An option to report players for being unsportsmanlike

SorasMemories··180 votes·5,206 views

I want an option to report unsportsmanlike behavior. When players get enough of those reports, they get an ugly poop colored ribbon that says "I'm an ass".

I'm so sick of having people AFK on my team and someone on the enemy team be like "you guys suck anyway", "I'm honoring them because he got sick of how bad you are", "you guys would have lost WITH him, anyway", "I'm too good for these bots", "GG EZ".

I'm happy to know you are so proud of winning an unfair game.

That already fits into negative attitude or verbal abuse if it gets out of hand. I usually report the "GG EZ" types for negative attitude.

I have never heard the expression "sour loser", but I personally don't like when anybody says "GG EZ" in any position. If it really was easy, you don't need to say it because you destroyed the enemy team. If you didn't win easily, then you shouldn't be saying it. So, basically, the only people who would say it are people who just don't understand the whole concept of saying that.

Dr Birdie4 votes

I enjoy saying it when finishing a 60-70 minute game where no one had any inhibs and both nexuses (nexi?) are exposed. When it is obvious no one had an "EZ" game. Even if I lose that game.

There are situations when it is okay. Jokes are a thing.

Provengreil4 votes

Jokes ARE a thing. The issue is that when you take something that is usually read and usually meant in a disrespectful, insulting, and often lying tone, and present it with no further context, then try to pass it off as a joke, I don't think, "oh, he's just joking, it's OK." I think, "OH, I called him on his whale crap and now he's cowering, hoping to to stack up even more reporst? ban this dude."

TLDR: 55 minute game ends in your favor. Not a joke: "GG EZ" Joke: "OH SH*T WRONG NEXUS!" Best: "talk about giving us a run for our money. Well played indeed."

Dr Birdie3 votes

I didn't say that it's the only thing I say. I also compliment the enemies good plays and admit my mistakes.

And it isn't without context. I presented the context. The context was a hard fought battle between equally matched sides. AND you are assuming that I was being called out on bullshit all game in the in-game chat.

I am not the kind of person to mock those who I beat or blame others for my losses, and I would appreciate it if you did not present me as such.

I am just saying that it is okay to say things that are often viewed as an insult in an affectionate tone. Like when my best friend calls me names, and I him.

Provengreil4 votes

55 minute game ends. GG EZ.

Not. A. Joke.

No one gets it in real time, if they get it at all, and it isn't funny. Get that idea out of your head. People read it and think you're insulting, them, period.

As for calling out bullshit, I mean calling you out for saying GG EZ. I do it every match I see it. Half the people try to say, "It's just a joke." No it isn't, no it wasn't, and it really never will be.

"I am just saying that it is okay to say things that are often viewed as an insult in an affectionate tone. Like when my best friend calls me names, and I him."

You ever see two black guys call each other " my N***A"? Go try that with people you don't know and see what happens. Same thing, just less charged. Keep it between your friends.

Bergk2 votes

Why can I only up-vote this one time? I report 100% of people that say "gg ez" at the end of a game, even if they are my real life friends.

Dr Birdie1 votes

I say it in a friendly manner because I have BEEN making friends with these people throughout the game. I am not just sitting there silently all game, not saying a word, and then "GG EZ," at the end and leave.

I have already said that throughout the game I was complimenting their plays and admitting my mistakes. Through this communication I have with my, and the enemy, team, I create this short lived bond that makes us friends for the time we are together.

If I am having a bad day and don't want to talk to the enemy team, I am not going to say "GG EZ" at the end because I have no reason to. I have not been joking around with them all game, why would my first one be something that could be taken insultingly?

You have been taking everything out of context to make me look bad no matter how many times I give you the context.

Yeah, it would look bad to an outsider if their only experience with me and my friend was seeing me say "Sup dick?" But then when you actually look at the context you find that there is nothing bad happening in the situation.

Bottom line is, if someone has been very friendly to your team all game, complimenting you on your great outs and awesome engages, and then says "GG EZ" "LOL" "GG though you guys have a good one." I don't think I should be reported just because you don't want "GG EZ" to be said as a joke. It just makes me feel bad for being friendly.

Let me ask you, why can it not be a joke?

And please stop trying to make me look like an asshole when you know, from all of the context I have given you that I am not.

Provengreil1 votes

OK. I do this kind of thing all the time. Almost every day, in real life. Your internal monologue sounds friendly. Your text does not. your text is words on a screen, read by people who just lost, and the text gets filtered through those emotions. GG EZ will far, far more commonly be read as an insult because of this exact reason.

