It's not, but what players do with that information does differ.

Knowing how long your teammate is going to take to LOAD IN is useful information. Seeing it tick from 60% to 70% lets you visually know if your game has crashed/frozen or if they're just not loading.

Seeing if one of your teammates has high ping and singling them out for abuse is not useful.

Loading time isn't even bound in any significant way by ping. If you have 200 ping it will take you 100 milliseconds longer than someone with 0 ping on the same PC as you, the time it takes for data to reach the server from your PC.

Load time has nothing to do with ping, only really the strength of your PC. It's impossible to determine that someone's playing from another country by the amount of time it takes them to load, where as you can work this out with ping.

It also gives more incentive for people to play more, gives a good season objective (Gold+ for skin), and helps players easily get some idea of how skilled the people they are playing with are (there is at least some difference between Gold I and Bronze V).

Without ranked, I'd probably have gotten bored of this game a long while ago. It would be kinda like Super Smash games, really fun every so often, but repetitive after a bit. The ranking gets my competitive nature going and makes me play more (and I like free skins).

Yeah. I like to call upon the times people were downright convinced Marauder and Firebat were the most OP heroes. I think people would shit an actual brick if they got hit by something like Dark Zealot, too. It was a different game with a different meta, but it had some valuable lessons. And yeah, String was good at everything though, I'm pretty sure he won everything. I mostly miss the beach map. I quit around the time the new dudes came out, the Broodling, Carrier? and... whatever Terran got.

As you can see, ping was removed for a good reason. You can now ping your ping (hah!) anyway, and I've literally never been in a case where people don't accept it as an answer. At least thus far.

Riot has to handle their playerbase very carefully because a lot of small things can blow up in big ways. It's like why we don't have voice chat-- it's one more thing for players to use. "You weren't listening to my voice chat? Wtf not?"
