Smiting the Rift Scuttler extends the speed/vision shrine duration from 75 to 105 seconds

Feels weird not to have a smite bonus on Rift Scuttler so here's a simple idea for one that isn't gamebreaking.

I think the idea of having a summoner 11 bonus on the crab is fantastic, but I wouldn't just have it strengthen its existing effect. The common element to every other Smite bonus is that it provides some sort of benefit beyond its own rewards (e.g. personal bonuses or environmental buffs, as opposed to extended buff durations or increased gold generation), and I think it would be better to have Smite provide a speed bonus akin to that of the Speed Shrine it spawns upon death. That way, you could use the Smite bonus on top of the shrine (or even just when passing by) for a quick boost when crossing over to another lane or part of the jungle.

I mean smiting blue buff just gives you mana which is essentially the same thing the buff itself does. The reason I didn't suggest something else is because it would most likely have to be something that helps with ganking (MS bonus on autoattack or something) and I don't think junglers need more tools to help with that.

As opposed to something that one might seriously incorporate into their jungle clear, I thought it would fit more as a bonus if you had to smite it in order to prevent someone on the enemy team from taking it, since as of right now it feels somewhat wasteful to do that.

the only problem that could come up with the extended vision time is possibly overlapping vision and respawn or the possibility to have near perma crab control by chain smiting it and leaving the enemy team unable to gain control of the crab. which could very well be a tactic but not exactly a high priority one. just obnoxious.

as a jungle main i still like the idea though due to adding a benefit to the crab from smite. even if hardly anyone in my ELO uses that vision. Really need out out of silver.Amumu

105 seconds is still well under the respawn time of 180 seconds.

What if Crab got the Raptor bonus (meaning you can now counter-jungle red without having to first smite the enemy's Raptors) and Raptors got a new bonus?

INTER5TELLAR2 votes

Or maybe the jungler/person who smites the crab leaves a trail of vision lasting 5 seconds per section? A 60 second buff? idk.

What if smiting the crab gave you a short but strong MS boost? That would enable you to smite-steal the crab and get out alive, or to wait on smiting the crab until the enemy comes to check out baron, then smite it for a fast engage.

AbodyHUN6661 votes

I guess most times when you would smite steal it the dragon or baron is already contested by the enemy.

I love this. Should have read yours before posting the same suggestion :3

I like it, but that takes away even further from poachers, which is already a really lackluster item.

poachers works on one scuttler for each team, I believe its top for red and bot for blue

Zushakon1 votes

I really like the brief MS boost idea. As far as poachers go, I think they should rework it to be more in line with the other options.

This actually makes sense since it doesn't encourage wasting your smite before taking dragon/baron; in fact it rewards planning ahead. Pretty good idea.

It already has a smite bonus.

You know.

The bonus where you don't waste 30 seconds chasing it around.

I'm not even kidding when I say this: I have started doing this on Udyr: frog -> blue buff -> smite crab -> wolves -> raptors -> smite crab

I will sometimes not smite the 2nd crab if it feels safe, since I have bearstun at that point. =\

Same :) Early game, before I get some damage, I sometimes end up doing laps up and down the river trying to kill the damn thing.

Overall I really like the new jungle changes. Jungling feels much less formulaic in its current iteration. I just wish the early clear wasn't quite so brutal. (now if Kha'Zix could get a little sustain buff so I could jungle him without feeling gimped, that would be great)

MrSexyHobo4 votes

Crab already gives the largest bonus of all the buffs. imo if they would have made that speed boost and vision the smite bonus when it came out no one would have blinked an eye and it would still have been considered the best camp mid game to get. imo its the best buff at all points of the game exept maybe wraiths.

JØJł2 votes

Yeah I always question myself... save the extra few seconds and smite it and waste my smite.... or take the few extra seconds hoping I dont run into a whole team or hoping my team doesnt go ham on the other team without me. A few seconds is long enough ;__;

EnvyDragon2 votes

I think a smite bonus would be good, but not THIS smite bonus.

