I give up, from now on I'm just gonna play assassins

vfactor95··199 votes·11,428 views

I'm just sick and tired of trying to make mages work mid lane in solo queue. Why should I even bother trying to play vel'koz and put a bunch of effort into positioning, hitting skillshots, trying not die, and all the other bullshit I have to deal with when I could just play some fucking faceroll assassin and clear waves then roam to another lane for easy kills or kill my lane opponent under turret and then blink out with some bullshit escape.

Maybe it works in 5s, but it sure as hell isn't gonna get me to Plat. Why is it the only way to climb seems to be to play early pressure champions, get stupid fed, and just carry games. I don't care about killing people over and over again, if I did i'd go play CoD or some FPS. This is supposed to be a team strategy game with more to it than just playing for kills. Fuck Leblanc, Fuck Zed, Fuck Lee and I'm glad Fizz, Talon, and Akali and every other fotm assassin that wrecks soloqueue for a period got nerfed. Why even bother playing a tank, someone who can peel, or some other champion that fills a specific strategic niche when you can make #LCSBIGPLAYS and kill people instantly. Lemme tell you Kalista is an abomination for other reasons but I have never felt happier in a game of League than when I watched one on the enemy team kite and kill our akali top.

Well, looks like I better get used to having fun by pressing Q,W,E, and R rapidly in some set combination and blowing up some poor fucker who decided to play a champion without mobility. Here's to a fun new chapter in my league experience!

Sorry for ranting but as you might be able to tell I'm quite salty over my ranked experience since the new season started.....

Malzahar shits all over assassins, Cho,Malph, Singed and Voli all counter assassins by default and if you can't beat them when they attack you, you are simply bad.

Also GP's point and click shiv proc crit 1k+ instant long rangeddamage is so dumb i could call you a hypocrite

TheI3igDaddy44 votes

You do realize that GP has to invest a shitload of money into Infinity Edge and Shiv before even thinking about doing that much damage with Q crits?

And if he decides to rush those items, he has no defense OR armor penetration, so jump on his face and / or get the tank to peel him off your carries.

GP is one of the last champs we should be discussing right now as far as ridiculousness is concerned.

Junkο7 votes

So how come you can peel GP that attacks your team from 625 range every 5 seconds but can't peel off Zed or Yasuo who jump in the middle of your team?

YOU BEEN WARNED32 votes

You know what attacks you from 650 range every 1 second? And mind you has an escape. Caitlyn .

Give her as much crit chance as you're giving Gangplank and she might as well be.

Technically she and every ADC have the same if not more crit chance than GP

If you think GP's Parrrley is long range, you are gonna love Zed's shuriken+shadow. Unless you play Zed, that way, you are probably more of a hypocrite than me. Or Nida's spear. That is super risky compared to Gangplank's poking that exhausts him from mana if he isn't farming with his Shiv, and still puts him in range of most gapclosers in the game.

Those tanks that are supposed to counter assassins can actually get fairly outkited by their mobility (Voli and Cho, especially), and it isn't hard for a Fizz or a Zed to dodge a Cho rupture or "outplay" Voli/Singed's engage with their easy mobility skills. I've seen Zeds bursting down Singeds, I have seen LeBlancs taking care of Amumus and I have seen ADCs shredding through ulted Alistars and Maokais, the only tank I am yet to see being torn to shreds thanks to penetration and BotRK is Malphite, whose ult can still be outmanouvered by mobility, something no assassin is unfamiliar with.

Malzahar is ten times more vulnerable to his victim's team than an assassin is to his'. While Malzahar lacks escapes, has a channel and is reliant on DoT, a Zed, a LeBlanc or another assassin can burst someone down and escape a lot more easily. I'm sorry, but even if Malzahar doesn't lose against assassins, most of them can matter a lot more due to how stupidly powerful mobility is nowadays, and how game-changing roaming is.

So... yeah. All those champions that you complained about can still get outclassed by any popular assassin most days of the week. Because, face it, running around isn't, by any means, being designed to counter an assassin. Tanks melt easily unless they are Alistar (that way it takes the enemy two more seconds), no need to pretend a hyper-mobile class is struggling or even even against a class whose items aren't even cost-efficient.

