Exhaust Vs Ignite

I've been really starting to see some supports pick up ignite (I'm assuming for the kill potential in lane) instead of grabbing exhaust. I've really been wondering, why do people do this? Does ignite really outclass exhaust now? I just always preferred exhaust because it seems more logical for a support, especially if you're not cc heavy, to protect your team against just about anything. But nothing is more obnoxious than the enemy support igniting you securing that kill with the last tick or 2.

So what's your stand? Do you grab exhaust or ignite on supports? And if you don't play support would you rather your support grab exhaust or ignite?

think of it like this, is ignite really going to help that much in a team fight? It does as much as one more spell, thats cool, but ex stops an adc or mid in their tracks making it so they hit like a wet noodle allowing your team to do max damage while they can only do half, since one of their two carries are nothing.

I just get heal instead. I'd rather take something that helps my lane stay there more concretely rather than a 2.5 seconds cripple spell that may turn out useless, or close enough.

pointless if both you and your adc have heal.

Not quite. If you don't both use them at the same time you can still get the full benefit from both, which really isn't hard to do. Also, on champs responsible for health sustain, it alleviates the problem, often leading to more mana for offense. It's helped me win many lanes, no doubt about that.

Exhaust and ignite both have their uses, both for mid and support.

Exhaust has more utility in general, and is more useful in teamfights as both a defensive (can basically halve someone's damage) and offensive (slows them down and lowers defenses, not great against tanks but deadly to squishies who didn't build defense) tool. Ignite is useful to counter healing (especially Soraka, but after she ults. Or Swain. Or Vladmir) and to secure a kill.

Honestly, I prefer exhaust. I'd rather have the ability to protect my team and easily secure a kill as a team rather than have an extra bit of true damage to secure a kill without protecting my team in the slightest.

Even if I was mid.

Exhaust is much better on a support IMO, the massive reduction in damage and mobility it offers can often swing a trade in your favor early-game or at least turn a loosing fight into a stalemate. Exhaust is also kind of broken against assassins mid/late game, as it will usually turn a solid dive+blow up carry+escape plan into them being slain in middle of your team without accomplishing much of anything.

Ignite is more something you'd get in a kill lane to move your 100%-->10% burst to a 100%-->0% burst. Or picked by a player that doesn't really get support is the lowest income roll and that position is more about playing smarter rather than harder, winning the game for their team through every path that doesn't have the direct aim of killing.

exhaust lategame, ignite for early kills

I will get ignite if I'm against Nami/Soraka/Sona, (1) because they all heal of course, but also (2) they are all VERY easy to kill. I don't know why you wouldn't dive in early levels to catch them.

Exhaust is for a team with an assassin or AD caster. It has far more uses and I prefer it. But nothing is worse than going against a team with a lot of healing and expecting someone else to ignite them.

Ignite is only really picked up on supports who want to force fights and get kills early game. Leona Blitzcrank Thresh

While exhaust is usually taken on pure defensive supports who want to peel for their AD carry late gameBraum Janna Alistar

Basically, take ignite if your a lane bully support who wants to go for kills. Exhaust is the better choice if your a defensive, peeling support in team fights.