Why?

Jungler doing wraiths, ADC and Support wandering through river

ADC: "Oh hey, let's kill the crab while we're here!" begins attacking crab Jungler: "Hold on I've got smite for it" ADC ignores Jungler: "Dude stop wait for me" ADC kills crab alone Jungler: "DUDE WTF, YOU LITERALLY SHORTENED OUR CRAB BUFF FOR NO GODDAMN REASON" ADC: "wow relax dude"

85 seconds later, the enemy jungler walks through an unwarded river, directly where the speed shrine would be, and gets a double kill on bot lane ADC: "/all gg our jungler is noob"

TL;DR it would basically punish you for killing crab without smite.

As opposed to adcs taking the gold and denying their team of the 30g jungler gets from it now? Toxic adcs will be toxic.

EnvyDragon1 votes

Wait wait wait, hold on. You think taking thirty gold is toxic? Especially when there's only one jungler, and killing the crab gives a vision and speed shrine for the entire team?

My point was that if you snag the shrine, you'll want it to last as long as possible, and punishing a team (by only giving a portion of the potential duration) for taking a role-neutral objective without the jungler is ridiculous. Everyone benefits from having speed shrines, just like everyone benefits from dragon and baron - neither of THOSE give smite buffs, and the only reason you specifically want the jungler around for them is for security against stealing.

GundayMonday2 votes

What if you get X amount of time of increased movement speed when you smite it? That way you don't waste your smite bonus (since you have to kill the crab for the increased duration in your proposed bonus), and you could use it to speed towards a lane for a gank, or escape from an ambush.

Smiting Crab should give Strength of the River buff, which allows the champion to carry the fountain turret on their back for 120 hours.

I would move the vision effect from Raptors to Scuttle Crab. Then give Raptors an MS or temp Tenacity bonus.

Or give Scuttle Crab a bonus MR/Armor % bonus. ie: +5% to bonus Armor and MR. It is a giant crab after all. And a pretty tanky one at that.

The Swede1 votes

I personally like it how it is, but people are entitled to their own opinions. It's pretty small and meant to be relatively insignificant, so I don't think it needs many changes as of right now, but I like your creative thinking.

MPendragon2 votes

Disagree no offense, it's an additional neutral camp on both sides of the river that already grant vision after slaying it.

Samflash32 votes

Rather, killing the crab with smite grants you bonus movement speed for X seconds.

For dem smite jungle steals lel.

This is a good idea which means Riot wont implement it and instead nerf Sona some more.

you might have failed to notice but unless i'm mistaken in the 5.3 pre patch notes Sona's movespeed was buffed and some of damage ratios were tweaked to be weaker early game and stonger late. but hey.

If they add another smite buff, I'd recommend something that creates a zone of control somewhere. Having the speed shrine turn into a slight dot for enemies would be more interesting because then it turns those areas into places that you can zone your opponents away from.

maybe when smiting on top of getting the speed shrine like normal the enemies get a snare shrine? waters become more difficult to tread for #reasons and enemies are slowed while in the area. nothing big, like 10% maybe.

smiting crab grants passive % MS boost for 90 seconds. there. Now its not pointless to smite. (as if I've ever smited it before)

iamthegoatofwar1 votes

A move speed buff for just smiting...I think yes.

Skia Asteri1 votes

Just going to mention that depending on which side of an invisible line through the map the crab is on, it counts as being a creep from the enemy jungle for item 3711 .

This needs to happen.

Smiting the Rift scuttled should result in an instant pentaBraum

Darkwind1 votes

That's pretty OP. How about 90 seconds instead of 105.

NorthernDruid1 votes

I'd rather up the vision shrine duration to 120 seconds anyway and add a smite bonus that grants you 15-20 flat movement speed.

Unless they go as far as making it more killable throughout the entire game.

Giving it raptors buff and giving raptors a defensive buff sounds cool too.
