40% CDR Ezreal is now super awkward

LaughingStapler··36 votes·8,227 views

The changes to Qs CD mean that at max CDR, a consecutive Q will have a 1.2 sec CD. SpellBlade from IBG/TF has a 1.5 sec CD. I found this out the hard way using IBG and noticing that my 2nd Q offered no slow or bonus damage. I never thought I'd say this, but there is a thing as too much CDR on Ezreal. It seems anything over 33% (4.5-4.5*.33-1.5 = 1.515) suffers from this issue.

This is yet another situation where ER is shown to have poor synergy with Ezreal. For one, his Q doesn't crit. so neither the mana return nor the crit. are as useful as one would expect. Of course, you still auto but not quite as much as other ADCs. ER is much more synergistic with nearly every other caster ADC (think Lucian, Corki, Graves). Now, because Ezreal gets a Sheen item to make his poke more potent, he already has 10% CDR and ER caps it to 40% after IE, creating the issue described. You could suggest not to get IE on Ezreal but that makes the whole build seem rather pointless. Why build 40% crit. chance and then fail to get the biggest crit. damage increase item in the game?

Ezreal has needed some buffs or tweaks for a while but I now dislike the latest Q changes and would much rather they buff his W to include an AD scaling or something of the sort. Alternatively, his Q could have a longer CD but some sort of crit. modifier etc. I'm just brainstorming but I shouldn't have to worry about building too much CDR on a champion that seems so suited to it. It's strange enough for me, but just imagine for someone newer. They'll probably think IBG is bugged. Riot needs to really figure out what Ezreal is supposed to do best and how to get him to that state smoothly. I don't want something terrible and lackluster pigeonholed into essentially one build and playstyle like what happened to Kog'Maw.

Ez's Q doesn't crit because no one wants crits from over 1k range on a fast skillshot that's on a sub-2 sec CD.

At no point did I say Ezreal's Q should crit. Having a crit. modifier isn't the same as actually critting. See Ashe.

dont buy essence reaver then? ibg grants 20% cdr. pick up two cdr runes (one scaling, one flat) and another 10% from ghostblade or deaths dance and be done with it.

seems like your issue is that you want to brute force a specific item into your build instead of building items according to the champion.

marksmen shouldnt be able to fit 30% cdr into a standart adc build with loads of crit and attack speed anyways. either youre a caster, or youre an auto attack carry. chose one.

i hope they delete the new essence reaver or at least nerf the total cdr to 20% at some point.

i hate the fact that instead of making some ad/cdr items to allow them to go for a caster build instead of a carry build, they just gave them cdr on top of ad/attack speed/70% - 100% crit chance.

Robbit Mang1 votes

two zeal items + inf edge and Trinity force/essence reaver = 100% crit chance and that amazing cdr. That's not even an unusual build, that something that Lucian or ezreal could build and not be even looked at weird. Seems so strange to me why they would make it so easy to get 100% crit chance

CasterGilgamesh2 votes

well they did reduce the ad of IE plus Reduced the Attack speed of Hurricane a lot and th removed the passive bonus movement speed all the time on phantom dancer so now you need to be close to the enemy.overall adc's are so busy building crit they don't bother with a lot of damage items which can be bad for caster adcs like Ezreal Varus though i've found a build path i think lets me get 100% crit plus a big amount of ad.

Rather agreed with this part. Except, instead of cdr runes, I'd run 12-18-0 masteries, with 3% cdr from the cunning tree, then get 30% cdr from my items.

Non-crit build:

item 3025 item 3158 item 3004 item 3036 Two of: [Defensive Item] or item 3153 or item 3072

Crit Build:

item 3031 item 3078 item 3036 item 3087 item 3158 One of: item 3812 or item 3142

In general, I agree that the crit build is awkward, because it seems like it should be this:

item 3031 item 3508 item 3078 item 3036 item 3006 item 3087

However, unlike OP, I'm actually okay with Ezreal not building crit. He seems like he should be more of a caster marksman, who goes for a mid-game spike instead of hyper-scaling with crit, like Corki. The problem is that his early is weak, and since he kind of needs to build Tear so he won't go oom (another reason the crit build above is awkward), so it takes him too long to reach his midgame spike.

