If you aren't going to play to win, stay out of ranked

Title

Just had a game that my team absolute won. All lanes DOMINATED. But then, our fed kat started chasing for kills and started to actually feed because of it. Our jungler either felt left out (we totally didn't need him for ganks) or just went full idiot and started diving 1v5 thinking he could get kills this way, and our team just went to shit. A game that we should've won by 20 mins ended up being a loss by 30, and it is solely because people weren't playing to win. They were playing for stats, kda, the fucking S+ rating, etc. If this is your motivation to play, then stay the fuck out of ranked so that the people who do play to win can climb the ladder.

Edit: Obviously I'm salty, but my point remains. If you are not playing to win at any and all cost, then just please play normals. That's literally the only reason that Riot has created 2 separate queues. When you join a ranked queue and you don't do everything in your power to win the game, you are actively ruining the game players like me that do take it seriously.

All I can say is welcome to plat. It seems like there's a magical invisible line just above gold 2. Once you cross into G1-P5 mmr, the throws and ego problems are so damn real.

I once had a jungle jarvan split push instead of grouping (we were winning teamfights and could've won off the next one) because "I need farm for S+" and we ended up losing because they had a vayne and J4's shenanigans bought her time to scale.

Had this issue with a vayne player who straight up told the rest of us to screw ourselves that we couldn't do anything in a 40+ min game when she hadn't been in a full out teamfight since the 20 minute mark. Naturally as we lose our 4 v 5 she goes b and tries to 3v 1 them. The defeat screen has become bittersweet at this point

That's because Plat 5 is literally a bunch of a boosted Silvers this season. Anecdotal evidence at best, but I have 4 friends personally that couldn't hit gold if their lives depended on it before dynamic that are now Plat 5. (Note the 5, they literally never go above 50 LP lol)

EDIT FOR CLARITY: This isn't a "mannnn Dynamic = boosted" comment, these guys literally boosted in 5 man groups with other friends on smurfs.

I came back after a 10 month hiatus, only to find all th guys who were pushing lower silver as high up as plat 5..... O_O

Plat 5 was always a bunch of boosted silvers.

It was never that stupidly bad, though.

Riven Riven Riven Riven Riven Riven

You sure?

Vistha Kai1 votes

I had no problems with Riven whatsoever. Granted I played mid lane most of the time back then, but still.

And the best part is all of the fucking boosted monkeys trickle down into Gold and fuck everyone legitimately trying to climb.

To hell with Ranked because it's too full of this kind of horse shit.

League of Throws.

MonkeyMadness5 votes

It's not just a throw though. I've been on both sides of some legendary throws, but this was just a refusal to win the game. Never pushed towers, never took (free) dragons. Just chase for kills, farm the waves, and completely ignoring pings/chat.

Wolf Queen1 votes

Welcome to league where no one listens to anyone and most of the time will do the opposite of what a ping/team mate says, purely just so they can feel superior instead of being led by someone else even if they know its the wrong choice.

Noblewind5 votes

a LOT of players play the game like it's team deathmatch FPS and it's a race to 50kills. So sad...

PSA: multiple 1for1 solo trades when you are the fed one = feeding

statelesskiller4 votes

i dealt with this. my team was in a bad position. for the love of all sanity they had no concept of how to push waves or control the game. like there i was getting 5 manned top (i was trundle. i had spirit visage and they have a 3k HP zac with my W and ruinic armor. im pretty hard to kill) instead of simply pushing bot since literally my entire team was there. and considering the sheer amount of effort it would have taken there entire team to kill me cause they had no ignite or grievous wounds. they instead decided to walk from bot lane to top lane. rather then take mid and bot

and then the enemy team pushed to a inhibitor for free. and i . . . i just couldnt fathom why. i bitched about it in the post game lobby after we lost. there idiot lucian actually said to me "top laners blaming others for there death lol!" and i wasnt blaming them for my death. my death was entirely my fault. but i made them take a solid 30 seconds of effort to kill me. and my team did nothing with that. they pushed the minion wave to a tower and then backed off to do nothing. even though they had clear sight of every single person on there team

TFBaam4 votes

finally another top laner with this issue i make so much free time for my team. like come on they chased me blow flashes n everything while my team just sits there and farm the jung. thats why i only play singed in a premade with irl friends or when i (hopefully) get to higher elo

i espiecally hate it when my team travels the whole map to "save me" or "save my tower" where they lose the tower when they couldve gotten one or even 2

333lom1 votes

Oh no, that farming in the jungle, you've just reminded me. I see that issue so often, it makes me want to cry.