I have to second this comment about Malz. Yeah he can lock down an assissin's dive, but that carries huge risks outside of lane. A Malz ulting is an invitation for the opposing team to pile on him.

Not saying he is weak, but I feel his utility against assassins get's overhyped sometimes.

deadlychuck2 votes

Zed Vs Malzahar in theory sounds like it should be a free win for malz, zed ults, you follow with yours he does 0 damage right? Wrong, i've done the lane far to many times and what actually happens is, zed ults, malzahar spams as quickly as possible, and zed instantly uses Q and E as he becomes targetable, and then you're dropped to 1/5 health by the time your ult finishes and Zed is maybe just under 1/2. You didn't have time to put E on him, maybe you'll get half the duration of W on him. Q is probably on CD, if zed ulted you in the first place.

Ironically zed still wins this engage, because after your ult finishes you know what zed does? Auto, (maybe) Q, R. He killed you and got out.

EfficientDynamo4 votes

Well to be fair to the balance team, Malz offers a lot more teamwide utility. A 3 second silence that hits half their team in a teamfight can definitely turn a fight to your advantage. Zed is usually a one and done assassin after his ult is used. But Zed is unusually reliant on his ult to get kills when compared to other assassins like Talon, LB, Kha, etc.

The sad thing is that if Malz starts getting popular then people will start to QQ about his suppress with zero counterplay.

Junkο3 votes

A Zed diving into the enemy team is also a huge invitation for you to pile on him and kill him, yet you guys never do it? Why?

EfficientDynamo1 votes

Its a timing thing. Malz' ult takes 2.5 seconds to complete, and he is completely stationary. Then he has to walk out of harms way. Zed by contrast can dump his damage more quickly and can W/R between his shadows, or even abandon the attempt immediately with R.

It's not a huge difference, but to put it in context people are very angry over a .75 second delay on Veigar's stun. Very small time increments can have a big impact.

Junkο2 votes

The difference is that Veigar E isn't targeted, and because he cannot hit his W without it and his surviveability also went down. This pretty much makes Veigar unviable.

Malz ult is targeted, and almost instant, if you use it instantly to counter a Zed ult late game you and your team will kill him even without casting your other spells

LeeDark3 votes

Malz spends one second casting his spells, then channels his ult for another 2. Easy to lock him down. Zed spends less than a second casting 2 abilities and an item, then immediately jumps out and lets the ult damage finish off his target while he laughs. Even if Malz gets the kill, he isn't going anywhere.

let's not forget Katarina I see her in 1 out of every 3 games. (Normals or Ranked)

They get stupid fed and wreck every other lane. I'll get my adc fed bot but lookie here, here comes 6/0 kat to 1v5 everyone with resets and scripted mechanics

Mikal Pikal4 votes

Whenever I play kat and someone says it will be a hard lane I just laugh and explain that I get fed off bot lane not mid. I love me some Vel'Koz as well, and he is very effective, but Vel does not have the global presence that a roaming assassin does, which seems to be the key in low elo. If the champ I choose cannot help the other lanes and jungler then it becomes much more difficult to win.

Whenever I see a Kat, I always ask the mid to ping like crazy whenever she isn't in lane since every Katarina player I've seen always looks to roam and loves to try to gank bot lane. Sadly, I tend to get mids who are like. "Ping?" "Call MIA?" She'd be a lot less effective if mids knew to call out that she'd left the lane.

Nameless Voice7 votes

The problem I have is that every time I'm playing mid against a Kat, where I'm usually winning or at least breaking even, she starts to roam bot. I ping the path down and spam retreat pings until I can't ping any more, but nine times out of ten, my team doesn't retreat, but doesn't hesitate to flame me after they die. I don't know why this seems to happen so much with Kata, much more than any other champion.

