Seriously, athenes was his staple item... the heal that it has doesn't even proc on his W. Whats the point of the athenes nerf? Does anyone use that garbo item now?

If his shield (which isn't really a shield and thus the reason it won't proc the passive) did proc it, then it would be a nice little item on him. Let me ask you this though, have you heard of 
? And if so, are you building it on Galio? And if not, get with the program.

ltmetal2 votesIn my opinion, Galio has never been stronger when building as a tank. The changes to catalyst have put mana hungry tanks over the edge. Basically, any champ who wanted to get hit anyway now gets to refresh their mana while doing it. Try taking Galio into top or jungle and doing one of these builds.
Both these builds assume 10% CDR from runes and masteries, but you can live without that.

but i just exchanged it to double dorans -> abyssal scepter 100% of the time now. maybe ill buy catalyst -> roa if its a passive lane, but being reasonable, its almost always scepter.
final build looks like this 
(now i consider enemy team comp and is it more important to have CDR, flat AP, or pen)
liandires/rylias/void for that maximum pen build so i can really put a dent in and punish non MR buyers.
I wont touch MR items, really bites I know, but theres simply no room for more items.
CDR is super valuable, but AP CDR just isn't viable without 
anymore.

I've seen various galio players just build almost exclusively MR items since they figure the passive is enough to give them damage while still being super tank and it makes me sad.

Now without athenes being a staple of that build he has to build MR items with no ap attached, basically getting 20-25ap from an MR item currently... thats garbage.
Mysticman891 votesI know, I do have an S rank on galio so I have some sense of galio mechanics, but there are those who just pile on MR regardless.
There are circumstances where multiple abyssal is not actually nonviable for what it's worth. It feels bad since you're wasting the extra abyssal passives, but if all you need is AP+MR+CDR, then it can be worth even for the raw stats, especially with galio passive.

He benefitted massively from the mage item changes, with abyssal being stronger and giving more MR + CDR, the new catalyst being good on him, and protobelt lets him get off good ults without flash sometimes.
I played him 3 times since 6.9 and he seemed really strong. I never had mana problems without chalice, I guess catalyst was enough?