Earl Eulrich1 votes

though i think that´s just the problem...ER doesnßt fit in a caster build. That´s just stupid. It has been designed as alternative for AD-Casters in the beginning, now it´s just "free CDR" for any marksmen that stacks crit. Just like a bizaro version of itself.

Ap Ezreal has huge burst but no waveclear, Ad Ezreal has more utility, less burst and still no waveclear. They kinda have to buff his w and ult and take away some power from his q. Wouldn't this be fair?

Robbit Mang2 votes

AP ezreals ult clears an entire creep wave instantly, then you q a few times on camps or other minions and it's back up in like 30-45 seconds and you can clear another wave. IMO they need to rework his W entirely because his kit is currently 3 flat damage skillshots and a blink that does damage, absolutely 0 utility without an ice born gauntlet and worthless when behind. AP ezreal is fun and all, but this ability for him to be both is keeping him from excelling at either

Cosnirak1 votes

I agree with your analysis pretty much. Though I'm not 100% sure the ability to be both is completely keeping him from excelling at either, but it at least makes it harder. But the moment you get rid of either option you piss off a bunch of dedicated fans and are 'dumbing down the game' and 'taking away options' and 'killing diversity.' It's a lot easier to leave ~1/127 champions not quite good enough at anything than to put a lot of effort into very carefully perfectly balancing 1 champion to do two things at once all the time.

I do kind of like OP's suggestions though. I also think maybe a 1 second cd on spellblade cds might be ok but I don't know enough about that to be at all certain.

Solution is simple: hybrid ezreal with rageblade, gunblade, runes of hybrid pen and precision mastery #kappa

(seriously though, i will have to try this build at least once)

Robbit Mang1 votes

Well when you're playing ezreal you always grab the precision mastery anyways because your kit is mostly magic damage, only physical damage being autos and Q (without Lich bane).

I ran into a plat II ezreal main running that build and he wrecked face. seemed to focus a lot on split pushing and completely mowed down all of our turrets. It seems like it'd be pretty cool to try out

Iceshield991 votes

Riot won't buff ap ezreal more -- think about the pseudo lich bane during season 5 -- Runeglaive IT was immediately nerfed the next patch because ap ezreal with decent early game is toxic to the game

EndlessIsolation5 votes

What if they redesigned his Q to receive some form of scaling % dmg on crit (IE: with 50% crit it does an extra 10% damage or some such, numbers can be balanced/scaled accordingly) this gives him a reason to weave when he can (more damage from auto crits) but also lets his Q have something similar to a crit without being overbearing as a crit.

Then they can change up the % and it wouldn't effect AP EZ unless they buy crit (which would be wierd, but i could see some obscene ap/crit split build chunking with Q somehow) but it'd be better than it is.

The thing I find odd is that he has this magic gauntlet but everything is just "fire a straight projectile", I think they should change his abilities up.

OneSmoothDude2 votes

I like it. Right now there's this duality within his Q where it's kind of like an auto because it applies on-hit effects like an auto (which is why all Sheen items are good on him, obviously), but it can't crit like an auto. Yet, it would be understandably weird for an ability such as his Q to crit fully. Having a modification crit % of some sort would be a great way to balance this friction out.

Riot has certainly found other unorthodox methods to balance champs, after all. Just looking at marksmen alone, Kalista has that "autos only do 90% AD" thing and Caitlyn has...well...just look at her passive as written on the wiki.

Caitlyn's next basic attack against enemies rooted by Yordle Snap Trap or slowed by 90 Caliber Net gains an additional 650 range and deals 50% + (critical chance × 1 + (0.5 × bonus critical damage))% AD bonus physical damage, modified to 150% AD versus minions and monsters. Additionally, Caitlyn permanently has 10% bonus attack speed and her unenhanced basic attacks each generate a stack of Headshot, doubled when attacking from brush, granting her next basic attack the same bonus damage at 6 stacks, though this does not benefit from bonus range, nor is it consumed on other instances of Headshot.

