So use to play the game a lot, managed to claw my way to bottom rung of Gold after several seasons (like started season 3, got to gold in like season 6). Ended up stepping away from the game for a while (right around the end of the meta). Since coming back i've managed to get up to Gold 1 and honestly it feels SOOOOOO much easier. Did i miss something? Even accounting for new comp = better game play, why am i "crushing it" all of a sudden? Or did Riot finally do something to weed out a lot of "The Bads"?

you're still as trash as you were before, the ladder just changed a bit. 4 tiers now instead of 5,and there's iron rank now.

Fair. I forget did they put anything better gold and the next rank. i thought i remembered there being two additional ranks.

Yep they added Iron below Bronze, and Grandmaster between Master and Challenger.

Weird, i would think Platinum would not be the rank name for your "mildly better then average" player base....

I suppose i am curious to see where the drop off is for number of players VS. skill level. Going to be real sad if i get into plat 3 and suddenly my wait times go from 1 min to 20 mins.

Somewhere in the middle of Gold 1 you are looking at the top 20% of the playerbase.