Why can't it be a joke? Anything can be a joke. But GG EZ SHOULDN'T be a joke, because the expected audience has a high chance of reading it wrong, and even if they don't there are other jokes in much, much better taste with the same payoff. It's uncreative and simply not funny. If you're so good at building a small rapport even with your opponents midgame, find a way to make a joke based off those conversations. It'll be funnier, friendlier, and you'll never be left standing there like the guy who just straight called his boss' mother a whore and tries to pass it off a joke when everyone stares without laughing.

And your final line is rather amusing as well. All we really know about you is that you proclaim GG EZ, while laughing(apparently; it's funny, right?), at victory, after what was clearly not an easy game, thinking it's funny and that having said a few words beforehand makes that OK. What would I have to do TO YOU to make you look like an asshole?

Dr Birdie1 votes

In my experiences when I am joking around with the enemy team throughout the game saying things like "HAH, I got Drag! So it's worth!" after they take two inihbs, they realize that I am joking and are friendly in return.

I feel like you are greatly underestimating people's ability to understand humour and context.

And again you are leaving out crucial pieces of context with which I have provided you. "GG EZ" isn't the only thing I say and then leave. I almost always have full conversations with those that stay. And most of the ones who don't stay, say something like "LOL GG" and leave.

If anyone says anything about it not being easy, I talk to them about it, I am aware that not everyone comprehends humour the same way. But I am not going to change my jokes because a few people don't like it. The majority of those I have met understand the joke and laugh. Because, IN CONTEXT, it is obvious that it is not meant as an insult. Which could be one of the reasons I have a lot of friendly honours, and have been playing this game for two years without so much as a warning from Riot.

It isn't just about how it sounds in my head. It is prefaced by an hour of laughter and trust. And followed by compliments and friendly criticisms from both sides.

If you are going to continue to just say that "GG EZ" shouldn't be spoken by anyone in any context I am just going to stop trying to defend myself, because I hate trying to deal with people who want to sensor everything they personally don't like, regardless of whether or not it is an insult at all.

Provengreil1 votes

"I feel like you are greatly underestimating people's ability to understand humour and context."

Do...do we play the same game here?

From the beginning my point hasn't changed. GG EZ is far too easily misunderstood as an insult, and for fun and humor there are simply better options. At every post you have to pour on clarification, which actually proves my point. If it wasn't so easily misunderstood, and was actually funny, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Dr Birdie1 votes

But you are the only one I have met that misunderstands me to this degree. That is why I am stumbling to try to clarify.

Like I said, I have never had any problems like this with the people I play with and against. You merely don't care about context.

You seem to think you speak for everyone in the community. Saying, quote, "No one gets it in real time, if they get it at all, and it isn't funny." when that just plain isn't true. A lot of people DO get it. You know how I know? The majority of the people I play with honour me after making those kinds of jokes. And the few that don't get it I tell them "hey look, it was a joke." And they are cool with it. Because they know that there is no malice, because they understand the context.

You are blatantly disregarding the context.

But all that aside, I don't think it is nearly as misunderstood in any of my cases, and probably many others', as you make it out to be.

Say you and I were on opposing teams. Throughout our hard fought 65 minute game I am constantly joking around with your J4 Jungle saying things like "report J4 for intentionally feeding... Riven." After he camps top and gets his own Riven like 5 kills on our Rumble. And he comes back with silly stuff like "I'll report myself for that if you report yourself for that troll build. AP Veigar? Pffft." And we barely close it out with your team acing us before we take your nexus, and you guys pushing mid and taking our Nexus with the death timers.

I say "GG EZ J4" he says "Too EZ" you're just going to report us both?

I was hoping I wouldn't have to spell out an exact situation for you but apparently I do.

You do not need to report someone 100 % of the time just for using the phrase "GG EZ."

Provengreil1 votes

I'd have muted you at 15 minutes, told both jarvan and riven to stop faffing around with the enemy and press our current advantage and ended by 30. And they may or may not have stopped chatting with you but they'd go with it on the explanation that we can actually end before rumble's monstrous midgame comes into full swing and never see the threat of a 1400 AP veigar. Assuming you do manage to turtle it out because, say, your bot lane has super waveclear (sivir/anivia maybe?), all I see from you is endgame lobby.

GG EZ LOL. wtf is this joker talking about? Don't know, don't care, I have shit to do and 65 minutes was too long for a game we had at 18.

Dr Birdie1 votes

Why would you mute me for being friendly?