Goodness. A crit modifier on Ez's Q seems pretty damn simple in comparison, huh.

Anybody have any reasons why OP's idea might be a bad idea? And if so, how could Riot avoid this problem?

Why not make it like MF's ult? The ability can crit, and it has normal crit chance, but only does 1.2 damage on crit instead of double damage?

OneSmoothDude1 votes

Yep, another great example. The numbers would need to be tuned specifically to Ezreal's case, for sure, but it's not like Riot doesn't do this type of thing. OP is definitely on to something here.

Just practice his mechanics and play him AP mid. From what i've seen, both when i played him and when he was in my team or as an enemy, he has a lot more damage with AP on W,E and R. so, i think it's worth it to play him mid. But it will be very hard with some matchups.

Robbit Mang1 votes

Definitely. AP ezreal is countered by every assassin and your fights vs most mages require you to outplay them, meaning AP ezreal is Very hard to play. He's got AMAZING lategame, the problem is that getting all of your items is quite difficult considering how bad ezreals range is compared to other mages (on w, q is decent range but w is more than half his damage output), and his lack of CC on his spells without rylais. If you can get to lategame AP ezreal destroys in team fights and can probably win games and make comebacks by himself. Still a situational pick I'm afraid, as most assassins will kill him enough to delay his lategame so much, when ap ezreal is behind he's useless so you lose

That's exactly why i said it will be very hard to succeed with him given the wide variety of bad matchups for him. Zed, Yasuo, Talon, Akali, Ahri, many more. AP ezreal is very hard to play to full potential but if you manage to pull it off, he has amazing damage output. Also, i am always confused in terms of builds with this guy. I always build 3 items that i never swap out, Luden's, Deathcap and lich Bane but for the rest of the build, there are so many options. Like, if you can go late game, if you get to stack fully your Seraph's and a rod of Ages combined with the other 3 items you get a ridiculous amount of AP but you don't really have any sustain like spellvamp and you will also lack the magic pen of void, so, what do you see as a better solution, to swap out RoA or Seraph's for void staff? It is hard to play AP ezreal effectively but if you play late scaling items and build like this item 3100 , item 3285 , item 3020 , item 3089 , item 3135 item 3040 or item 3029 you will have insane power late in the game. But it is very hard indeed to succeed with him.

It's not realy about the mana, it's about the late stats. 120 AP with RoA, 140+ with Seraphs and with 120 with Rabbadon's. And with the mana you are spam happy!!! a lot of power there.

replace the seraphs with morello, and the ludens with void. You sacrifice a lot of poke from ludens for effective damage on tanks. well you gotta realize, void staff works on EVERYONE, squishies you shave off maybe 10-20 MR, tanks youll shave off upwards of 70-80 MR. If you mean "pls rework Void Staff the way you reworked Last Whisper so it's an actual anti-tank item instead of a 'murder everyone' item", then I agree. It could build into a tweaked Liandry's that is more focused on melting tanks and a redesigned Morellonomicon where the GW was an actual reason you went for it instead of "ball of stats that randomly has GW".

Although that raises the question of whether there should be good flat magic pen items as an alternative to the VS items, for people who just want to blow up squishies with magic burst damage, or whether they should just build more straight AP and "extra ratio" items like Luden's or Lichbane. Maybe Haunting Guise should get a different upgrade (since a flat magic pen item building into an anti-tank item doesn't really work in the first place).

It kind of looks like fixing VS's "too good at everything" problem would require an AP item redesign as big as, or even bigger than, last season's, just to give flat pen and %pen more different strengths and uses. Too bad they didn't tackle it then.

zecastar1 votes

The difference is that ADCs do sustained damage while most mages are burst oriented. If you rework VS the same way, you can negate their entire kit with a bit of MR. Mages would simply not have the necessary influence to feel satisfying mid-late game and tanks would be unbearable.

