Jayce is what happens when champs who should be mana-gated suddenly aren't anymore

Can you imagine if you suddenly made it so Jax or Irelia didn't need to get mana at all and could start long sword instead of corrupting pot

Or if you made it so Mages didn't need to get mana/manaregen and just buy raw damage

Because that's what Riot did to Jayce by letting him skip tear

whoah man, that's going too far.

Let's also let him break the CDR cap and hit 90%.

Let's make him dodge turret shots! Let's make him have extra Ad for buying ad! Let's make him break the AtkSpd cap and make 5.0 AtkSpd his limit!

Can't believe all of what I said happend in League.

But not all on the same champion :V

But it all happened in league at one point

It's a good meme, but it's not all bad. Unique mechanics such as those just haven't been balanced appropriately or whatever, although we shouldn't discourage Rito from experimenting at all. And some of those mechanics work if they're an appropriate balancing lever (like Zed's W passive).

Although, it's like Jurassic Park. Sometimes you shouldn't do something just because you can :V

That's true. Riot was thinking of a Thresh ultimate that gives 80%cdr to an ally. Also it was 80%CDR added ontop of the allies CDR so it'd give the ally NO COOLDOWNS.

Like holy hell broken. Luckily Riot didn't let CertainlyT slip that in lol.

screw that, let Thresh loose with a Karthus and get 2 ults out of that! :D

I don't think CertainlyT wanted to ship that. He tested it, but I don't think other Rioters needed to stop him from shipping it live...

this post is as dumb as the arrow pointing to your own title lmao. nobody "should" be "mana-gated". nobodies "letting" jayce skip tear. item builds are peoples choices, as are the champions they play. you dont just look at something and think immediately "well the pros arent building manamune on jayce, therefore hes broken". these kinds of assumptions are so close-minded and they show how much you cant think for yourself if the only thing you can back your argument up with is the assumption that the pros are playing it and they're magical gods compared to everyone with anything to do with league of legends and that none of their decisions are wrong and we must all learn to copy them before we can come close to being anywhere near as good. literally your post shows absolutely nothing to back up your claims besides what ive said so why should anyone take you seriously if all you can do is point at the pros and make them take all the blame and force them to backup their reasoning.

What did Riot do that suddenly made Jayce not gated by mana?

Melee E cost was reduced from 40>50>60>70>80>90 to 40 mana at all ranks

Actually, most Jayce players do not max E until late game. I suppose that this could had an impact on his late game, allowing him to rely less on Tear to not go OOM late. However, he could always go without Tear for a better early game. It is important to remember that his Q mana costs were reduced - not on this patch, but on patch 6.6

But for real, the reason why Jayce is popular now is the bug fix and the change to his hammer stance bonus damage from AP to bonus AD (it is still magic damage, though)

You can still get Tear if you want to go with a build focused on spamming Q late game. However, because of Jayce's early game power, most players are skipping Tear and going directly for Ghostblade to better take advantage of that.

Punching Top2 votes

Wait, isn't maxing Q-E better than maxing Q-W ? (Serious question, I have no experience with jayce)

Jinzo Torrance11 votes

Depends, Q>E vs tanks or bruiser, Q>W squishy (Rumble, Lulu, Kennen). But W is generally better for the mana gain on attack, faster pushing thanks to the AoE damage and increased DPS.

ChaoticPinecone2 votes

Short answer, no.

Long answer: Jayce used get the cooldown on his Acceleration Gate down to 10 seconds a long time ago (40% CDR meant that your Q+E combo was up every 6 seconds). It got nerfed to a flat 16 at all ranks. Since then, Ive found that Maxing W second is the best. When he used to have a 10 second Acceleration Gate, it was nice for spamming the Shock Blast+Acceleration Gate combo for poking them down, then going all-in with the higher damage of the To The Skies + Thundering Blow combo. With the increased cooldown on the Accleration Gate, you just arent going to have as many opportunities for poking them down with the Shock Blast + Acceleration Gate. You rely on your W's 3 quick shots as part of your "poke" before you all-in them.