Ahem....Diana

People don't realize this, but Diana is quite possibly the number one counter Kat. You keep track of Kat the entire game, and follow her roams, shell be nothing more then a walking platter of gold. :)

Civil Dawn3 votes

Since you don't know, I main support :P I'm not complaining about being against her mid, I'm complaining that it's nearly impossible to stop her as a support after she's feasted on my midlaner/jungler. Trust me, I've saved my team from countless kat-engages, but honestly in the end she's just too powerful to stop from destroying my whole team. I can't be everywhere on the map at once, and I can only have 4 wards down at once (3 green+1pink).... no counterplay unless you're playing mid with 1 of 5 champs with a lot of knowledge on how to stop a scripting Kat.

Foxymillion3 votes

i don't mean to sound like a dick but if you cant shut down kat in ranked esp. you have little knowledge of this game i mean you can easily play syndra and every time kat jumps to ult you just E her back not to mention it disrupts her ult. plenty of champions counter kat shes just way to easy to shut down

MalzaharAnyLane2 votes

That's nice, if laning were the problem and not roaming. Katarina doesn't actually care if you shove her tower in most cases.

Don't be obtuse.

Junkο8 votes

The problem isn't that assassins are too strong. The problem is that champions like Ziggs or Xerath can't endlessly spam spells anymore to counter assassins because of the mana reg nerfs. Also the removal of DFG that hurt some mages like Syndra that could deal with them.

Hallec7 votes

Ummm... Xerath with either Tear or Morello's and his passive should be able to spam spells all day long. It sounds like you don't know how to make use of the champion's kit, more than it is an issue of other champions being too strong.

Having said that Mages should be held accountable for keeping an eye on their mana pool and engaging at the proper times. I have no problem winning games with Mages. You just have to play them in the manner they're supposed to be played. If assassins are troubling you on long-rage mages, use your range and poke them early, Zed/Yas, just take exhaust. It's actually pretty easy.

Orbv5 votes

You miss the point though.

Even though Xerath can sustain, he can never win a lane against an equal Zed, ever. He needs to autoattack to make use of his passive, Zed and Yasuo can punish harshly against that.

It's not so much keeping an eye on their mana pool. If the opposing laner is an equally good pusher, is good close up, and can gank better than you, you have a serious problem. You can't keep poking them without them lifestealing the health back and pushing with no cost.

Foxymillion1 votes

lol i shit on a zed with xerath couple matches ago just stun full combo and as they say in baseball YOUR OUTTA HERE!!!

Just play J4, Zed or lee-sin.. Then you can do well and have no worries of being nerfed.

I'm not in Bronze 5 and I'm not complaining about my teammates. What I'm angry about is how effective I feel the pool of champions I like to pick from is in games. I know I'm not great at league but it just feels like I have to put in a lot more to get results from some immobile aoe mage than some assassin.

Yes if we're already doing well it helps to win more, but it's so hard to actually change the course of the game yourself, which unfortunately is exactly what you have to do to win games in soloqueue.

Yes, exactly.

Which is why I'd like to see one of the two folllowing changes in solo queue. Either

a) have rank not based off "win rate" but something more sane and individually controllable, like # of towers or overall KDR (including assists!!)

b) allow friendlist based single-battle-only ranked teams, rather than just solo/duo + full time teams. I've been invited to multiple (10? !) ranked teams. None of them have even gotten past the quals. They all just timed out.

Daen9 votes

have rank not based off "win rate" but something more sane and individually controllable, like # of towers or overall KDR (including assists!!)

This has two main problems:

  • # of towers and KDA are not valid metrics for showing what a player did to help win the game. I might go 3/10/6 and my ally might be 4/0/0, but my deaths won teamfights and the ally did almost nothing and only picked off easy kills.
  • Rewarding certain behaviors and not others would dramatically stagnate the game. If you use tower kills/KDA as the main metrics for ranking, people would not even bother with anything risky and would just push all game.

allow friendlist based single-battle-only ranked teams, rather than just solo/duo + full time teams.

How would you propose fairly ranking this? It's already pretty easy to get carried by a 5s team, it would be even easier if you could pick whomever you wanted to join it at any time.