No, i did not mean this. What i said was pretty straightforward. Bring the old last whisper back. The thing is they reworked last whisper because of the ADC rework but that hurt assassins as well. Sorry but, with all those base stats late game and no % total armor pen you can't do your job as an AD assassin as effectively. What is your job? Blow up squishies and do over all good damage even to beefy but not kill blow them up. Thing is, now, late game, you can't blow up even a squishy with no % total armor pen. Ok, you have black cleaver but it's not good enough, cleaver needs stacking and that counter productive for an assassin who needs immediate access to his burst. Black cleaver is a bruiser item, not an assassin item. At least give an item that has the same % pen that the cleaver has in shred which is 30%. With the flat pen from current items, masteries and with 30% total pen, you are effective enough to blow up squishies and at the same time, you do not have enough % total pen to burst down tanks. They could do that with the new assassin item and make it melee only so that ADCs can't buy it. Seriously, it's far better for assassin in late game. Also, there is a distinct difference between armor and mr. Most champions have 30 flat mr that does not scale with level and others scale from 30 to 54 at level 18. So, with sorc boots, mpen in runes and masteries and void staff, you do true damage to everyone who didn't get an mr item while with armor, all champions scale from about 20 to 94 at lvl 18 with most common bas armor being around 80 and if you add runes to that you easily get a figure around 100. this is a lot more than 30 or 54 isn't it? So, with just this low flat armor pen and no % armor pen, how are you gonna assassinate??? You won't if your target knows what to do and if a support is always around. They must make an item with % total armor pen for assassins only. Black cleaver is not for assassins, it's for bruisers and tanks.

I mean, I'm an Ezreal main who's tried everything that could possibly synergize with Ezreal, and I hate to say it, but I think he's in a balanced position right now, being extremely situational as a poke-oriented adc and a burst mage with high counter potential mid. Regardless, he doesn't need synergy with every item. Essence Reaver isn't good on him, which is why it's oriented for other caster adcs that DO have mana problems. If I play well with an early Doran's on Ezreal, I still have mana until level 14-15 as an adc. Less if I'm mid, but still.

When the new essence reaver came out, and trinity force I was a bit apprehensive to try it as my favorite build used to be the blue build, and trinity essence is a lot more auto attack focused than blue build. I found that ezreal with TF, IE, Bloodthirstier, IE, RFC/PD or a defensive item is INSANE lategame. The only thing is that you have to time your Q's to not slow down your autos and ALWAYS stack up your passive before fighting. With one attack speed item and your passive stacked up, you have the same or more AS than any other ad carry, meanwhile not having to build AS and being able to get life steal or defense instead. I LOVE the new patch

That's the standard build now and he has one of the worst winrates in the game past 35 minutes. He might be better than before if you get peel but he's definitely still pretty weak at that point. Check champion.gg and leagueofgraphs.com.

That's not really an accurate statistic, as that graph includes blue build and other builds that do fall off lategame.

The build I listed is actually on champion.gg with a 51.6% winrate lol. Pretty extraordinary considering that ezreals play rate almost tripled when the patch came out, meaning a lot of new inexperienced played probably tried the build with above average success

Lately with the preseason I've not really been building much crit on Ez, despite its strength and ease of access. I've noticed that blue build, while being one of my favorites feels weaker at most points in the game, as the delayed power spike makes you weaker earlier, and by the time you have it stacked the enemy team often has enough armor to nullify your damage, I think getting early arpen and AD on him is necessary if you plan on taking a non crit-centric build, rushing Youmuu's even seems pretty nice, as it gives all that and then some.

Human error should take care of it. Instead of hammering Q like a riven wait for it to come off cooldown then press the button.

Or make Spellblades scale with CDR, hint hint I mean half the champs that abuse spellblades don't hit that fast anyways.
