Because why not?

I mean actually, why not if it works?

League is a team game and if anything solo q actually works against how league is supposed to function, imho.

Because you have team ranked for it. Solo queue is team based also, so it is not against "how league is supposed to work". If you can't work as a team with random people, you don't deserve to rank up on your SOLO ELO.

But by that same token your Solo Elo is so dependent on your teammates' performance as well as your own. Yes they're random, but one person getting paired with better teammates than someone else can increase their solo elo as much if not more than your individual skill. A person can be perfectly capable of working with everyone, but that feeling has to be mutual for it to work. In other words, I'd personally say solo elo is horribly warped by how lucky/unlucky on is with their matchmade teammates, with their individual skill simply being a possible limiting factor.

I've already seen this gripe before. Ranked teams and premades are entirely different things. A ranked team at most can have nine members. The composition of a ranked team is not very flexible and people usually have lives outside of league that impact availability. A premade is any number of random friends (often less than five) that happen to be on at the time you decide to play a game. It's not a ranked team. In many cases, it's not even people that regularly play with each other. Sure, it's an advantage over playing with complete strangers, but I doubt the change will "break" solo queue.

How not? This change will DESTROY high elo play. Master and Challenger will be unplayable to people who only played solo before. And silver and bronze will queue up with their bad friends who will feed eventually, and they will stay low in elo. This changes will mean nothing to low elo and fuck up high elo

Destroy and change are different things. There will be added incentive to add friends hovering at your ELO to level the playing field. Duo queue already is present in current ranked, which I can only imagine most high ELO players try to utilize for the communication advantage.

Your statement about Solo Queue becoming Ranked Teams is invalid. They will still be different entities, though more similar than before.

I believe the reason Riot decided to go this route, is because they understand how important communication is in this team based game but cannot realistically implement a client based voice chat. They don't want the responsibility of handling effortless toxicity enabled by voice chat.