I see the enemy team preparing to 5 man push down our mid lane, and my teammates are scattered across our and enemy jungle, farming.

They couldn't even get a lot of gold for those ten seconds. And not even them recalling then would be fast enough to save the Nexus.

Spicy Rice1 votes

The best situation is when they are 5 man siegeing your tower, and you are solo holding it while your team is farming bot Jung and top spamming missing pings

I agree. But also if you aren't going to have fun, stay out of games. It is a game, it is supposed to be fun. Having fun and playing to win is not exclusive. I know mind blowing right?

Milodic Mellodi2 votes

In Ranked, this is not the case. In any other game mode, permanent or not, you should play to have fun. Ranked is not some silly game mode where you lose nothing, it's a fully competitive mode where you climb the ladder and play as a team. One would think you should know this by now.

Odinakos1 votes

Congratulations on missing my point. Having fun and playing to win is not exclusive with each other. You can do both! And you are playing games to have fun. League is about having fun. Ranked is about wins. Playing ranked is about aiming to win while having fun. SImple as that.

And no, having fun does not mean to play teemo adc. Get it out of your head. It means having a nice enviroment to play. Flaming makes me not having fun. Along with uncooperative teams. See that those are things that also determinents to winning?

Milodic Mellodi1 votes

You're missing my point. Ranked shouldn't be played to have fun. I never said they can't be intertwined with each other, only that you shouldn't play Ranked to have fun. You should play it to win matches, fun comes second. Good humor, fun moments, camaraderie with allies and opponents each...these are a part of Ranked that are needed and good to have, but if you're placing fun over winning then you don't belong in Ranked. And about Teemo ADC...you play what you feel most comfortable playing for the role intended for you. If Teemo ADC floats your boat, I'm not gonna be the one to tell you whether your kinks are wrong or not.

MonkeyMadness1 votes

When I play ranked, winning = fun. Losing = the opposite of fun. Unfun? Not sure what to call that, and people that don't play to win (ie, don't allow me to have fun) are ruining the game for me, and for everyone that takes ranked seriously.

Odinakos1 votes

When someone plays ranked and is not having fun but raging at everyone and everything then he should just stop playing for the day.

Ranked is a place you are supposed to play to win, but it is a game so if you are not having fun, then you should reconsider why you play it. Both attitudes should be on.

Furthermore ranked is about getting better not just winning. You are gonna lose 50% of the time if you reached your peak, then what? you stop playing if you are not having fun/loosing?

And last but not least. Having fun is my primary goal(why the hell are people playing games if they are not having fun?). Improving my secondary. Winning is my stertiary. I pursue all of them. But not a weaker on expense of a stronger. Eg once my 4 range team asked me to FP a tank support. I would not do that for anything in the universe because it is asking for a double range counterpick and getting bullied all the laning phase. Then get flamed because we lost the lane. And because i am not tank enouph for teamfights. A hell experience i would not recommend. Instead i opted for Janna. Late we won the game.

I always try to pick what the team needs but i wont pick into a surely hellish experience even if it is the most optimal. Instead i will find another decent out that is funnier but still one that works. I just dont like when people rage when someone picks buys or does something different that they expected and blame it on "people having fun". As per your example, kata was mechanical great but strategical bad. Yes it bothers me also but just dont arbitary blame it on her "having fun".

MonkeyMadness1 votes

You are operating under the assumption that all people who take ranked seriously rage. While there is definitely correlation, don't confuse it with causation.

