Just Some Advice

I've been thinking about it and, while most will never quite pay attention to it, I could share some advice that I have picked up over my years in League of Legends. Been hanging out here since release, and there are a few things that I have picked up that make my life in League that little bit easier. Here we go:

Calling People Salty (and other such nonsense)

Sometimes players will get irritated, and express this in chat. The best and fastest way to make your game a 4v5 is to start calling them Salty or Whiners. We all get irritated, and while it might be slightly amusing to taunt the one who happens to get irritated... this tends to simply make them rage (which is then a problem for you) or report you. I see enough posts on the forums asking why so-and-so is banned... could be why. Verbal Harassment does not mean you cussed them out, as that is a different subsection.

Seriousness of Players

Those of us over the age of 25 will never be invited to play in a Leagur of Legends tournament. Despite some wishful thinking by a few... it simply won't happen. Many of the younger players also realize that they will never compete on the professional level, even if they were better than team members of professional teams. Those of us who realize these things play the game for fun, and as such do not delve incredibly deep into paying attention to the Metagame, core builds, and other such nonsense... and below professional play it is nonsense. We generally do not mind that others enjoy taking things this seriously, but we do start to have an issue when the insults begin to fly... merely because we didn't watch the last tournament to know that WuKong doesn't use a Trinity Force any longer. (Just an example, don't harp on it.) The hilarity begins when we run it anyway, dominate, and are still getting insulted for having the audacity to have fun and build what works for us.

A number of us will merely block and report you. The younger crowd, however, will simply leave the game... leaving you now in a 4v5 yet again that, statistically, you are going to lose. All because your favorite pro player said something about how they build a champion. Seems silly, doesn't it?

Sustain vs Burst - Tank vs Bruiser - etc

Some champions fill a very specific niche, and really do not have many viable options when it comes to their setup. Having been designed for exceedingly specific purposes, they do not benefit in any way from swapping their subgenre to fit your play style. For most, however, this is not the case.

You can never quite know what to expect out of someone running Pantheon as AP... Annie as AD... and other "troll" builds. They are indeed mathematically screwed up. They are indeed counter intuitive. They are indeed silly. Why have these builds lasted for as long as they have? Because some people make them work, even competitively. It really depends on the player, their style, and whether or not they can pull it off. There is no reason to go into a rage because you see it, nor dodge the queue because someone mentions they are going to do it. All you manage to do is waste your time, not theirs, as you sit out the dodge penalty, and they go on to play what they wanted anyway. You only punish yourself.

ARAM vs Ranked/Normals

ARAM is a very, very, different animal than Summoner's Rift. Builds that are absolutely vital in Rift simply do not work in the Howling, and some things that work far better than they should are commonplace. The difference in kill totals, creep score, and lack of jungle or river change the tactics almost entirely. It amuses me to watch players dive into an ARAM match, and begin raging at their team for builds and styles when, ultimately, they are the one being smacked around. Chill. It's ARAM (or heck even a Normal Match). This is a game, you are not getting paid to play, and the only one ruining their day is you.

Ranked ELO

No one cares. Calling a player "bronze" has no effect on the fact they are going to keep doing what they are already set on doing. You're measuring something that has absolutely no bearing on the real world. You aren't a professional player, even at Challenger tier, and therefore no one cares what you think of them. Relax about this idea that ELO somehow designates a good player over a bad one. Many good players don't take part in ranked, and many really aweful ones are boosted to Diamond. Challenger and diamond ranked acounts are for sale by the dozen for 20$ or less on countless websites. It doesn't mean anything. The quicker this realization is made, the quicker you start having fun again.

Competition is indeed fun, but an arbitrary system is arbitrary.

Maining a Champion - Champion Nerfing

Ever watch a tournament? Who gets banned? The primary champions of the specific players in each match. They claim to "main" a champion that they never get to play in true competition. Doesn't that make the entire concept rather pointless? Think of it, rather, as sponsorship. They sponsor their favorite champion. They are summoners after all.

This also gets really tiring to those of us who simply play what ever our team needs, and do so well. We don't 'main' a champion, because that champion is going to be buffed, nerfed, reworked, and nerfed again... all this year, most likely. It's hard to 'main' something that goes from broken to useless to balanced to different. It's a moot concept, so screaming at others that you 'main so-and-so', or getting upset they aren't 'playing that champion right' is again only making you upset. Not them.

This being said - I remember champion number 41s release. I've seen maybe two champions get released who were not ridiculously over powered (they were under powered at release), then promptly beaten into the ground with the nerf bat until they can't walk. Soon after they are rebalanced and slot in with the game. This is called "business practice," and will never change.

RIOT has the ability to balance a champion, but doing so instantly lowers their income. This isn't saying anything bad about RIOT, it's merely a longer term view than players have. The champions will be balanced out, but for now let's sell this new one and their skins. Those of us who have been around awhile know this as well, so we just wait for the rebalancing. It is far less stressfulm

All of this said: Complaining that your thread about a broken champion or mechanic gets repeatedly shot down by those players who enjoy exploiting these things? Will do no good. RIOT will fix the issue when they feel it's time, and your voice matters for far less now than it did on the original boards (we even used to help design champions, from concept, art, and numbers... that section didn't transfer.). All of the issues you see now will fade away... into a whole new set of issues next year.

Remember these things, and that righteous gamer rage doesn't boil over nearly as often. The game can be fun to you again, and your odds of being banned drop drastically.

Happy Hunting, and have fun!

And while I am thinking about it, but it wont let me edit the post from my phone so I will do it later:

Kill vs Carry

The ability to kill in games is easily aquired. Generally you farm and buy the right items for your champion. The ability to carry, however, lies in being able to kill the right targets at the right times... sometimes it even means removing a tank first, if that tank creates enough dysfunction amongst your team. I've seen tanks carry, despite the ADC having all of the kills. The carry means to carry your team to victory, and as many a rager has discovered - their ability to kill does not always translate into pushing/defending, controlling team fights, or achieving a win.
