I still believe that Champion Mastery should decay over time.

I'm pretty sure I made a post about this quite awhile ago, but it was downvoted into oblivion. But after looking at my champion list.......I still believe this.

For example.....I have Mastery lvl 4 on Fiora; 13,948 points to be exact. However, I can't even remember the last time I played Fiora. If I'm to take a guess, it was probably a few months after her rework, and I haven't touched her since.

My Mastery Score does not adequately show my mastery over this champion. If I am to play Fiora one day, my performance would not equal that of someone who has put in the time recently to get that amount of Mastery.

That being said.......I do also believe that the higher your mastery rank is on a champ, the longer it should take for your mastery to decay. Gnar was my very first Mastery 7 champ, my most played champ in both season 5 and 6, and he was also the highest mastery champ I've had for a really long time until Ashe finally overtook him sometime earlier this year. I have 111,152 mastery points on this champ, and even though I don't play him as much anymore, I can still hop on my favorite little furball and kick some ass with him. The amount of time I put into this champ still allows me to be extremely familiar with everything about him, and it will take quite some time before I feel that Gnar is no longer familiar to me.

So, Mastery should be like this: say you have a champ at only Mastery lvl 2, but you haven't played that champ in roughly 6 or so months. After that time, your Mastery should decay at a certain rate, maybe 10 to 20 mastery point per day, until eventually it goes back down to Mastery lvl 0.

But, on the other hand, lets say you have a champ at Mastery lvl 7. Your Mastery should not start decaying on that champ until it's been like 2+ years of not even touching the champ, and even then, the mastery score will decay slower than if the champ was at lvl 2, maybe around 2 to 5 points a day.

With this kind of model, my Fiora mastery score (for example) would have started decaying a long time, and likely would have reached maybe mastery 2 or even lower by now. However, my Gnar mastery wouldn't even be close to start decaying since I did play a couple games on him earlier this year.

I just want Mastery to better reflect the amount of time someone has put into a champion, and if they haven't played that champ in quite some time, the mastery score should also reflect that.

TL;DR

Mastery Score should decay depending on how long it has been since you last played the champ, but also based on how high of a mastery you have on the champ.

< EXP points > < Mastery points >

Both visible. Banner is kept but can show rips or tears if mastery points has decayed.

Mastery points only remain every [X] month(s) and decay slowly when the champion is not played, EXP points rack up always like they do now. Mastery points are gained three times as much from a decayed state.

The solution seems feasible and shows a clear mastery of a champion in a more complete dynamic. Just my proposed solution though, but I do think it would be rather nice.

It is a good idea to have an indicator that the person hasn't played that champ in a while, but I don't think that it should decay but I like to have an option to reset it to zero. It is still just points, doesn't really matter how many you have, you still going to have bad games.

Off topic:

I have 1m+ Mastery Points on Kindred, and sometimes I would like to be able to hide it, because everyone expects me to carry everygame and win it, it's just getting annoying after a while.

But...

I still wish that players who managed to gain 1m+ mastery points on any champ, should have a loading screen border on that pacific champion indicating it.

Long story short, I don't like to give negative feedback on ideas, so I will upvote this post :)

There would be no point to this as mastery is completely pointless anyway. Good job, you played a champ enough to happen to coinflip S+ games. You also coinflip enough F- games too. Every player is aware of this. This was to give players a sense of progression/reward, which it does terribly at that as well.

Oh god, yes. I hate to see that lvl 6 Irelia on my account.

Much as I'd hate to lose icons on champs I don't want to play as much, it really does make sense for you to have to maintain mastery status.

I'm mastery 7 Ekko. I got to that by playing Tank Ekko jungle, which does not exist viably anymore. I would prefer my rank be reset to 1 so I can master him as an assassin or an AP bruiser in top lane

As someone who has 64 level 7 champions, gotta say I'm not a fan. Perhaps when the system first came out this would've been a cool way to signal who really spams their character, but after so many years of it being a sort of diversity score for many players, people would just be too mad if Riot changed it.

That being said, what if every S you got (or some other way of keeping score) gave you stars, numbers, or just more cool stuff on your laurel on the loading screen. In game, your level 7 mastery could evolve and look different depending on the S's you've accrued. They either fall off at a certain point or decay if you're not playing the champ. That could be cool. In Smite level 10 is the max and every so often after that your level 10 icon gets extra stars as you get more xp. Could be a good tradeoff of expirable cool stuff that shows you're up to date on your character while still keeping the numbers intact.
