That is, except for the border and icon.

That would remove most of the incentive for players to cheat-- yes, smurfing with a diamond buddy is cheating even if it's technically allowed by the rules for the sole reason that Riot can't track it.

If all you get is the icon and border, there'd be little reason for someone to boost themselves up in rank unless they actually WANT to play against people who will be so much better than them that they hate the game.

We don't need to remove dynamic queue, we only need to remove the incentive to cheat with it.

If that's all people cared about, you'd expect no one would ever cheat beyond gold 5, but theres all sorts of stories about boosted plats and diamonds so clearly the border/icon is worth it to some people.

Really I suspect the issue isn't tied to rewards at all, so much as dunning-Kruger being a big deal for a number of players. That is to say, theres tons of bronze level players who believe they truely are gold players, and just feel they can't carry bronze/silver and so need a diamond smurf (or other forms of cheating) to bypass the bad so they can finally play with people that are 'their level'. In the majority of cases they're of course going to end up in way over their heads, but the point is they'd want the rank completely independently of actual end of season rewards.

Most of the player who do cheat only go so far as Gold 5, since it's harder to go further than that with only a Diamond buddy. Your odds of losing increase if you go past that, since then you'll be 1 Bronze, 1 Diamond, and 3 golds vs. 5 golds. And at Platinum your advantage is gone.

I didn't say the reward was all people cared about, but anyone who boosts to play with people "of their level" would simply be brought back down if they continued to play after their "friend" finished carrying them.

Isn't it also an assumption to assume that it would work as well? Also, the incentive is so that you can act like you are better than you are. Same reason people cheat at Monopoly. You get nothing out of it other than getting to say "I win". It's an ego thing. Same reason people cheat on basically any game they cheat on.

Except that you're talking as if that's the only incentive when they do provide the skin and ward skin as tangible incentives to cheat. They wouldn't need to be playing LoL if it were just the feeling they're after.
