Moving Divisions in the Pre-Season?

Long story short I'm playing Ranked games without thinking about it because it's the pre-season. But I just got demoted - what am I missing?

Rank does not matter at all beyond potentially limiting who you can duo with right now.

What does matter is your underlying MMR. There will be a soft reset, but your old mmr is still a factor (hence soft reset instead of hard reset). If you manage to drag up your mmr, you'll play in higher mmr placement matches, and potentially get placed higher, and vice versa if you drag down your MMR.

So what you're telling me is that I have every incentive to not win?

You win and your mmr increases. Im just playing ranked just because and im destroying with shyvana jg because new runes broke her.

Press the attack and I go sorcery for my secondary. Don't remember the names but most of it should be obvious since she's an attack speed on hit champion.

Quite the opposite, based off of last season's rank you can either be placed at the same or lower rank in placements (I think the best is the rank below but I forget). But by increasing your mmr you can possibly shift that range of possible ranks higher or lower.

By losing you drop your mmr and instead of placing at the same rank you would place at a lower rank to start.

If you want to place higher next season, win games.

If you want to place lower next season, lose games.

Placing lower means you'll face easier opponents so maybe that has some appeal, but it'll mean more games overall to get to your 'true' rank.