And as for this statement:

Having fun is my primary goal(why the hell are people playing games if they are not having fun?)

I am having fun. When I win. When I consistently lose due to people not taking the game seriously, the game gets VERY frustrating. I hate losing more than I love winning, and anyone with a truly competitive mindset will feel the same way.

Odinakos1 votes

No i am no operating like that. You can take ranked seriously, play to win when your primary goal is to have fun.

And since you sometime are gonna reach a point that you are gonna have around 50% win rate, wont it create a negative total experience if you hate losing more than you love winning? What is the point of playing a game if you hate it on average?

Edit: True competitive mindset puts improving on priority.

MonkeyMadness1 votes

Ok, by that statement I mean consistent losses are much more negative than win streaks are positive, and people with bad attitude cause tilts which cause losing streaks. You can tell me shit like "control your emotions" all you want, but at the end of the day, logic is NOT going to win out over emotion, especially when you are passionate about something.

And as for this attitude

play to win when your primary goal is to have fun.

This would normally be ok, except for the fact that the self-righteous asshats that embrace this mentality frequently feel the need to ensure that everyone on both teams knows this is what they feel.

Odinakos1 votes

As for the first part, you should start taking breaks after 2-3 loosing streak and start doing something more relaxing. Some physical activity, getting all zeal items on Quinn for coop. Or some other stupid things that will calm you. If you watch a replay from when you tilt, you will start questioning yourself. Just friendly advice to help you enjoy the game better. And improve yourself, as it is easier to recognize mistakes when you are in a calmer state of mind.

I wont argue about people that screws the team when "playing for fun". Ofc it is a bad attitude to have fun when you know its on expence of others. You can go Ashe support, thresh adc all you want in normals but in ranked its a no-go. As i told you its the fact that people forget that it is a game and they are supposed to have fun, coop or ranked. At the end your rank will mean nothing exept for extreme cases, just personal satisfaction that will not worth the mental burn if you overpush yourself.

DingleNutsMcGee3 votes

I went from being a die-hard everyday player, to being a once in a blue-moon player because of this very reason....essentially. No one seems to know how to play anymore. All they want to do is teamfight or 1v1, basically play team deathmatch. Whether they are ahead or behind, it doesnt matter. Instead of doing the right things to win the game, they just run aimlessly all over the map looking for someone to kill, rather than pressing their advantage by getting towers and dragons/baron. Or if theyre behind, focusing on farm only until they catch up. I've watched ppl die 3 times in lane and then pick a fight with their lane opponent!! Youve already died to them 3 times, you will not/can not win that fight if theyve already beaten you. Or watching ppl get a few early kills and think they can proceed to fight the whole enemy team, by themselves time & time again lol

Solidarius3 votes

No I like ranked, its easier than normals :D

Creepy Bubble2 votes

i completely sympathize with you.

People not fucking playing to win and just looking to pad their stats and k/d/a in ranked is a huge issue.

CoffeeDave2 votes

I don't play ranked to win, I play it to get better, to get good; to hit a new plateau that I wouldn't have done before just by spamming normals. To do my best against someone else's best to learn from both of our msitakes, misplays, and good plays. Because of this mentality I've bounced back from losing streaks figuring out what I did wrong, what I could do better, and it's because of this I've hit gold for the first time. As a solo support player. I will continue to play ranked to improve and get good, and whatever end of season bonuses I get are just the sprinkles on the ice cream Sunday when I go back to normals and win those games handily with the stuff I learned in ranked. Even with games with AFKs and trolls there's something you can learn.

MonkeyMadness3 votes

Then you are actively ruining an entire queue for millions of people. The winning mentality is critical, I do not care if you are trying to get better by playing ranked, to the rest of us, those wins mean something more than personal improvement. Your personal improvement in no way impacts the game for me, ergo you are playing entirely selfishly, and this is unacceptable in a ranked queue. You play to help your team win, and you do whatever you have to do to make that happen. If personal improvement is important to you, that's fine, it should be a goal for every player, even the top of challenger, but if you are also not playing to win, you are actively creating an incredibly toxic environment for ranked.

