He did state in the live stream that he disliked doing reworks due to the constraints leveled upon him to keep true to the original and that he'd try to stick to new creations from now on. It sounds to me like they bottlenecked his designing quite hard for Warwick.

Ralanr4 votes

That makes sense. I can imagine him disliking the Mordekaiser update because he had a much more limited set of tools with it. I hoped a VGU would give him more freedom, but apparently not enough.

When a rioter works on a champ no one can do anything he has 100% power on it And to be fair " he disliked doing reworks due to the constraints leveled upon him to keep true to the original" at least he keeps the original

not like repertoir or stashu Cassiopeia went from a dot mage to machine gun Malzahar nuf said Shen Talon nuf said Skarner "skarner should be an objective jungler" lol

But even every single one of those champs retains aspects of the original incarnations, some of their skills remaining relatively unchanged. Having to preserve certain kit aspects while also trying to maintain some kind of resemblance to the original is indeed a constraint that a designer has to work within, and is not the same kind of rampant freedom someone has when completely creating a new champ from the ground up.

EmollientNut03 votes

Shen is at best a shell of his former self. And that's 100% intentional from Riot, every time Worlds comes around they just nerf him again.

new shen is a way better design than the old version hough lol what is this shit

They tried to do a rework with an emphasis on community feedback and input every step of the way and it failed. It's pretty unfortunate. Now rito keeps mostly quiet until the rework is ready to go live

I can agree with most of your stuff but

Why talon? There's a legit reason to picking him over zed now other than "He's better" or "Zed has a shitty laneing pahse now"

Ahristocats5 votes

talon niche was AOE damage, this 100%

i used to main talon in 2011 before his first nerf that ruined his AOE damage in 2013, i was an otp talon What you expected from talon is jumping in teamfight and doing massive aoe damage while killling your target

and for some reasons, stashu said that an assassin with AOE damage is unhealthy, GO WONDER WHY and instead he said that talon niche should be "roaming because he buys mobility boots" and i was out of the entire community the only one who was seeing straight up political man bullshit speach because zed/fizz also used to buy mobility boots

GULAG 4 U4 votes

2011 was a loooong time ago. And I don't think aoe assassins are unhealthy, I think they are actually a good thing. Assassins have always been sort of crap because their entire niche relied on taking down someone with more value than them which creates an unhealthy gameplay, but with aoe assassins and cleanupers such as khazix and talon, their niche is no longer just killing one thing and be useless, but they have actual reasons for picking. This is one of the reasons why I think khazix is the healthier assassin in the game.

See, when I think of an AoE Assassin, I think Katarina more than I do Talon.

That might just be from seeing Kat more often than Talon, though.

Ultîma2 votes

Not even a Talon main, but Katarina's niche has always been her resets and clean-up potential. Talon was the go-to AoE nuke assassin. For some reason Riot decided that Kat got both of these strengths, while Talon retained none.

He needs to be able to ult without E breaking him out of stealth to solidify his new identity as the ganking assassin. Until then he'll be bad even at that.

But that would be broken.

Why do people want hi,m to be a discount Rengar instead of Talon?

ShadowParker1 votes

Whenever I thought of Talon, I always thought of his lack for counterplay.

Not so much aoe. I feel like he does have a pretty solid niche as the parkour assassin. Aoe assassin always felt like Kat to me.

Zerenza3 votes

The premiere AOE assassin is Katarina, Talon's niche was his roaming which was stronger than most assassins. katarina has the power to team fight and always has but talon can't, his kit doesn't allow him to, all he can do is burst a single squishy target and maybe get a second if he's fed/lucky. But katarina was always built to kill one person and then keep on going, making her better for teamfighting than talon.

EROTIC RAID BOSS2 votes

youre also the only one in the world who didn't realize talon's aoe damage and old gameplay was stupid af and needed to die. his new niche is a lot better, and katarina is the obvious choice to be the aoe assassin anyway? new talon is a significant improvement, as is every other champ you whined about in your post

Actually, Talon changes were meant to put emphasis on the champions need to both roam and flank. Most of the time as Talon you needed to come from weird and unexpected angles to get the the backline since his straight mobility was actually weak.

All he really had was his E and it is also his main engage tool and gapcloser, so flanking was basically mandatory if you wanted to get the the backline at all and changing your approach was a must to do so consistently.

This is what the rework was aiming to emphasis and it only made this play style Talon was dependent on to be consistently successful to any degree that more pronounced.

Talon still has good AOE damage. it just requires you be a bot more deliberate now.

Talon can still obliterate 2-3 squishy backliners by himself if he sets up correctly, as with his Ulty, W and Q he can get his passive stacked on the entire enemy team, let alone the back line. It wasn't that Assassins with AOE were unhealthy so much as Talon's assassination pattern was more collateral than deliberate.

Getting that passive damage off is more the question of his total AoE now than "whether he was within range of other people when he jumped the backline", which is unfortunate but not unsalvageable or a total wash.

The main reason they made Talon less directly have that emphasis on AOE is to make it more katarina's niche than his.

Not completely ruined or bad necessarily, but his kit sucks in the "fun" aspect now. Getting enemy side towers feels pointless, just free 15 gold for you and the enemy. Very limited. Pls give skarner another Shyvana sized rework....

