Why do people say mages feel bad to play?

Season 6 gutted the hell out of mages, from every single angle. Which is why everybody is looking forward to the upcoming mage update.

The new Masteries are pretty awful for mages. No longer getting that flat 6ap. Everybody is forced to use Thunderlords cause Deathfire is only effective on like 2 champions, and scales with more with ad.

Magic Resist is way too easy and effective to build for every class. Mages are now 110% fucked by tanks.

After buffing Juggernauts and ADCs riot decided to dramatically increase the price of all ap items, AND nerf the ap those items gave.

Mages got rekt this season.

as an ori main, i WAS looking forward to the mage update... until i saw them remove mana regen as a stat from summoner's rift, ruin grail, nerf roa, and lower the single-combo burst ratios of every other immobile mage they passed over. if that's going to be the new baseline, is it really an expectation that they'll revert the changes when they feel weaker than those of champions like mine; rather than just nerfing me down to that level in response? brand used to be THE combo mage. I don't know if he can even clear a wave with his q-e-w mid game anymore. All i'm left with to read of Riot's intentions is that they don't think midlane safe pushers should be in the game anymore, and clearing waves and wraiths with abilities is toxic, and they're going to put an end to it.

add to this issue the fact that zhonyas has been nerfed - again - and none of the new AP items are useful for champions like ori who already have built in slows, and it's like, why don't you just gut the champion and get it over with now zed can ult and kill me even if i buy zhonyas and i can't even safe push anymore, because you deleted mana regen

Welp. Looks like people will be running mana regen glyphs instead of magic resist or cooldown reduction.

as an ori main, i WAS looking forward to the mage update... until i saw them remove mana regen as a stat from summoner's rift,

Which isn't a big deal with the new Mana items we are getting. Trust me, ive used them on PBE.

ruin grail,

Oh please, Supports were the champs primarily getting it anyway. Everyone else was getting Abysal Scepter and Morellonomicon.

nerf roa,

This part is just straight up false, it is getting a straight buff.

and lower the single-combo burst ratios of every other immobile mage they passed over.

By "every mage" you mean Annie? (who deserved it for being BS) because Zyra, Brand, Velkoz, Vladimir, Veigar, Malzahar, Swain, are ALL much more threatening now.

Brand is a fucking chain reaction of death waiting to happen in particular and Malzahar is soloing Baron at 20.

if that's going to be the new baseline, is it really an expectation that they'll revert the changes when they feel weaker than those of champions like mine; rather than just nerfing me down to that level in response? brand used to be THE combo mage.

Rofl. The only combos brand used was E>Q. Now he actually has a reason to use his E last outside of waveclear, which his W already did just fine. He and Zyra are also good junglers, rofl.

I don't know if he can even clear a wave with his q-e-w mid game anymore. All i'm left with to read of Riot's intentions is that they don't think midlane safe pushers should be in the game anymore, and clearing waves and wraiths with abilities is toxic, and they're going to put an end to it.

No, what they are saying is invalidating ones mana bar is pointless and makes its existence redundant, especially with the amount of limitless seiging power and wave clear it gives them.

With this general tweak in mind, they can properly balance mages as mana users properly.

add to this issue the fact that zhonyas has been nerfed - again -

Which is totally justified.

and none of the new AP items are useful for champions like ori who already have built in slows, and it's like, why don't you just gut the champion and get it over with

Both the new Hextech Gunblade and Hexteck Frost Shooter thing are great additions on Ori, hell the Rocket pack is good on anyone.

And There is nothing wrong with more slows as long as you aren't overlapping them for no reason. There is a reason why Rylais is semi popular on her.

now zed can ult and kill me even if i buy zhonyas and i can't even safe push anymore, because you deleted mana regen

As Ori, you dont need Zhonyas to beat Zed, all you need is summoner 3 and your ulti. What you can't do is just use Zhonya's active whenever it is off cooldown for no good reason like pointlessly delaying your inevitable death, because now careless use of it will have consequence. Also, the new tear cuts mana costs by 15 flipppin % and the new Morrelo regens your mana by like 50% every level up.

Lastly, Ancient Golem Buff exists. You will have plenty of mana.

Stop being a doom saying drama queen.

very solid rebuttal. I will point out, however, that much of this - like my post - is opinion i don't think the zhonyas nerf was justified. Zhonyas already had a relatively long cooldown - long enough for someone who used it like an idiot every time someone said 'boo' to regret it the next time they got jumped. Forcing someone to blow it was already a big deal - but now it ruins you for two whole minutes.