T RexHasTinyArms2 votes

There's a difference between being a sore loser (assuming that's what you meant) and thinking someone is a prick because they're being a jerk. If I beat a 13 year old at basketball when I'm watching over my little cousin while his folks are out of town I don't give him shit for being bad at basketball. I've got a decade of experience on the kid, and out weigh him by 50-60 lbs, as well as benching 50-100 lbs more than his max. If I don't beat him I'd be surprised, so why brag.

In lol, I don't brag when I win a fight that's 5v4 bc the enemy had a DC, or when I crush someone in a team fight who did well all laning phase, but I was 8-0 from the jungle and my lane feeding me. Besides, some people are really new while others have played for 4 or 5 years. If you've played for years, there are a ton of players in this game you should be beating hands down because you've had more time to practice, and you know the game better. Why would you brag about being able to do what you should be able to do? That's like talking smack at work because you came in wearing your pants put on the right way, it's just stupid.

WillHealForHonor2 votes

ur right... Its weak.. But i dont get mad anymore cause of it.. But i get mad at people who whine in all chat.. we all have our things that pisses us off :D

T RexHasTinyArms1 votes

Fair enough. Although I think people who whine in all chat are the best bc you can politely apologize to their team that the person is putting them on tilt.

WillHealForHonor1 votes

this is cultural thing i guess.. na agree on u shouldnt boast where i would much rather be able to just flame back without consequenses..

T RexHasTinyArms1 votes

Part cultural part individual probably. I got in trouble for being too angry when I was younger and had to work on it a lot. As a result, I don't much like arguing when I'm pissed (it tends to just make me want to hit something if I'm not in a spot where I'm pretty calm, so I don't get to argue back w/ someone usually).

You definitely shouldn't be bragging if you're 23 and can only bench 50 lbs more than a 13 year old. lol :p

Edit: Also this isn't necessarily about "why brag when it was an easy win by saying 'gg ez'"... I've had opponents say "gg ez" to me when I was crushing them all game and they only won because they got hard carried.

Your example would be more fitting if you were playing 3 on 3 basketball against 2 little kids and Kobe Bryant, and it was just you and 2 friends... and when the little kids win they say "gg ez" to you. That's more along the lines of what happens in most league games.

Long story short... unless you were the one who hard carried in your game and you're like 20-1-10 and the enemy team surrendered at 20 because you were just dumping on them... you don't get the right to say "gg ez", and even then it's still a d-bag thing to do, and deserves a temp ban for verbal abuse.

T RexHasTinyArms1 votes

I love the analogy you use. Ha, that is definitely the way I see it happen most often. I actually did mean someone stomping the hell out of a team and then being a d bag about it though. In that case they were right about it being easy, but the complaint isn't bc you're a sore loser it is that they are a douche. Sore loser is the one who complains about their team holding them back even when the people beating them aren't being rude about it.

Also maybe my math is wrong, but that's like going into high school age right? I was always more academics than sports in high school so I only benched like 150-180 depending on the year it was in high school. Bench 240-250 currently if I have t been slacking a bunch. 240-180 is 60, and yeah 240 isn't an impressive bench or anything, but it's not super weak, and it's a really big difference from 150 if we're talking generous with the difference.

Lol... no... 13 is like 7th grade middle school. At 13 a kid is checking out the peach fuzz hairs growing on their upper lip. No way you should be 23 and only benching 60 pounds more than a 13 year old. Unless that 13 year old is freakishly strong and into weight lifting.

At 23 you should be benching the 13 year old while they are benching 120 pounds. :p

T RexHasTinyArms1 votes

Na I did math, and 13 was when I started HS (although I did turn 14 early in the year freshman year), and I mean I still don't bench over 250, so yeah if the expectation is that early/mid 20s you should bench over 250 then I'm not able to do that, but I don't mind that because I don't really play sports any more.

Conus252 votes

But if there was an ezreal on the other team and you report the person who said "gg ez" to ezreal for being unsportsmanlike, then you yourself could get banned for accusations against another player.

Nebuul5 votes

You cannot get banned for bad reports. Your reports will just get flagged as useless and you won't be able to get genuinely nasty players punished.

TheFameAnimal1 votes

ANY time someone says that I just instantly say, REPORTED. It bugs me sooo much -_-

AikidoLawnNinja17 votes

I think what you really want is for the "Negative Attitude" report to actually DO something. As it is, it's really hard to get banned unless you're spewing obvious hate speech (racism, homophobia, etc.) or leaving games all the time.

Even deliberate feeders seem to escape the ban hammer unless their feeding came bundled with a chat message of "F*%K YOU F*##@T A$$&@%# N^%%#&!!!!!".