CoffeeDave1 votes

I win a lot more games then I lose with this mentality. I'm sitting on a 53% win rate this season. It also keeps me from tilting which happens a lot more if you play to win. I can't tell you how many times I've seen someone play to win, type : 'SIGH' after giving up first blood and then give up. I can't tell you how many times I've helped turn things around in games like this.

MonkeyMadness2 votes

I'm sitting on a 53% win rate this season.

In gold. I'm in plat, and that is just not how to play the game at this level. You only get here with a certain amount of dedication and refusal to accept defeat. And when people belittle this effort by not taking the game seriously, it ruins it for those of us that worked hard to get here.

CoffeeDave1 votes

I've been matched with and against Plat players for the past month and a half while I was still in Silver. It seems you can also get there by being boosted too.

MonkeyMadness1 votes

No, you haven't. You may have been getting matched against people with plat borders, but given that you get demoted from plat if your mmr falls below gold 5, you actually can't see current plat players in silver. They will have been demoted.

CoffeeDave2 votes

No, they were plat. these were games where my opponets were all in gold (currently), and I was in a team with at least one plat (there's that few supports that a Silver gets stuffed into a game like that).

JavelinJoe1 votes

you actually can't see current plat players in silver

That's a load of bullshit. I play against plats many times in silver. It is annoying as fuck but it happens.

MonkeyMadness1 votes

Then something is wrong with your mmr...like rly wrong. Because if you are in silver mmr, and a "plat" player is with you, it means that his/her mmr is approx equal to yours. the way demotion works is that if you hit the mmr of gold 5, you drop out of plat. So if you are silver, he's not plat. Plat boarder means plat last season, make sure you understand that.

JavelinJoe1 votes

I use other sites to tell me their ranks and more than just one site/program to do so. Also the way it is setup, a Plat cant queue with anyone like that but I think they can still be matched for balancing reasons (I am not a fan of it but don't tell me it does not happen because it does). A person can be Plat 5 and have a lower MMR but not get demoted. As long as they are above 0 LP on a loss, they wont be demoted. It is also more common among plat 4-5 and silver 1-2 than say, plat 1 and silver 5.

MonkeyMadness1 votes

I mean, unless the plats were boosting and therefore had their mmrs averaged with those of low gold players (that may have had silver mmrs) it is highly unlikely that they would be in your games. However, given the frequency of DQ boosting lately, perhaps your statement does hold some weight.

Violet Fields2 votes

I actually 100% agree with this statement, whenever I want to play for fun I just go play draft queue, whenever I start playing ranked I tell myself "Okay, this is ranked, have I did everything that I needed to?" Or something like that.

LXII1 votes

This doesn't sound as much like them not playing to win as it does a lack of the skill to know when and how to close out.

MonkeyMadness3 votes

It's plat tho. I'm aware that plat players aren't the best of the best, but they are supposed to be good. You don't get here without knowing how to close out a game.

LXII1 votes

Low plat or high plat? Because idk if anyone told you, but Plat 5 is mostly Silvers this season. I feel for anyone that actually belongs there because it has to be rough right now.

MonkeyMadness2 votes

Even if you are a boosted animal, getting to plat at the very least requires basic knowledge of when/how to close out a game. Even if they are bronze 5 bad and just queued with 4 diamond players, they have to have picked some rudimentary game knowledge along the way.

EpikFeeder1 votes

This is standard for people. Many times ive watched our mid sit back and not teamfight to protect his kda. It happens. THIS is why dynamic queue is toxic because its the "toxic duo" queue on steroids.

MonkeyMadness1 votes

This really doesn't have anything to with DQ (though I do agree with you, DQ is shit).

Teklm1 votes

3 times I've scrolled past this. 3 times I've read it as pay to win. God damn.

Jofeyy1 votes

It's so sad that this even has to be stated... People are so stupid in ranked sometimes.