If you're going to claim that blue buff will solve all of the mana issues, i'll point out two things

  1. it doesn't last as long as it used to anymore.
  2. in solo queue relying on the chance that you may have blue buff is ridiculous. Many junglers won't want to give you blue buff, and if you're a champ who RELIES on blue buff the enemy team will almost certainly be there to contest it.

Also, you may be playing at a different level than me, so my experience may be different than yours, but in my experience, grail was being bought a lot in the mid lane - specifically on mana using champions who spammed abilities, such as ziggs, but who don't want to be utterly useless before their tear gets stacked. the fact of the matter is that there were only two items in the game that 'invalidated' your mana bar, and those were seraphs (which takes forever to stack on most champs) and grail (which has very little AP to compensate). Going oom during sieges or teamfights isn't an option that a mana user with poke can swallow, so basically, you HAVE to build seraphs now. You are going to be seeing this item every single game someone picks a mage, i can guarantee it.

Brand's teamfight presence is definitely terrifying now. However, that doesn't invalidate the point i was trying to bring up, which is that his single combo burst is significantly lower now. Also, your claim that he only ever used e-q-w is ridiculous. Yes, that's his best trade combo, but all of his combos were situationally useful. Oftentimes, you would W a wave, wait a couple seconds for your W's cooldown to reduce and for your opponent to approach the wave, then you'd E a minion near your opponent, Q your now exposed lane opponent, auto, and W them when it came back up. Other times, you would Q the siege minion, E, and then W the wave to clear it. Or you'd W your opponent, Q them, and then E them and W again when it came back up.

No self respecting orianna would ever, EVER be caught dead buying gunblade. ever. for perspective, will of the ancients did orianna every bit as much good as current gunblade does her, except that it's less expensive and doesn't provide 40 useless* AD. And she didn't buy that, so why would she buy gunblade? As for the frost shot one, she would never buy that. Her slow is up often enough that it simply wouldn't see use except as a part of her burst combo, which is already pretty potent. I can only imagine the item being bought either on supports or on champions that want a slow, but don't get one. I main ori and i never bought rylai's on her. I haven't seen other people buying it on her, either, but i imagine that if they did, it was more because it's a 100 AP item that also gives a bunch of health rather than for the slow - which she doesn't need. For my opinion on protobelt (which is different than your opinion, but sees some use from it) see one of my other posts below.

Finally i'm going to close my eyes for your sake and pretend i didn't see you claiming that ROA just got "buffed" in what world does a nerf to most of its stats and the removal of its per level regen constitute anything besides a merciless gutting on anyone other than, say, maokai or nautilus? look the item isn't getting bought on anyone who isn't a tank after this and that's the end of it

Oh please, Supports were the champs primarily getting it anyway. Everyone else was getting Abysal Scepter and Morellonomicon.

by everyone, do you mean all of the AP assassins? because last time i checked, that build was core on leblanc and ahri; but not on ziggs, vel'koz, orianna, brand, mid zyra, lux, and xerath, all of whom - last time i checked - still prefer grail.

*the 40 AD is 'useless' on AP ori if she didn't buy nashors and get one or two defensive items - something a self respecting midlaner like me would only try in a norm, #trust. However, Gunblade is one of my favorite items on AP ezreal, among other champions.

Sorry sir/mam but I am not here for copouts. I am here for discussion. Pointing this out comes of more like a way7 to try and diminish the the grounds of my point withotu countering it. I'll take this part as a big "k".

i don't think the zhonyas nerf was justified. Zhonyas already had a relatively long cooldown - long enough for someone who used it like an idiot every time someone said 'boo' to regret it the next time they got jumped. Forcing someone to blow it was already a big deal - but now it ruins you for two whole minutes.

1 minute 30 seconds is not a long CD. 1 minute is the time it takes you to get to lane for crying out loud. Currently, Zhonya's is up virtually all the time you plan to use even think of using it. But that isn't even the issue. On top of this, it specs way to well in pure offense and defense simultaneously for an item that is supposed to be a defensive buy. The active alone is easily the most powerful one in the game. So much so that buying it just for the active is the primary reason it is gotten and getting it on champs just for said active even if the stats aren't optimal can be situationally beneficial on virtually every champ in the game.

Its active alone is a get out of jail free card.

Don't misconstrue what i said. Blue Buff isn't gonna resolve any issues. What it does is on top of the other things i mentioned (because Blue Buff doesn't exist in a vacuum) it will mitigate whatever little issue you seem to believe will persist after the changes (ones that i dont even think will exist)

Also, you may be playing at a different level than me, so my experience may be different than yours, but in my experience, grail was being bought a lot in the mid lane - specifically on mana using champions who spammed abilities, such as ziggs, but who don't want to be utterly useless before their tear gets stacked.