This makes me quite wary of the new automated punishment system. In my opinion, harsh and immediate punishments dolled out by computer programs are just BEGGING trolls to abuse the system. When trolls know how fast and hard your ban will come, they'll work even harder to try to get a rise out of you and frustrate you into getting yourself banned.

Like by taking a single hit from an enemy laner and jumping under the tower to feed a kill, then doing it again in the next lane, and the next, until the entire team is cursing them in chat. Meanwhile, they've got the ear-to-ear troll grin and a smug sense of self-satisfaction knowing that the TEAM is more likely to be banned for venting their (justified) frustration, so long as said troll refrains from using a few nasty keywords.

So yeah, I agree with your sentiment, TC. After all, if someone is using the chat to spread hate and abuse, you can always just mute them or turn off the chat entirely, but if they're using the actual GAMEPLAY to piss people off, there's nothing anyone can do but grit their teeth and bear it until the game is over.

EvilRabbitt6 votes

I hate it when people get super sexist. =/ And no amount of reports gets them even chat banned.

Aeolian Melodies8 votes

Automated warning (punishment even moreso) is complete BS. ESPECIALLY on a game where technical issuse are so frequent.

I got warned by the system twice for "afking" when the firewall error bug was around a couple of months ago.

Let's put things in perspective here: all game modes put together, in the nearly 5 years I've played LoL, I have around 5k games played.

I can count on the fingers of ONE hand how many games I left/actually afk'd in, and I'd still have fingers to scratch my nose with. There's no way my afk/leaves ratio was alarming enough to gain a warning from any normal reasoning, so to get warned TWICE after two forced afks when the issue was not on my side got me angry enough to write a lenghty support ticket about it.

quake122551 votes

Just because you have barely left any games in the last 5 years doesn't mean you get a reserve of games that you could AFK in to make up for it. You are held to the same responsibility as everyone else, you aren't special because you have a good record. If you AFK frequently in a short amount of time, you'll get warned no matter what.

ZeichiVos1 votes

I think you missed the point of his comment. He's saying that 2 afks total resulted in 2 warnings. That is unusual.

DeynaTaggerung1 votes

I'm curious, after writing the ticket did Riot do anything for you since the system unfairly flagged you?

Malicious Fury3 votes

You can get a 2 week suspension for just arguing. Even you if never swear, be racist, homophobic, sexist, hateful, etc. Even if you never call people names; even ones that are like "nub" or "bronzie" which really aren't that bad. Just arguing way too damn much with people that bother you will get you a suspension. How do I know this? It happened to me. I thought as long as I didn't break all those things I mentioned I would be fine. It landed me a 2 week suspension during the holidays last winter and the moderator said if I kept up the arguing it would land me a more severe and drastic punishment. I've learned to just ignore people since. Arguing isn't really worth the time and it's definitely not worth getting a perma-ban.

Riot's behavior improvement system is such a joke. Everyone knows its broken, and everyone who says it isn't is a Riot fanboy too blinded by favoritism to their favorite company. Seriously, go into any other MOBA and tell me the toxicity is as bad as it is here. I'm not saying it doesn't exist, but FUCK, in League EVERY SINGLE GAME THERE IS AT LEAST ONE PERSON BEING TOXIC. EVERY. GAME. It may not affect me, but someone is having their game ruined because xxXpussysl8rXxx69 is calling people fags in all chat.

"Negative Attitude"

Aeolian Melodies4 votes

Honestly, a lot of report options cover that. Negative attitude, verbal abuse, offensive language and leaving/AFKing are all facettes of unsportsmanlike bahavior.

Honor crest are given to people when they receive a high amount of honor "reports" in their games. There is no way a player with a neutral attitude gets them, even less a player with a negative attitude who will likely get more reports than trollish honor mentions.

I do hate when people on the enemy team refuse to report the leaver/AFker because "lol not our problem" - fine, I hope you get a guy like him in your next ten games. "rofl this is just a normal/aram/dominion" - IDGAF which mode or map we're playing, if this a PVP game he is ruining our experience regardless. However, with that being said, if you and the rest of your team report the leaver, punishment will come anyway. Especially since the system automatically tags leavers and people who AFK for too long.

AlexXeno2 votes

I typically don't report AFK's, unless he disappeared mid match. Even then I take into account if there seemed to be issues (Like hic up disconnects). I try to make sure the people getting reported are actually leaving, not having computer issues. On the plus side, like you said, punishment will come to those who desereve it, we the community just have to remain vigilant in reporting those who have done wrong.

I would use this to report those people who see an obviously disconnected player and then immediately rush to kill them.

Then they usually say "you would have done it too." No, I wouldn't. Just because you are playing ranked doesn't mean you can't also be a decent human being.
