Why are people warding the middle of lanes?

SorasMemories··8 votes·3,264 views

I've been playing League for over a year now, but just recently I saw people (almost every game) ward the middle of lanes. Usually this is pretty early in the game, too. Did I miss something that we need to all start warding our lane now? Right in the middle so the minions can walk across it....

Aside from better tele set-ups I don't have an answer for earlier in the game but once laning ends it's not a bad idea to ward where you believe a teamfight will be happening. Espeically of you have a poke comp, the extra LoS makes it easier to both see an initiate coming and land the longer range shots such as a nid spear. If I see both teams regularly 'dancing' in mid-lane I'll make sure to leave a ward where the enemy team mingles to keep an eye an all 5 of them and not just their frontline.

What this guy said pretty much. Vision provides better understanding on their intents, which can either be exploited through poking if they are passive or give you more time to realize and react to their engage.

yup mostly this. also for avoiding long range shots not just landing them from outside the fog of war, its good to have vision of them if they pushed your lane

I was going to comment, but this guy hit the nail on the head.

Better than them not warding at all I'd say.

Hm, early game is odd...maybe they are trying to act like LCS players

It is usually when lanes are starting to push in either direction to get vision. People tend to walk through mid lane to get to top/bot so it makes sense to ward the middle of the lane so you can see where they are headed if they walk through. It is also good if you just pushed and are backing off to ward the middle of the lane where you just pushed to so you can make sure they will not be chasing/headed straight to an objective.

I use them to keep track of which way the lane is pushing so we don't suddenly have 3 stacked waves banging on our top inhib turret while the enemy is posturing for Dragon.

Many champs can ward hop. When using Katarina for example it is good to have at least one ward (often more) scattered around the lane.

Early game - ward hopping/tele

Late game - Vision/tele

If my team is on the defensive and I have TP, I'll often drop a ward right near the entrance to our base when we're pushing so I can TP back if one of them gets cheeky.

Post-6, middle of the lane wards are the easy (but not optimal) wards to track mid lane roaming.

Warding the lane on the side of their Raptors is the better choice usually i.e.: http://i.imgur.com/9JGYgPT.png

If I'm going mid, I always drop my first trinket ward up the lane so that I can always have eyes on my opponent. Once landing starts, I ward the bush instead, but once laning ends, I ward wherever I need to see something, which very often includes the middle of a lane. It isn't all about "Drop wards in bushes" or "drop wards in lanes" it is about dropping wards wherever you need to see something.

It's useful for tracking how many enemy champions might actually be in the lane (most teamfights are won by a numbers advantage). Also Sion

Early game vision wards can help against Twitch and Akali and such. Later on, it can be used to know which lane the enemy is planning on pushing down.

Wards in the middle of lanes are for detecting rotations. You want to know how many of their team stay in the lane after clearing the wave, and which direction they went.

This is vastly more common in mid lane than in top or bot.

I'm not sure why anyone would be doing that in the early game, except for weird teleport setups. Once you get past the laning phase, though, particularly if you believe a lane is about to be pushed, it doesn't hurt to leave a ward in the middle. Lanes are still a high-traffic area, and having vision there can be an enormous help.

Early game the trinket ward is probably put to better use elsewhere, since the lane is not always going to be pushing towards you.

In the mid-late game that location is important because generally whenever an enemy crosses over from one side of the jungle to the other, they will walk through that vision field. Thus facilitating picks/rotations/objectives etc.

Sight is good no matter where it is. Warding the middle of a lane in particular gives you a heads up as to who is potentially coming down the lane or, just like all other wards, shows you that that enemy is over there and not over here :)

Specifically, warding crossroads especially the one in front of their inhib tower gives you tons of map control as you can see if a player goes into top jungle, bot jungle or continues down the lane.

I was really shocked by it when i first saw it but i guess the point is to see who is coming with the push a few secs earlier.

Good for teleport ganks tho.

Lane wards probably don't get swept as often as tribush wards either.

For mid-lane, particularly against roam heavy champions, putting a ward near their turret lets you see which direction they roam towards. Gives your other lane peace of mind if they see it, and the one being roamed to can be safer.

Without that ward, you might be pinging MIA with them sitting at their turret waiting for the next wave of CS, thinking they're roaming. Pinging MIA is normally a huge warning to everyone else saying you have no control over your lane currently and don't know what your lane is doing.

Warding the middle of mid lane means that if the enemy mid shoves the lane to go roam top or bot, the ward will spot if he begins running toward top river, bot river, or back to his tower.

It doesn't show his final intended destination, but it does give a good overview of which direction he's heading in, so you can make a solid guess at whatever he intends to do.

This is a very good ward against a mid laner like Twisted Fate. If you a ward in top river spots TF moving up from mid lane, your top laner's likely already in Destiny range. Vice versa for bot lane. A ward in the middle of the lane gives less definite, but earlier and more holistic information about where he might be headed after shoving lane.

I see this a lot with Pink wards from my opponents... probably because I main Akali. I do ward lane occasionally when I roam so I can keep an eye on it (once I have upgraded Trinket).