The change to grail was intended to kill it for champs like Ziggs who would infinitely spam long ranged safe seige without consequence. I repeat. It was the point.

Riot saw an issue with that kind of unrelenting unrestrained level of wave clear and poke without any real drawback and i can't help but agree that it is problematic.

In my experience tho, Orianna did in fact prefer Tear tho or even just straight Morrelonomicon.

And after the change, Orianna will likely still get it if she falls behind to transition into more of a support-ish role (which she often does)

the fact of the matter is that there were only two items in the game that 'invalidated' your mana bar, and those were seraphs (which takes forever to stack on most champs) and grail (which has very little AP to compensate). Going oom during sieges or teamfights isn't an option that a mana user with poke can swallow, so basically, you HAVE to build seraphs now. You are going to be seeing this item every single game someone picks a mage, i can guarantee it.

Nah, people will be getting the new Morello just as they had been before. it gives 100 AP now as well as a great amount of flat mana, the free mana on level up and the CDR and grievous wounds passive. it might be a bit OP honestly.

The Ice sot item also has the eternity passive and New Rod will basically make it to where you are good to go. Only champ i can really see always specing into Tear specifically IS Ziggs.

Brand's teamfight presence is definitely terrifying now. However, that doesn't invalidate the point i was trying to bring up, which is that his single combo burst is significantly lower now.

It isn't. He triggers the bomb on his single target all in which in of itself also refreshes his passive. It is the same if not a bit stronger technically and the effect hit has now makes it to where your Ult will hit them more times than before thanks to the new target priority on it.

Or you could have just as easily in that situation just E>Q'd your opponent. The situation you are describing is needlessly situation and contrived.

No self respecting orianna would ever, EVER be caught dead buying gunblade. ever. Speak for yoruself mister short sighted.

Currently sure. New changes to it speak differently

for perspective, will of the ancients did orianna every bit as much good as current gunblade does her, except that it's less expensive and doesn't provide 40 useless* AD. And she didn't buy that, so why would she buy gunblade? As for the frost shot one, she would never buy that. I can only imagine the item being bought either on supports or on champions that want a slow, but don't get one.

Dude, Wota is getting removed from the game. Look up the new Gunblade. you aren't stupid so yu know that this paragraph was basically you just needing somethign to reply with for the sake of it.

I main ori and i never bought rylai's on her. I haven't seen other people buying it on her, either, but i imagine that if they did, it was more because it's a 100 AP item that also gives a bunch of health rather than for the slow - which she doesn't need.

You should try it sometime then. ">_> No. people buy it for the stats sure because that goes though everyones mind when they buy an item typically. (Unless it has an OP active like Zhonyas) But the slow is also a huge part of it because it makes it to where she allies a lot of pressure and kitting in teamfights with her 3 second Q. her W isn't up enough to where it matches this let alone the slow on her Ulti being very potent.

Im gonna close my eyes and pretend you dont know how to read. The new Eternity passive makes RoA incredibly powerful. Champs Like Swain, Karthus and even Singed are gonna be monsters in team fights with it now and the only stats it gives less of are mana and a bit of AP. The old passive to new passive change only makes it weaker for champs that got it purely because it was a stats item as opposed to champs that got it specifically for synergy with their kits.

by everyone, do you mean all of the AP assassins? because last time i checked, that build was core on leblanc and ahri; but not on ziggs, vel'koz, orianna, brand, mid zyra, lux, and xerath, all of whom - last time i checked - still prefer grail.

Im guessing you don't play leblanc or Ahri actually got Morrelo and Luden's. Fizz got Luden's and Lich Bane but Okay. And again, all these champs dont get grail. They get Morrelo.

*the 40 AD is 'useless' on AP ori if she didn't buy nashors and get one or two defensive items - something a self respecting midlaner like me would only try in a norm, #trust. However, Gunblade is one of my favorite items on AP ezreal, among other champions.

Read my previous post about this. Also, i am a Mid lane main as well.

Your whole complex, much like everyone elses seems to be you are tuck with this preconception and refuse to see why these changes are being made and simply see changes. To you, it seems to be nothing but a game of buffs and nerfs but it isn't that simple.

First off: I'd like to thank you for taking the time to respond again to my case. I'd also like to say, again, that i disagree with you, and i'll continue on that now.

