The Future of LoL; Or my idea for an expansion.
_This is an idea about how the game could advance on over the years. It is, decidedly, a departure from a MOBA, and wouldn't use the LoL client necessarily. I'm thinking of a Riot expansion on LoL. _
So I just recently read a post about how there's a disconnect with the Lore and the gameplay. That, for example, a Noxian can fight another Noxian for no reason, or a Zuanite can go to war with a Piltoverian and it's just fine. Personally, I don't mind that, but the game needs to progress so I'm offering a solution. The other side of this coin is the non-SR game maps. Some have gone over well (ARAM) and others less so (Dominion). Given all of this, and the clip at which they're releasing champions, I'd make the following suggestion: Don't make the next big map a MOBA. Make the next big map something closer to an MMOFPS. I'm thinking specifically of Planetside (PS) for this, so you may want to use that as a reference point.
If you haven't played PS, all you need to know is that it was:
- A first-person shooter
- 3-faction game *10 continents
The short-version is that you choose a faction, build up your character (level 25 iirc) and you attempt to take other continents through a Dominion-like mechanism.
Given that there are roughly 10 factions in LoL (Demacia, Noxious, Shadow Isles, Zuan, Piltover, Bandle City, Ionia, Bildgewater, Freljord, Icathia/Shurima), roughly the same model could be used. To be clear, I think this can be achieved roughly with the same LoL mechanics as we have now, (i.e. don't make this an FPS) but this essentially would make an on-going MOBA game people could hop in and out of, with a Capture Point location (or 5) in each city.
Riot looks to be focusing it's competitive-scene glories on Summoner's Rift (as it should). What I'm suggesting here is a decidedly non-competitive (due to it's never-ending nature) that would fail to go stale as new units were introduced. It would also give strong reason to keep producing once you hit about 300 champions.