But of course, this is in general in an even lane. If the enemy is armor stacking or health stacking, E might be better - your poke and auto harass isnt going to do much if the enemy rushes Thornmail. E is also definitely better in matchups where you cant get much autoattack harass off, since it gives you a higher all-in.

TL;DR - W is better if youre actually autoattacking.

You can still get Tear if you want to go with a build focused on spamming Q to poke enemies until they are low or until they die. However, most players are going for the lane bully style, still maxing Q but focusing more on his hammer stance. For that playstyle, skipping Tear is better.

Well his W passive on his hammer stance does give back mana on auto attack. It's not like all of his builds were that reliant on tear. And in another sense, skipping tear makes him more mana gated, cause you have fewer spells to work with before you have to return to fountain. (And if you take him mid lane, you can pretty much rely on Blue buff.

The problem in balancing Jayce comes from his duel form. It gives him a variety styles of play, each of which use different builds. And right now, he's moving from a high capacity AD Siege, to a burst caster/skirmisher. Which means he can trade his mana battery for a little more bursting power. (and that is some how a problem?)

Though if Riot had to pick a direction for Jayce, it would likely be one where both stances work in unison. That wouldn't like be the AD siege build. (nor the Bruiser build that I prefer) But that scrappier skirmisher rout. Of coarse, that will be up in the air come preseason, as those armor pen items are getting looked at.

make Sion manaless and give him a gun like jayce as well.

Ralanr1 votes

A gun? All he needs is a axe big enough to do Q's the size of the lane in 2 seconds.

Tots fair bro.

ThatHaleState7 votes

They lowered 1 abilites mana cost.... his E went from 40/50/60/70/80/90 to 40 at all ranks..... If Jayce wants to spam he still needs tear. The Pros play jayce now because Poke is in season and they know how to manage their mana pools.

Vallalan2 votes

50 mana is huge.

Auz the Ripper14 votes

But it's on a skill that is traditionally maxed last and generally not used too often

wiggywonka7 votes

jayce is fine just cuz the pros play him doesnt mean hes op. ive seen countless times in worlds where the jayce goes oom and cant do anything in a fight. Also most jayces we've seen so far just feeds lane and doesnt do anything

Vallalan2 votes

he is definitely too strong right now. no one is flat out graves rework level busted, but lets be real. jayce, syndra, nidalee, cassio are too good.

wiggywonka6 votes

nobody was saying syndra and jayce were strong before worlds.

Vallalan3 votes

nobody was playing them until they realized they were too strong. who cares if it took world to make people realize they are op. they are none the less op.

The Deckowner7 votes

jax and irelia are bad examples, maybe use varus xerath ziggs ezreal as examples.

Irelia Bot3 votes

Well then let us look at lux and Ahri who still have some mana limits.

Say that Lux E and Ahri Q had a mana cost of 20/25/30/35/40

They would be able to stay in lane spamming abilities for as long as they need to to get a no trade off back.

What if we did this for Ryze, Cassiopeia, and Ezreal? Some of the most mana hungry champs in this game. I don't think it would break them. Ezreal and Cass still have to land their skillshots, or they can't do sh*t. Ryze would just hit his power spike a little bit earlier.

They all have less than a 50% win rate. This would be a much needed buff for them. And even with the changes, Jayce only has a 50% win rate. He is in a healthy spot.

Jayce, who most people agree has a hig skill cap due to him having to combo his abilities well, knowing when to use what combos, when to go in melee, etc. is popular yet still has a 50% Winrate.

Ralanr3 votes

Oh shit. Above 8% playrate and 51% winrate?

Is this a joke? Cass would rush Rylai's, press E on a champ, land a Q for free since you're slowed by 40%, them mash E over and over again with inpunity because the only thing keeping her from doing that at all times is that it's pretty taxing on her mana pool to spam E without getting the mana restore. Ezreal would be tossing out Qs on a constant basis and would be absolutely impossible to lane against a remotely competent one because of the combination of poke and safety without the fear of going OOM.

As a Jax main for 3 seasons I can tell you Jax is hardly a mana hungry champion. I also never start corruption potion, and if I do it's not for the mana. It's for health/dot damage. I always Doran Blade on Jax. Long live #Hashinshin