Granted this is from the outside looking in, but it seems Riot has an extraordinarily bureaucratic content creation process. I have no doubt in my mind there were at least 3 passives that got removed from the kit. In fact if you listen to Riot's designers on their talk show/stream/whatever they are always talking about some ludicrous feature that got cut in champion development.

Repertoir did a good job though. Cassiopeia was never just a DoT mage, she was that and a machine gun. The current rework manages to keep both and that makes it a success imo.

Talon's rework was amazing and perfect tho. He was a niche champion and he still is a niche champion played only by his small cult of dedicated players.

warpenguin5551 votes

Well it looks like that's what's need for him to deliver good content. I really hope he sticks with VGU's, Warwick looks great

BastionKross3 votes

I agree. CerainlyT had a lot of restraints on him for this rework, so he couldn't pull a lot of his bullshit mechanics and overloaded kit ideas. Then again, since WW hasn't hit the live servers yet, we don't know if the werewolf is toxic or not. (Could be like Cait, stealth toxic for months until someone discovers how disgusting it can be if played correctly)

So while I'm undecided about the WW rework until it's had some time on live, I am definitely not willing to make a saint out of a sinner when it comes to CertainlyT. He's got a long path to forgiveness, and this might be the first step.

MagikarpIsBoss1 votes

I mean he can ult from an entire screen away in a lot of cases and he gets so many free stats if enemies are low, but other than these 2 things I think new ww will be fine. He can now gank pre 6 due to the q change, so I feel he can actually be playable without being too strong.

ChaddyFantome1 votes

Thing is, WW already got a bunch of free stats when people wee low.

This CT being loyal and true to Big Bad Double W moreso than him actually going overboard.

DwarvenGiant1 votes

He didn't say that he dislikes it, but rather that one is given much more freedom when creating a completely new champion, due to players having much less expectations, and therefore, as you said, there are also much less constraints (in comparison to a champion update); He basically said that it was a different kind of challenge.

######He did say that he doesn't think that ChampUP is the best environment for him (because the innovative nature he's known for in his designs), but that was many months ago, when he had just started working on Warwick.

Anyways, I'm pretty sure that he's staying on ChampUP's Team A for VGUs (at least for now), with Urgot being their next project. But I'm not entirely sure on that one.

Golden Tager X4 votes

Lets see, great sustain, 2 gapclosers, lots of damage, insane movespeed and attack speed buff, special form of vision, 2 forms of cc, percent damage reduction. Somehow I feel like when this hits live and people have his kit figured out, people's opinions will change on this not being overloaded.

Ahristocats18 votes

armor debuff, mr debuff, ranged strong slow+nuke, heal on allies, bonus movement speed, a spell increasing range and allowing bonus damage, giving AOE damage on AA, ulti that makes invulnerable

Kayle overloaded confirmed

you can make sound anything overloaded friend, the way to know if a champ is overloaded is by knowing every different thing the champ can do.

ekko for instance was able to do tank+skirmish+burst a target+bring utility like an AOE stun+slow on passive, while having map pressence due to dash on his E+strong base ms

Golden Tager X2 votes

You used as many words as possible to describe everything Kayle's kit brings, I used as few words possible to describe what new WW has, yet the word count is the same. I can use some seriously flamboyant words too if I want to try and do what you did, but I didn't. I literally gave you what he has to offer in as few words as possible and it STILL seemed like alot, try that with Kayle.

morris16 votes

I don't wanna be "that guy" but Kayle has been sleeper OP for plenty of patches now.

MrWasjig1 votes

Maybe so but she was picked just for the sake of example, and to shut down the argument of just listing stuff on a champion's kit can make anyone sound OP.

MagikarpIsBoss1 votes

And I always thought Kayle's kit was so boring and linear. As this guy said, literally any champion can sound overloaded and OP by just listing off somethings they can do.

Dracocrash4 votes

Lets not pass judgment on the warwick rework YET.

Everyone fucking loved the talon rework on PBE. and hated the skarner rework (during juggernaut rework time).

But when they both came to live, boi were there unhappy people.

Mordepool3 votes

He has done good work in the past he is also responsible for the worst Rework in League history. Thus far I believe as a Mordekaiser Main. CertainlyT has been a net positive for the game as a Whole even if my personal impact has been almost entirely Negative

Ahristocats6 votes

honestly i feel bad for him with morde due to the xp passive

he wanted morde to be viable bot lane but release morde bot lane was already viable without the xp passive Xp passive just broke morde if he did a bot lane champ without the xp passive morde today would be like darius, just played bot lane

BastionKross3 votes

The XP passive was vital to the vision CerT had of the rework. He wanted a melee champ that could function bot lane, but when tried that the first time Yasuo that melee champ with the overloaded kit simply went mid and top instead; because why engage in a lane with two people poking the hell out of you when you could go to a lane where there's only one?

The XP passive (and the W only working when there's an ally champion nearby) was intended to chain Morde to bot lane so that he could only work there. CerT was successful, in that Morde slapped the shit out of everyone in bot lane and was useless everywhere else. The balance team quickly nerfed him down to trash level, and he languished there for months. Then, they allowed Morde's W to work on minions (and then solo, to a certain extent) so that he could solo lane again, and he's in the same space he is today: very underwhelming no matter where you play him.

If CerT had not included the XP passive, Morde would have went straight to a solo lane and stayed there like Yasuo.
