What is Jarvan IV's identity in the game?

Hi, Jarvan main here.

Jarvan IV was the third champion I ever bought when I started League. The moment I discovered him I fell in love. I've played him in his high and in his low moments, almost exclusively top lane, though I have tried him out in other roles. I feel that his laneing height was near the middle of season 4 (I never knew the guy in his true prime). Buffed or Nerfed, I'll always play him.

I'm just wondering however, with roles being specifically assigned to champions, where does J4 fit in? Is he too, a Juggernaut? Is he a peel tank? Is he an assassin? A fighter? Is he an Anti Carry?

I feel like he does a lot of things, but is never optimal for one particular role. Ever since his last nerf, I've been playing him as a kind of AOE bruiser.

Building these items in this order, generally. /

He gets good results with this build, but I feel that its more me knowing Jarvan's mechanics that make me do well with him than the build itself. Every kill is a challenge, and he generally feels harder to play than most juggernauts and melee carries, with less bounce back if he's behind.

So am I building something wrong on him? Should I retire Ravenous Hydra in favour of the new ?

Or is this just a champion thing, the strong Champions are too strong or Jarvan is too weak etcetera?