Dralun6 votes

You are 11-6 with velkoz, what are you complaining about "not working" again? Do you even realize how absurd Xerath is right now? Your mobility doesn't matter when said champion can farm from a billion miles away. I have mobility to give me map pressence? Cool, magi bring way more siege, I bring practically none. These things are called trade-offs. It makes me mad when I see posts like this, and the fact the community actually goes ahead and upvotes these things, because god forbid the got killed by an assassin, just makes me lose faith in league players as a whole.

Chaotic Reks5 votes

xerath isn't even close to a problem. you do realize his mana costs are very high right? and don't tell me that his range is a problem because he has to go in after every combo just to restore a little bit of mana. you also do realize that xerath is ALL SKILLSHOTS right? zed without boots can literally juke everything xerath throws out. consider your facts before some QQ about a balanced champion.

mack91123 votes

I personally Main as vel koz and have no trouble Against most assassins Unless I get outplayed. Will an assassin be better in a 1vs1 situation ? Yes but the trade off is more team fight presence.

Skill shot are called skill shots for a reason. They take skill.

Nameless Voice11 votes

Sadly, they take far less skill for certain champions to avoid.

Partholonian2 votes

Most mobility like Fizz Gnar Leblanc MasterYi and even Zed has substantial CDs and they can be hit and punished when their mobility skill is on CD (unless they run away, or are fed enough that you're already dead by the time they go on CD).

And then there's Yasuo Kalista ... idk what Riot was thinking with them. You can't have a champion that categorically counters all skillshots when you're reworking everyone to be highly skillshot dependent (and nerfing the ones that aren't into oblivion until the rework comes).

Vistha Kai10 votes

Didn't think about that like this. Makes sense now.

Shinjusuke5 votes

I'm not sure why Veigar players are mad. You can farm Q twice as fast and the literally ZERO counterplay point-n-click AOE stun as wide a lane was going to go away eventually because it's almost as much bullshit as annie's ult.

If you knew the E had to go one day, you wouldn't be upset. It's just the people who legitimately think his E was balanced as-is that are all butthurt about his "nerfs".

You'll be a happier person if you don't pretend your favorite is automatically balanced because it's your favorite.

LeeDark3 votes

No, you can't farm Q twice as fast. Early on in the lane, it is still only going to do enough damage to kill one creep, unless you just happen to get two that are equally low health and can line them up. So you'll get about 10% more farm until you can just kill two creeps straight up with one Q. It will be harder to reach that point, since the new Q will inevitably push the lane... something an immobile mage with an unreliable stun NEVER wants to do.

Veigar's new kit is completely counter-intuitive, and he STILL has not been compensated for the removal of DFG, a core item in EVERY Veigar's build previously.

Yes, in order to be buffed, something about Veigar's stun had to go. Here's the thing, though... he hasn't been buffed.

Kobila20002 votes

Why does he need to be compensated? No other mage has been.

LeeDark3 votes

Ahri was, and Riot said others, specifically mentioning Veigar, would be compensated. They just couldn't make those changes all in one patch. Now they have gotten around to Veigar... and they are nerfing him. So, in total, he's lost 20% of his total damage from the removal of DFG, lost 20% scaling on his ult, lost reliability on his stun, and his new Q pushes the wave, paradoxically making it HARDER for him to farm stacks in the early game.

Kobila20002 votes

Ahri is Riot's pet. Of course she'll get buffs and Riot always acts like it's a surprise when she inevitably becomes fotm. Aside from her, not a single mage got compensated for dfg getting removed, one of which was Syndra, my previous main.

A lot of complaints about Veigar seems to rely only on some current champion faring better than everyone else, usually Ahri or Zed. You can't make arguments like that.

LeeDark4 votes

Except the argument wasn't that Ahri fared better. She is a mage, who was compensated for DFG removal, thus she is the answer to your question. The actual ARGUMENT was that Riot specifically mentioned Veigar as someone who would receive compensation for DFG removal in a later patch.

Even if I had made the argument that someone else was faring better, it would be a valid argument. Spending developmental resources nerfing a champion who does not have a ridiculous win rate, already has counterplay, and hasn't been complained about to any significant degree, rather than spending those resources on someone who IS complained about, IS first-picked or must-ban in the LCS, and has a skyrocketing win rate, is absolutely a good argument.