Yes, you're a mid lane 'main'... but match history says you've only played six ranked games in all of 2016. Only two of those were mid; both were as lissandra; in neither game did you take tear or any CDR items whatsoever. No, you bought ROA. If you'd like to take a look at MY match history, i'll happily link it to you here. http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-history/NA1/51221811?champion=61&matchType=2 Pay close attention to my Orianna history. between 2014 and 2016, i completed frozen heart on orianna 15 times. 11 of those times, i won. of the 4 Losses, only in ONE of them did i go negative - 4/7/9, against a pre-nerf 19/1/5 yasuo in a game with a score of 19 to 40. This was in 2014. I had the lowest deaths and second highest kills on my team. In contrast, i built Grail 21 times, and Nashor's 5 times. How many times did build Morello's as my CDR item? Three times, in all of my ranked games between 2014 and 2016 in my match history, i bought the item.

Oh, weird! i just checked your match history for ranked orianna games between 2014 and 2016... there don't seem to be any! how fucking odd is that? Gee, must be some kind of bug. Well, that's fine. Let's check for ziggs games! ...oh, my. There don't seem to be any ziggs games, either... Well, what about on brand? Nope, NO games.... Vel'koz? Veigar? Hmm...Well, Lux, surely? Oh, there we fuckin' GO! two lux games! And here, a syndra game, too! want to know what item you rushed in those three games, on both champs? Want me to /tell/ you?

yeah, that's fucking right.

Athene's Unholy Grail.

first item. <|:o)

So, like, if you weren't playing immobile mages this whole time in the mid lane, and you're such a mid main... well, then, gee, i wonder who you were playing, down there in the middle lane?

Edit: as it turns out it WAS a bug i rechecked and you do have ori games - 11 of them in total, between 2014 and 2016. In just over half the games, you bought Morello's over grail. Alright, i concede on that point. Buying morello's on ori is, apparently, an option. It's just not one i agree with. To contrast, i played 97 ranked games with Orianna in that same time frame. I played 12 games with Lux, however, and in those games you see a similar, nearly even split between grail and morello's, and wins/losses, as with your orianna experience.

i, uh i wrote a bunch of rebuttals to your earlier points in here but i cut them at one point and i was gonna paste below and then i copypasted my match history and i lost everything lol

well, anyways, the biggest points were basically

  1. it takes 20 seconds without boots and ~18 seconds with tier two boots for brand to walk to mid lane. He's no faster or slower than most other immobile mages, so how can you say it takes a minute to walk to lane? (i just tested this myself on PBE btw)

  2. ROA is still a decent item on the likes of swain and maokai, who tangle enough to make use of the new passive. However, the loss of some of its core stats (significantly, AP) and its per-level healing passive makes the item much weaker now on everyone else - especially Brand, Aurelion Sol, and Anivia, who made heavy use of the item beforehand.

Please ignore the Diana games in my match history - i screw around every single game i play in norms, and sometimes i carry that shit over in to ranked. Hybrid bruiser diana with rageblade is a lot of fun, but it is NOT viable. I'm having a little trouble letting go, though.

jr deputy meow2 votes

I think another issue is that champions like fizz, zed, ekko and leblanc are being played almost every game now at many skill levels, sort of like what happened season 4. Now, some mages (like ori) can fight these champs, but ori isn't the only mage in the game, and most of the other mages feel like they're forced to sit at tower and farm from behind every time someone picks one of these champs. That isn't a fun way to play the game.

Marshbouy1 votes

That's why they don't want to buff mages. The one with a tiny amount of toxic in their kit (or a lot such as fizz) will get crazy if their items get buffed

jr deputy meow1 votes

fizz isn't a mage, he's an assassin i'd argue that the zhonyas nerf damaged immobile mages (and fiddlesticks) a lot more than it did fizz, who is still safe after the nerf. It's not like it was his only answer to someone jumping on him and immediately blowing him up. but what do they want immobile mages to do about champs like zed and leblanc now? Has everyone been reading protobelt incorrectly? is it actually a defensive item? i mean, i guess i could see it like someone jumps at you so you facebelt them and use your combo and they blow up with you? i guess?

Marshbouy2 votes

he is a mage assassin. If they buffed something like ludens echo becasue it wasnt dealing enough damage it could make fizz crazy. Totally agree with you on protobelt, people were complaining about mobility on champions being OP so riot gave immobile champions movility for defensive purposes (to help escape a fiora engage or something) and the boards totally got the wrong idea

jr deputy meow1 votes

no, the jump is so miniscule that it's not helpful for something like that however, the point blank damage on it is absurd so it's very good for someone like leblanc but maybe it could also be used to blow someone else up if you dashed in to them when they jumped you

Marshbouy2 votes

its 300 units. Thats enough to dodge a fiora diving at you under turret (she cant get the cooldown reset on it)

Actually, since it fires... fire (sorry) in the direction of the dash, it was more likely designed to be an engage tool.
