@meddler Rengar rework
Ok, I do apologise if this is lengthy, but I think this is well and truly worth it.
To start off, I'm going to discuss the context of ALL the assassin updates, just to use them as comparison. If I'm correct the universal factors to address were skill level, counterplay, depth and to a lesser case identity. Katarina and Talon did achieve a little of this, though I'm still very sceptical about the Kat rework. Kat got her dagger mechanic and high mobility and Talon got out of combat mobility and a better more interactive passive.
But then we have Rengar. Sure, you gave him a less gimmicky Bonetooth necklace, but it was really only a little benefit for him, I don't think it merited a change. I'll talk about each individual ability in detail and my opinion(s) on it.
Passive (leap+ferocity)- Ok, so first off, the change of the amount of ferocity from 5 (universal) to 4 (in combat) does a number of things. Of course the main thing is, it just makes him easier to play since you no longer have to worry about stacking to 5 ferocity to properly combo a target since due to the added mechanic of the first engage stack of ferocity granted by jumping on your target, you instantly gain 5 ferocity at the end of the jump anyway. The other problem with this is that it makes him more simplistic and he doesn't have to worry about saving 5 ferocity, he can just be trigger happy in top/jungle since it will diminish anyway. Also, adding a Stormraider's buff when he uses an empowered ability makes his kit a little bit overloaded and doesn't make much sense.
Q, Savagery- I'm honestly thinking the original purpose of changing this ability was to give more counterplay and make Rengar work harder to do damage, but it did the polar opposite. By implementing this ability his auto reset mechanic was next to removed, making him more simplistic and less rewarding for experienced Rengar players. It also feels too clunky to be on his kit, at least with his old Q you could properly reset autos to make it feel smooth. Making this ability AOE also makes his jungle clear just that bit more oppressive, and makes jungle Rengar hard to balance, since if you touch on this ability too much he becomes next to unplayable (so basically he now has a dependency on this new Q).
W, Battle roar- I want to rant about this, but I'll make this short. Grey health on an assassin makes NO sense, his previous W was more healthy. Now for the really stupid part on Riot's behalf, an Olaf ult as his empowered W. I think my main question is, why? From a design POV I don't think that this was logical at all, and fits nothing thematically for Rengar. Riot wants counterplay, yet the 2nd hardest thing to counterplay apart from targetted abilities is given to an assassin, yeah...this makes him a nightmare to balance now.
R, Thrill of the Hunt- So the implementation of Camouflage and warning system is great here since this actually does add everything said above to Rengar. What I don't understand is why the Ult. lasts so long, because even with the warning system you have more than enough time to either force a team together, force a target away or simply pick off a target. The other main thing was the addition of the crit strike when you first jump. Due to this being added Rengar now barely even needs to combo properly since this first attack usually does all the work for him, maybe throw in a Q at the end of your jump and yeah, your target is dead.
What I'm trying to say is that the Rengar rework was pointless and it defeated every single purpose that the Riot balance and design team set out to fulfil. Instead of making Rengar a more difficult champion it instead makes him very easy to pick up with a VERY low skill cap. compared to old Rengar. He doesn't feel like Rengar anymore, lets put it that way. He's also became a real nightmare to balance (who would've known....)and due to the new simplicity and frustrating components of his kit players now hate him more than ever which will force him to be gutted. From my personal POV I dislike everything about this rework and I really do think they should be reverted. However, the main thing I want out of this is your opinion from a designer's POV for everything in this new Rengar's kit.
Thank you.
