More class specific items

I think if there were more class specific items the game's balance would be better, and be overall more enjoyable. We already have 3 of them item 3074 item 3748 item 3085, but their specifications are kind of lax. just melee or ranged. While this is a good start, I feel that with more specific requirements, the overall strength of the classes would be easier to balance out.

A major issue with item balance is with AD champions. This is because they are split between 3-4 different categories of play style. Marksmen, slayers (assassins/skirmishers), fighters (juggernaut/divers), and sometimes specialists. The reason for why AD champions are such an issue is because their items directly influence their overall damage with auto attacks as well as many of their abilities (with some exceptions). Where in comparison, AP champions and tanks do not have to deal with that because almost all of their items are focused in one direction (tanks are based around improving their defense while AP champions are focused almost exclusively onto their abilities). Because AD items have 2 areas of focus, they become much harder to balance around because where one class benefits well, another also benefits to a similar or even greater extent. Sometimes these benefits span multiple areas too. For example, while 18 Lethality could be average with an auto attack in terms of damage, it is significant with an ability that deals physical damage and scales well with AD. This is because abilities almost always deal more damage than an an auto attack. In other words, abilities offer larger bursts of damage usually offering higher damage outputs than the current level of auto attacks. A 300 damage ability is much more significant than a 120 damage auto attack While the 18 lethality effects the enemy the same for both cases, the associated damage is much different.

So, to fix this issue, a good idea would be to make class specific items, where unless the game tags the champion as a member of that specific class, they cant use the item. Most champions have 1 class (some have 2). Lucian is classified as a Marksmen, Illaoi is considered a Juggernaut, and Talon is defiantly an Assassin. All 3 can happily use the item item 3071. Similar to how item 3031 item 3142 and item 3046 are commonly shared items between different AD classes.

Here is another advantage with more specific items. It becomes easier to balance classes as a whole without having to worry about how it effects others. You can make a marksmen specific item that has really high AD stats and not make all assassins overpowered. You can have an assassin item with a lot of flat penetration than does not make marksmen or fighters OP. You could have an item with higher mobility that does not make assassins and marksmen broken but gives juggernauts an advantage where they are innately weak.

I thought about this and while it does make sense and would balance the game.

Rito will never do it. They can barely balance abilities and runes.

You think adding in item restrictions will help this?

Hell no.

What would happen is that some 'core' item from some champion would be stolen and restricted away making them unplayable. It would be months or years before that champion is even looked at because that item is now off limits to them.

Well, I agree and would not suggest limiting all the items. Riot has defiantly made it seem unlikely this would happen in the future since it has yet to happen even though it has been suggested and also done by other games many times in the past. It is a proven concept, but Riot does not seem to want to adopt it. And while I agree, it would defiantly shake up some champion's builds, it would likely not do anything worse than what has been done before over the years. Maybe this could be the "preseason patch" which always seems to destroy the game's balance heavily.

That being said, I more was leaning towards making new "core items" for the classes and then leaving the majority of current items open. Maybe restricting some items like item 3147 for melee assassins, item 3071 for those tankier fighters, and item 3031 for AA based marksmen, but making the majority of new items class restricted. Setting up 1-2 common core items for the classes. Where they are good to use in most situations but are not necessarily buy or feed for every champion with in that class.

I hear you, but also you got to realize you have tank items you would have to try and restrict.

Does that mean a marksmen or mage can no longer get warmogs, spirit visage or etc.

I think it could balance if only tanks could get tank items, ADC get AD items, Mages get AP items, Supports get utility.

But gold generation is a problem as well. Support items, kleptomacy, pyke, bounties.

Really what I think they should do is do a re-damage scaling.

Like when WoW was like... you just did 7.8 BILLION DAMAGE... then they brought it down to 17,000 or whatever. The damage was the same, but the numbers were smaller. It also makes balancing easier.

When you 1-SHOT someone with 4k health and 'x' damage combo. Is a lot different if they had 100 health max hp bar. And your abilities did like 10-15 damage a piece.

I agree that many items would have to be considered for the exception champions like Pyke. As for other class items, I do not really see much of an issue with the defensive items besides item 3025 working with Ezreal's Q, and even that is only so-so.

Most AP items are actually class specific because the abilities decide what is good and what is not. You grab mana items on champions who scale mana like Ryze and it works out because mana items usually have either a lot of health attached or some kind of CDR built in both of which work well with Ryze's class. burst mages love high AP, health, and magic penetration item 3165 item 3116 both work well and even provides nice passives. AP items tend to suit the situation more than the champion too. But since all AP items will only influence abilities, they can be more diverse in their usage. All any AD based champion cares about is high AD/AS maybe high penetration. Who cares if you have an item like item 3814 which has a really good active, because it has really meh damage and has health. Marksmen have limited use for health and cant really use the active, most juggernauts do not care for the item either because others do its job better. Only some assassins and divers use it, but that is mainly for just the active. The 55 AD is the worst part of the item. Which is the one thing most AD champions care about.

We don't want more streamlining in this game

I'm not sure class-specific items is the way to go for LoL.

A big part of the charm with the current itemization is that champions can build in the direction that best suits them, rather than being forced into a specific direction based on their class.

Also: while a decent number of champions like Illaoi, Talon, and Lucious do fit snugly into a specific archetype, there are a fairly substantial number of champions in LoL built that don't fit neatly into any category at all.
