a crit vayne is fed, i do not anticipate her "one shotting, or two shotting, or even 3 shotting" somebody unless she is ahead by a decent amount. You can blame a fed vayne on the ADC, But its best to not blame anybody. If you ever see a vayne being picked, Try to go for something that can displace her, or avoid her. Or someone who counters her. Sivir, caitlyn, Lucian, ezreal, draven, ETC. And have a support such as janna, or soraka to help you if things are going badly.
